“Then the (A)king of the South will grow strong, [a]along with one of his princes [b]who will grow strong over him and [c]obtain dominion; indeed, his [d]domain will be a great [e]dominion. And [f]after some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the (B)king of the North to carry out [g]an equitable arrangement. But she will not retain her [h]position of power, nor will he continue to stand with his [i]power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who fathered her as well as he who strengthened her in those times. But one of the [j]descendants of her line will stand in his place, and he will come against their military force and enter the (C)fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and display strength. And also their (D)gods with their [k]metal images and their desirable vessels of silver and gold he will bring into captivity to Egypt, and he on his part will stand back from attacking the king of the North for some years. Then [l]the latter will enter the kingdom of the king of the South, but will return to his own land.

10 “And his sons will wage war. So they will gather a multitude of great forces; and one of them will keep on coming and (E)overflow and pass through, that he may [m]again wage war up to his very fortress. 11 And the (F)king of the South will be enraged and go forth and fight [n]with the king of the North. Then the latter will cause a great multitude to stand, but that multitude will be given into [o]the hand of the former. 12 Then the multitude will be carried away, his heart will be lifted up, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail. 13 And the king of the North will again cause a much greater multitude than the former to stand, and at the (G)end of the times of those years, he will keep on coming with a great military force and much equipment.

14 “Now in those times many will stand against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to cause the vision to stand, but they will [p]fall down. 15 Then the king of the North will come, cast up a (H)siege ramp, and capture a well-fortified city; and the might of the South will not stand, not even [q]their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. 16 But he who comes against him will (I)do as he pleases, and (J)no one will be able to stand in [r]opposition to him; he will also stand for a time in the [s](K)Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand. 17 And he will (L)set his face to come with the authority of his whole kingdom, [t]bringing with him [u]an equitable proposal which he will [v]put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to destroy it. But she will not take a stand for him or be [w]on his side. 18 Then he will turn his face to the (M)coastlands and capture many. But a ruler will make his reproach against him cease; moreover, he will (N)repay him for his reproach. 19 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will (O)stumble and fall and be (P)found no more.

South and north

“Then the southern king will gain power, but one of his princes will overpower him, ruling in his place. His empire will be vast. After some years, they will make an agreement together. The southern king’s daughter will go to the northern king to finalize the agreement, but she won’t retain her great power. Neither will his power remain in place. In those times she will be handed over, along with her escort, the one who fathered her, and the one who strengthened her.[a]

“A branch from her roots will rise up in his place. Attacking the army, he will enter the walled fortress of the northern king. He will fight with them, and he will conquer. He will even carry off their gods to Egypt, along with their statues and their silver and gold equipment. For years he will avoid the northern king. Then the northern king will attack the kingdom of the southern king, but will return to his own land. 10 His sons will get ready for war, gathering massive forces. Their attack will be like an overwhelming flood. And they will attack again, taking the battle as far as his walled fortress.

11 “The southern king, in a bitter rage, will come out to battle the northern king. He will muster a huge army, but the army will be handed over to his enemy. 12 When the army is carried off, he will become confident. He will kill tens of thousands, but he will not stand strong. 13 The northern king will then muster another army—this one bigger than the first. After some years have passed, he will attack with a large and well-equipped army. 14 In those times, many will oppose the southern king. Violent persons from among your people also will rise up to support the vision, but they will fail.

15 “When the northern king attacks, he will throw up a siege ramp and occupy a walled city. The southern forces will not be able to resist—not even its elite forces. No one will be strong enough to resist. 16 The one who comes to attack will do whatever he wants; no one will be able to oppose him. He will take his place in the beautiful country, and he will hand out destruction. 17 He will decide to occupy his entire kingdom by force. He will make an agreement with him and will give him a wife, intending to destroy him,[b] but it won’t succeed and it won’t happen.[c] 18 He will turn his face to the coastlands, capturing many people. A commander will put an end to his disgrace,[d] even though he won’t repay that disgrace. 19 Then he will turn his attention to the walled fortresses of his own country but will stumble, fall, and disappear.
