I heard but could not understand, so I said, “My lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are to remain secret and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked shall continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand.(A) 11 From the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the desolating sacrilege is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred ninety days.(B) 12 Happy are those who persevere and attain the thousand three hundred thirty-five days.(C) 13 But you, go your way,[a] and rest; you shall rise for your reward at the end of the days.”(D)

The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri, in the days of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah and in the days of King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel.

The Family of Hosea

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and have children of prostitution, for the land commits great prostitution by forsaking the Lord.”(E) So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

And the Lord said to him, “Name him Jezreel,[b] for in a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.(F) On that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”(G)

She conceived again and bore a daughter. Then the Lord said to him, “Name her Lo-ruhamah,[c] for I will no longer have pity on the house of Israel or forgive them.(H) But I will have pity on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God; I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”(I)

When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said, “Name him Lo-ammi,[d] for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”[e]

The Restoration of Israel

10 [f]Yet the number of the people of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which can be neither measured nor numbered, and in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.”(J) 11 The people of Judah and the people of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head, and they shall rise up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.(K)

[g]Say to your brothers, “Ammi,”[h] and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.”[i]

Israel’s Infidelity, Punishment, and Redemption

Plead with your mother, plead—
for she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband—
that she put away her prostitution from her face
and her adultery from between her breasts,(L)
or I will strip her naked
and expose her as in the day she was born
and make her like a wilderness
and turn her into a parched land
    and kill her with thirst.(M)
Upon her children also I will have no pity,
because they are children of prostitution.(N)
For their mother has prostituted herself;
she who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, “I will go after my lovers;
they give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.”(O)
Therefore I will hedge up her[j] way with thorns,
and I will build a wall against her
so that she cannot find her paths.(P)
She shall pursue her lovers
    but not overtake them,
and she shall seek them
    but shall not find them.
Then she shall say, “I will go
and return to my first husband,
for it was better with me then than now.”(Q)
She did not know
that it was I who gave her
the grain, the wine, and the oil
and who lavished upon her silver
and gold that they used for Baal.(R)
Therefore I will take back
    my grain in its time
and my wine in its season,
and I will take away my wool and my flax,
which were to cover her nakedness.
10 Now I will uncover her shame
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.(S)
11 I will put an end to all her mirth,
her festivals, her new moons, her Sabbaths,
    and all her appointed festivals.(T)
12 I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
    of which she said,
“These are my pay,
which my lovers have given me.”
I will make them a forest,
and the wild animals shall devour them.(U)
13 I will punish her for the festival days of the Baals,
    to whom she offered incense
and decked herself with her rings and jewelry
    and went after her lovers
and forgot me, says the Lord.(V)

14 Therefore, I will now allure her
and bring her into the wilderness
    and speak tenderly to her.(W)
15 From there I will give her her vineyards
and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.
There she shall respond as in the days of her youth,
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.(X)

Hosea’s Wife and Children

When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, marry a promiscuous(V) woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness(W) to the Lord.” So he married Gomer(X) daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

Then the Lord said to Hosea, “Call him Jezreel,(Y) because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.(Z)

Gomer(AA) conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea, “Call her Lo-Ruhamah (which means “not loved”),(AB) for I will no longer show love to Israel,(AC) that I should at all forgive them. Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow,(AD) sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God,(AE) will save them.”

After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah,(AF) Gomer had another son. Then the Lord said, “Call him Lo-Ammi (which means “not my people”), for you are not my people, and I am not your God.[b](AG)

10 “Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted.(AH) In the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘children of the living God.’(AI) 11 The people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together;(AJ) they will appoint one leader(AK) and will come up out of the land,(AL) for great will be the day of Jezreel.[c](AM)

Israel Punished and Restored

“Rebuke your mother,(AO) rebuke her,
for she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband.
Let her remove the adulterous(AP) look from her face
and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Otherwise I will strip(AQ) her naked
and make her as bare as on the day she was born;(AR)
I will make her like a desert,(AS)
turn her into a parched land,
    and slay her with thirst.
I will not show my love to her children,(AT)
because they are the children of adultery.(AU)
Their mother has been unfaithful
and has conceived them in disgrace.
She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,(AV)
who give me my food and my water,
my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’(AW)
Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes;
I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way.(AX)
She will chase after her lovers but not catch them;
she will look for them but not find them.(AY)
Then she will say,
‘I will go back to my husband(AZ) as at first,(BA)
for then I was better off(BB) than now.’
She has not acknowledged(BC) that I was the one
who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,(BD)
who lavished on her the silver and gold(BE)
    which they used for Baal.(BF)

“Therefore I will take away my grain(BG) when it ripens,
and my new wine(BH) when it is ready.
I will take back my wool and my linen,
intended to cover her naked body.
10 So now I will expose(BI) her lewdness
before the eyes of her lovers;(BJ)
no one will take her out of my hands.(BK)
11 I will stop(BL) all her celebrations:(BM)
her yearly festivals, her New Moons,
her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.(BN)
12 I will ruin her vines(BO) and her fig trees,(BP)
which she said were her pay from her lovers;(BQ)
I will make them a thicket,(BR)
and wild animals will devour them.(BS)
13 I will punish her for the days
she burned incense(BT) to the Baals;(BU)
she decked herself with rings and jewelry,(BV)
