Daniël bidt voor zijn volk

9 Darius, de zoon van koning Ahasveros uit Medië,[a] werd koning van de Babyloniërs gemaakt. 2 Toen hij nog maar pas koning was, begreep ik op een dag uit de Boeken dat de Heer tegen de profeet Jeremia gezegd had, dat Jeruzalem 70 jaar lang in puin zou liggen.[b] En ik zag dat die 70 jaren nu bijna voorbij waren. 3 Ik begon daarover tot de Heer te bidden en te smeken. Ik at niet en droeg rouwkleren. 4 Ik bad tot mijn Heer God en ik vertelde Hem over de schuld van mijn volk. Ik zei: "Heer, grote en machtige God, U bent trouw aan uw verbond. U bent goed voor de mensen die van U houden en die leven zoals U het wil. 5 Ik geef toe dat wij veel verkeerde dingen hebben gedaan. We hebben niet geleefd zoals U het wil. We zijn U ongehoorzaam geweest. We hebben ons niet aan uw wetten en leefregels willen houden. 6 We hebben niet willen luisteren naar wat uw profeten hebben gezegd tegen ons, onze koningen, onze leiders, onze ouders en ons hele volk. 7 U bent eerlijk en rechtvaardig, Heer. Maar wij zouden ons over onszelf moeten schamen: alle mannen van Juda, de bewoners van Jeruzalem, het hele volk van Israël, alle Israëlieten die dichtbij of ver weg wonen in de landen waar U hen naartoe heeft gejaagd omdat ze ontrouw aan U waren. 8 Heer, wij, onze koningen, onze leiders en onze ouders kunnen ons alleen maar over onszelf schamen. Want we hebben verkeerd tegen U gedaan. 9 Maar U, onze Heer God, bent goed en vergevend, ook al zijn we U ongehoorzaam geweest. 10 We hebben niet geleefd volgens de wetten en leefregels die U ons door uw profeten heeft gegeven. 11 Heel Israël is ongehoorzaam aan U geweest en heeft niet naar U willen luisteren. Daarom heeft U de vervloeking over ons laten komen die staat opgeschreven in de wet van uw dienaar Mozes.[c] Alles wat U daarin gezworen heeft, is met ons gebeurd. 12 U heeft met ons en onze leiders gedaan wat U heeft gezegd. Zo is deze grote ramp over Jeruzalem gekomen. Geen enkel ander volk is ooit door zó'n grote ramp getroffen. 13 Alle rampen die in de wet van Mozes staan, zijn ons overkomen. We hebben niet geprobeerd uw straf te voorkómen door te stoppen met de slechte dingen die we deden. We zijn niet gaan leven zoals U het wil. 14 Daarom heeft U ons gestraft met deze rampen. U bent eerlijk en rechtvaardig in alles wat U doet, ook toen U ons strafte. Want we wilden U niet gehoorzamen.

15 Onze Heer God, U heeft ons vroeger op een machtige manier uit Egypte bevrijd. U heeft er toen voor gezorgd dat U overal beroemd werd. Iedereen heeft van U gehoord. Toch zijn wij U ongehoorzaam geweest. We hebben vreselijke dingen gedaan. 16 Maar, Heer, wilt U nu voor ons opkomen en niet langer boos op ons zijn. Heer, straf Jeruzalem en uw heilige berg alstublieft niet langer. Want omdat wij en onze ouders U ongehoorzaam zijn geweest, worden wij en Jeruzalem nu door iedereen uitgelachen en bespot. 17 Heer onze God, luister alstublieft naar mijn gebed! Wilt U alstublieft weer goed zijn voor uw verwoeste tempel. Niet omdat wij dat verdienen, maar vanwege uw eer. 18 Wilt U alstublieft naar mij luisteren! Kijk toch hoe de stad waar U wilde wonen helemaal verwoest is! Ik smeek U dit niet omdat wij verdienen dat U weer goed voor ons bent! Maar ik smeek U dit omdat ik weet hoe goed en liefdevol U bent. 19 Heer, luister alstublieft! Heer, vergeef ons! Heer, zie eens hoe vreselijk we er aan toe zijn! Doe alstublieft iets, mijn God, vanwege uw eer! Wacht niet langer, want wij zijn uw stad en uw volk."

20 Zo bad ik tot de Heer en gaf toe dat mijn volk Hem ongehoorzaam was geweest. Ik bad voor de heilige berg van mijn God.

Gods antwoord aan Daniël

21 Toen ik zo aan het bidden was, kwam de man Gabriël, die ik al eerder had gezien, snel naar mij toe vliegen. Hij kwam op het tijdstip dat in de tempel het avondoffer gebracht hoort te worden. 22 Hij zei: "Daniël, ik ben nu gekomen om je een aantal dingen uit te leggen. 23 Toen jij begon te bidden, kreeg ik bevel onmiddellijk te vertrekken om je het antwoord te vertellen, want de Heer houdt heel veel van jou. Let dus goed op wat ik zeg en op wat je ziet.

24 God heeft jouw volk en Jeruzalem een tijd van 70 weken gegeven.[d] Dan zal er een eind gemaakt worden aan hun ongehoorzaamheid. En hun schuld zal weggedaan worden. Ze zullen dan voor altijd kunnen leven zoals God het wil. De boodschap van de profeet zal dan verborgen worden. En de allerheiligste zal gezalfd worden. 25 Onthoud: vanaf het moment dat het bevel wordt gegeven om terug te gaan en Jeruzalem te herbouwen, tot de komst van hem die gezalfd is, duurt het zeven weken en 62 weken.[e] En Jeruzalem zal herbouwd worden, met straten en een walgracht,[f] maar zal door moeilijke tijden gaan. 26 En na die 62 weken zal de man die is gezalfd, worden vermoord, zonder dat hij ergens schuldig aan is. En er zal een volk komen van een koning die de stad en het heiligdom zal verwoesten. Hun einde zal zijn als bij de grote overstroming.[g] En tot het eind van de tijd toe zal er strijd zijn, een verwoestende oorlog. Dat staat vast. 27 Hij zal één week lang[h] een sterk verbond sluiten met velen. Halverwege die week zal hij verbieden dat er nog langer aan God geofferd wordt. En op het dak van de tempel zal iets afschuwelijks zijn, dat verwoesting veroorzaakt. Maar aan het einde zal hij ook zelf verwoest worden."

  4. Daniël 9:24 Eigenlijk staat hier: '70 zevens'. De meeste vertalingen vertalen 'zevens' met 'weken' of 'jaarweken'. Een 'week' zou dan dus bestaan uit zeven jaar in plaats van uit zeven dagen. Dan zou het hier dus over 490 jaar gaan. Er zijn ook andere theorieën, maar het gaat te ver om die hier verder uit te leggen. Maar in ieder geval is dit stukje moeilijk te begrijpen. Een deel ervan gaat over dingen die al gebeurd zijn. Maar een ander deel gaat over dingen die nog moeten gaan gebeuren. Zij gaan over het eind van de tijd.
  5. Daniël 9:25 Als met 'weken' (lees de aantekening bij vers 24 hierboven) een periode van zeven jaar bedoeld wordt, zouden zeven weken 49 jaar zijn. 62 weken worden dan 434 jaar.
  6. Daniël 9:25 Een walgracht is een geul in de rotsgrond, als fundament voor de muur.
  7. Daniël 9:26 In het jaar 70 werd Jeruzalem door de Romeinen verwoest. Het was een totale verwoesting en er waren meer dan een miljoen doden. Vandaar dat de verwoesting wordt vergeleken met 'de grote overstroming', namelijk de grote overstroming uit de tijd van Noach waardoor alles werd verwoest.

9 En el año primero de Darío(A), hijo de Asuero, descendiente[a] de los medos, que fue constituido rey sobre el reino de los caldeos, 2 en el año primero de su reinado, yo, Daniel, pude entender en los libros el número de los años en que, por palabra del Señor que fue revelada al profeta Jeremías, debían cumplirse las desolaciones de Jerusalén: setenta años(B).

3 Volví[b] mi rostro a Dios el Señor para buscarlo en oración y súplicas, en ayuno, cilicio y ceniza. 4 Oré al Señor mi Dios e hice confesión y dije: «Ay, Señor, el Dios grande y temible, que guarda el pacto y la misericordia(C) para los que lo aman y guardan Sus mandamientos(D), 5 hemos pecado, hemos cometido iniquidad, hemos hecho lo malo(E), nos hemos rebelado(F) y nos hemos apartado de Tus mandamientos(G) y de Tus ordenanzas. 6 No hemos escuchado a Tus siervos los profetas(H) que hablaron en Tu nombre a nuestros reyes, a nuestros príncipes, a nuestros padres y a todo el pueblo de la tierra.

7 Tuya es la justicia, oh Señor, y nuestra la vergüenza en el rostro, como sucede hoy a los hombres de Judá, a los habitantes de Jerusalén y a todo Israel(I), a los que están cerca y a los que están lejos en todos los países adonde los has echado(J), a causa de las infidelidades que cometieron contra Ti(K).

8 »Oh Señor, nuestra es la vergüenza del rostro, y de nuestros reyes, de nuestros príncipes y de nuestros padres, porque hemos pecado contra Ti. 9 Al Señor nuestro Dios pertenece la compasión y el perdón(L), porque[c] nos hemos rebelado contra Él(M), 10 y no hemos obedecido la voz del Señor nuestro Dios para andar en Sus enseñanzas[d], que Él puso delante de nosotros por medio[e] de Sus siervos los profetas(N). 11 Ciertamente todo Israel ha transgredido Tu ley y se ha apartado, sin querer obedecer Tu voz(O). Por eso ha sido derramada sobre nosotros la maldición y el juramento que está escrito en la ley(P) de Moisés, siervo de Dios, porque hemos pecado contra Él.

12 »Y Él ha confirmado las palabras que habló contra nosotros y contra nuestros jefes que nos gobernaron[f], trayendo sobre nosotros gran calamidad(Q), pues nunca se ha hecho debajo del[g] cielo nada como lo que se ha hecho contra Jerusalén(R). 13 Como está escrito en la ley de Moisés, toda esta calamidad ha venido sobre nosotros(S), pero no hemos buscado el favor[h] del Señor nuestro Dios, apartándonos de nuestra iniquidad y prestando atención a[i] Tu verdad(T).

14 »Por tanto, el Señor ha estado guardando esta[j] calamidad(U) y la ha traído sobre nosotros. Porque el Señor nuestro Dios es justo en todas las obras que ha hecho, pero nosotros no hemos obedecido Su voz(V). 15 Y ahora, Señor Dios nuestro, que sacaste a Tu pueblo de la tierra de Egipto con mano poderosa(W), y te has hecho un nombre, como hoy se ve(X), hemos pecado, hemos sido malos. 16 Oh Señor, conforme a todos Tus actos de justicia[k], apártese ahora Tu ira y Tu furor de Tu ciudad, Jerusalén(Y), Tu santo monte(Z). Porque a causa de nuestros pecados y de las iniquidades de nuestros padres, Jerusalén y Tu pueblo son el oprobio de todos los que nos rodean(AA).

17 »Y ahora, Dios nuestro, escucha la oración de Tu siervo y sus súplicas, y haz resplandecer Tu rostro(AB) sobre Tu santuario desolado(AC), por amor de Ti mismo, oh Señor[l]. 18 Inclina Tu oído, Dios mío, y escucha. Abre Tus ojos y mira(AD) nuestras desolaciones y la ciudad sobre la cual se invoca Tu nombre(AE). Pues no es por nuestros propios méritos[m] que presentamos[n] nuestras súplicas(AF) delante de Ti, sino por Tu gran compasión. 19 ¡Oh Señor, escucha! ¡Señor, perdona! ¡Señor, atiende y actúa! ¡No tardes, por amor de Ti mismo, Dios mío(AG)! Porque Tu nombre se invoca sobre Tu ciudad y sobre Tu pueblo».

La profecía de las setenta semanas

20 Aún estaba yo hablando, orando y confesando mi pecado y el pecado de mi pueblo Israel(AH), y presentando[o] mi súplica delante del Señor(AI) mi Dios por el santo monte de mi Dios, 21 todavía estaba yo hablando en oración, cuando Gabriel, el hombre a quien había visto en la visión(AJ) al principio, se me acercó, estando yo muy cansado[p], como a la hora de la ofrenda de la tarde(AK).

22 Me instruyó y me dijo(AL): «Daniel, he salido ahora para darte sabiduría y entendimiento. 23 Al principio de tus súplicas se dio la orden[q], y he venido para explicártela(AM), porque eres muy estimado[r]. Pon atención a la orden y entiende la visión(AN).

24 Setenta semanas[s] han sido decretadas sobre tu pueblo y sobre tu santa ciudad, para poner fin a[t] la transgresión, para terminar con el pecado[u], para expiar la iniquidad(AO), para traer justicia eterna(AP), para sellar la visión y la profecía[v], y para ungir el lugar santísimo[w].

25 »Has de saber y entender que desde la salida de la orden para restaurar y reconstruir a Jerusalén(AQ) hasta el Mesías(AR) Príncipe[x](AS), habrá siete semanas y sesenta y dos semanas. Volverá a ser edificada, con plaza[y] y foso, pero en tiempos de angustia. 26 Después de las sesenta y dos semanas el Mesías[z] será muerto[aa] y no tendrá nada[ab](AT), y el pueblo del príncipe que ha de venir destruirá la ciudad(AU) y el santuario. Su fin vendrá con inundación(AV). Aun hasta el fin habrá guerra; las desolaciones están determinadas[ac]. 27 Y él hará un pacto firme con muchos por una semana, pero a la mitad de la semana pondrá fin al sacrificio y a la ofrenda de cereal. Sobre el ala de abominaciones[ad] vendrá el desolador[ae], hasta que una destrucción completa, la que está decretada, sea derramada sobre el desolador[af](AW)».

Daniel’s Prayer

9 In the first year of Darius,(A) the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was made king over the Chaldean kingdom— 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy.(B) 3 So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.(C)

4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:

Ah, Lord—the great and awe-inspiring God(D) who keeps his gracious covenant(E) with those who love him(F) and keep his commands(G)— 5 we have sinned,(H) done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled,(I) and turned away from your commands and ordinances.(J) 6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets,(K) who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the people of the land.

7 Lord, righteousness belongs to you,(L) but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel—those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward you. 8 Lord, public shame(M) belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors, because we have sinned against you.(N) 9 Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him 10 and have not obeyed the Lord our God by following his instructions that he set before us through his servants(O) the prophets.

11 All Israel has broken your law and turned away,(P) refusing to obey you. The promised curse[a] written in the law of Moses,(Q) the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against him. 12 He has carried out his words(R) that he spoke against us and against our rulers[b](S) by bringing on us a disaster that is so great that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done(T) under all of heaven. 13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses,(U) all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of(V) the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth.(W) 14 So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all he has done. But we have not obeyed him.

15 Now, Lord our God—who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand(X) and made your name renowned(Y) as it is this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath(Z) turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain;(AA) for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.

17 Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of your servant. Make your face shine(AB) on your desolate sanctuary(AC) for the Lord’s sake. 18 Listen closely,[c] my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city that bears your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay,(AD) because your city and your people bear your name.

The Seventy Weeks of Years

20 While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,(AE) and presenting my petition before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God— 21 while I was praying, Gabriel,(AF) the man I had seen in the first vision,(AG) reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.(AH) 22 He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding.(AI) 23 At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[d](AJ) So consider the message and understand the vision:(AK)

24 Seventy weeks are decreed(AL)
about your people and your holy city—
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to atone for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,(AM)
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25 Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem(AN)
until an Anointed One,(AO) the ruler,[e]
will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.
It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26 After those sixty-two weeks
the Anointed One will be cut off(AP)
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming ruler
will destroy the city(AQ) and the sanctuary.[f]
The[g] end will come with a flood,(AR)
and until the end there will be[h] war;
desolations are decreed.
27 He will make a firm covenant[i]
with many for one week,
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation(AS)
will be on a wing(AT) of the temple[j][k]
until the decreed destruction(AU)
is poured out on the desolator.”

Daniel’s Prayer

9 In the first year of Darius(A) son of Xerxes[a](B) (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian[b] kingdom— 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy(C) years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting,(D) and in sackcloth and ashes.(E)

4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:(F)

“Lord, the great and awesome God,(G) who keeps his covenant of love(H) with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned(I) and done wrong.(J) We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away(K) from your commands and laws.(L) 6 We have not listened(M) to your servants the prophets,(N) who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors,(O) and to all the people of the land.

7 “Lord, you are righteous,(P) but this day we are covered with shame(Q)—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered(R) us because of our unfaithfulness(S) to you.(T) 8 We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.(U) 9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving,(V) even though we have rebelled against him;(W) 10 we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.(X) 11 All Israel has transgressed(Y) your law(Z) and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“Therefore the curses(AA) and sworn judgments(AB) written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned(AC) against you. 12 You have fulfilled(AD) the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster.(AE) Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like(AF) what has been done to Jerusalem.(AG) 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord(AH) our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.(AI) 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster(AJ) on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does;(AK) yet we have not obeyed him.(AL)

15 “Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand(AM) and who made for yourself a name(AN) that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts,(AO) turn away(AP) your anger and your wrath(AQ) from Jerusalem,(AR) your city, your holy hill.(AS) Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn(AT) to all those around us.

17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor(AU) on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear,(AV) our God, and hear;(AW) open your eyes and see(AX) the desolation of the city that bears your Name.(AY) We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.(AZ) 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive!(BA) Lord, hear and act! For your sake,(BB) my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”

The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing(BC) my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill(BD)— 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel,(BE) the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.(BF) 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.(BG) 23 As soon as you began to pray,(BH) a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.(BI) Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:(BJ)

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city(BK) to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone(BL) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,(BM) to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild(BN) Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f](BO) the ruler,(BP) comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.(BQ) 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death(BR) and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood:(BS) War will continue until the end, and desolations(BT) have been decreed.(BU) 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[h] In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[j] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed(BV) is poured out on him.[k]”[l]
