De nachtmerrie van Nebukadnezar
2 In zijn tweede regeringsjaar kreeg Nebukadnezar een vreselijke nachtmerrie. Hevig verontrust werd hij wakker en kon de slaap niet meer vatten. 2 Hij ontbood meteen alle geleerden, bezweerders, tovenaars en astrologen. Zij moesten hem zijn droom verklaren. 3 Toen zij allemaal voor hem stonden, zei hij: ‘Ik heb een vreselijke nachtmerrie gehad. Dat maakt mij erg ongerust en daarom wil ik weten wat dat te betekenen heeft.’ 4 Toen antwoordden de astrologen hem: ‘Majesteit, vertel ons uw droom, dan zullen wij u de betekenis ervan uitleggen.’ 5 De koning zei echter: ‘Ik heb besloten dat u mij zowel de droom als zijn uitlegging moet vertellen! Als u dat niet kunt, zal ik u in stukken laten hakken en uw huizen met de grond gelijk laten maken. 6 U krijgt echter prachtige geschenken en ik zal u met eerbewijzen overladen, als u mij zegt hoe mijn droom was en mij zijn betekenis vertelt. Vooruit, steek van wal!’ 7 Maar zij herhaalden: ‘Hoe kunnen wij vertellen wat de betekenis van uw droom is, als u ons niet eerst uw droom vertelt?’ 8,9 De koning barstte uit: ‘Ik heb u wel door! U probeert tijd te winnen. U ziet dat ik vastbesloten ben u terecht te stellen, als u mij de droom niet kunt vertellen. En u hebt afgesproken mij iets op de mouw te spelden in de hoop dat ik de hele zaak na verloop van tijd vergeet! Maar als u mij mijn droom niet kunt vertellen, weet ik zeker dat u die ook niet kunt uitleggen.’ 10 De astrologen antwoordden hun vorst: ‘Geen mens ter wereld kan antwoord geven op de vraag die u stelt! Daarom heeft nog nooit een koning, hoe groot of machtig ook, zoiets aan een geleerde, tovenaar of astroloog gevraagd. 11 U wilt het onmogelijke. Niemand kan u uw droom vertellen, behalve de goden, maar die wonen niet onder de stervelingen.’
12 Toen de koning dit hoorde, werd hij razend en beval alle wijze mannen uit Babel terecht te stellen. 13 Overal werden wijzen opgepakt. Ook Daniël en zijn metgezellen liepen gevaar gearresteerd en gedood te worden. 14,15 Daniël bleef echter kalm en ging verstandig en met overleg te werk. Hij vroeg Arjoch, het hoofd van de koninklijke lijfwacht, die al voorbereidingen trof voor de executies: ‘Waarom is de koning zo kwaad? Wat is er toch aan de hand?’ Arjoch vertelde hem wat er was gebeurd. 16 Daniël ging naar de koning. ‘Geef mij alstublieft wat tijd,’ zei hij, ‘dan zal ik u uw droom uitleggen.’ 17 Daarop ging hij naar huis en vertelde zijn vrienden Hananja, Misaël en Azarja 18 dat zij de God van de hemel moesten smeken medelijden met hen te tonen door hun het geheim van de droom te vertellen. Dan zouden zij en de andere wijzen van Babel niet hoeven te sterven. 19 Die nacht vertelde God aan Daniël het geheim. 20 En Daniël loofde de God van de hemel en zei: ‘Geprezen zij God van eeuwigheid tot eeuwigheid! Want Hij bezit alle wijsheid en kracht. 21 Alle wereldgebeurtenissen liggen in zijn hand. Hij zet koningen af en stelt nieuwe koningen aan. Hij geeft de wijzen hun wijsheid en de geleerden hun inzicht. 22 Hij maakt ondoorgrondelijke en geheime dingen bekend. Hij ziet alle in het duister verborgen zaken, want Hij Zelf is het licht. 23 O God van mijn voorouders, U loof en prijs ik. Want U hebt mij wijsheid en kracht geschonken en op ons verzoek hebt U mij nu de droom van de koning en de uitleg daarvan bekendgemaakt.’
24 Daarna ging Daniël naar Arjoch, die van de koning de opdracht had gekregen de wijzen van Babel ter dood te brengen. Daniël zei: ‘Stel de wijzen niet terecht. Breng mij bij de koning, dan zal ik hem de uitleg van zijn droom geven.’
25 In allerijl bracht Arjoch hem naar de vorst en zei: ‘Majesteit, ik heb een krijgsgevangene uit Juda gevonden die u de uitleg kan geven!’ 26 De koning richtte zich tot Daniël (ook wel Beltsazar genoemd) en zei: ‘Is dat waar? Kunt u mij werkelijk vertellen wat ik heb gedroomd en wat dat betekent?’ 27 Daniël antwoordde: ‘Geen enkele wijze of bezweerder, geleerde of waarzegger kan u een dergelijk geheim vertellen. 28 Maar er is een God in de hemel die geheimen openbaart. Hij heeft u, koning Nebukadnezar, in uw droom bekendgemaakt wat in de toekomst zal gebeuren. Uw droom en de dingen die aan uw geestesoog voorbijtrokken, gingen als volgt. 29 Terwijl u op bed lag, dacht u na over toekomstige gebeurtenissen. Hij die geheimen openbaart, heeft u laten weten wat er te gebeuren staat. 30 Ik ben niet door bovenmenselijke wijsheid achter het geheim van uw droom gekomen, maar alleen omdat God het mij heeft laten zien. Ik moest u de uitleg van uw droom geven en u zo duidelijk maken wat u dwarszit. 31 Majesteit, u zag een reusachtig groot beeld van een mens. Er hing een oogverblindende glans omheen en het stond pal voor u. Het had een afschrikwekkend uiterlijk. 32 Het hoofd van het beeld was gemaakt van het zuiverste goud, zijn borst en armen waren van zilver, zijn buik en dijen waren van koper, 33 zijn benen van ijzer en zijn voeten waren van een mengsel van ijzer en klei. 34 Terwijl u bleef toekijken, raakte zonder toedoen van mensenhanden een steen los van de berghelling. Hij rolde op het beeld af en verpletterde de voeten van ijzer en klei. Hij sloeg ze helemaal aan stukken en verpletterde ook de rest van het beeld. 35 Zo bleef een grote berg ijzer, klei, koper, zilver en goud over. De vermorzelde delen waren zo fijn als het kaf op een dorsvloer in de zomer. De wind blies alles weg, er bleef geen spoor van over. Maar de steen die het beeld had omvergeworpen, groeide uit tot een grote berg die de hele aarde bedekte.
36 Dit was uw droom en nu zal ik u de betekenis ervan uitleggen: 37 majesteit, u bent koning over vele koningen. Dit koningschap, met alle daaraan verbonden gezag en eer, heeft de God van de hemel u gegeven. 38 Hij laat u regeren over de mensen tot in de verste hoeken van de aarde. Ook de wilde dieren en de vogels staan onder uw gezag. U bent dat gouden hoofd. 39 Maar nadat aan uw koninkrijk een einde is gekomen, zal een andere wereldmacht opstaan. Dit rijk zal kleiner zijn dan het uwe. Na de val van dat koninkrijk, zal een derde grote macht, het koper, verrijzen om de wereld te regeren. 40 Daarna komt er een vierde koninkrijk, zo hard als ijzer. Een rijk met een ijzeren kracht dat alles verwoest en verbrijzelt. 41,42 En ten slotte de voeten en tenen die u hebt gezien, gemaakt van een mengsel van ijzer en pottenbakkersklei. Zij verbeelden het daarop volgende rijk, dat echter intern verdeeld zal zijn. Er zal iets van de hardheid van ijzer in zijn, maar andere delen zullen net zo broos zijn als gebakken klei. 43 Dit mengsel van ijzer en klei betekent dat deze rijken proberen machtiger te worden door zich met behulp van huwelijken met elkaar te vermengen. Maar zij zullen niet echt een eenheid worden, want ijzer en klei verbinden zich niet met elkaar. 44 Tijdens de regeringen van die koningen zal de God van de hemel een koninkrijk oprichten dat nooit ten onder zal gaan. Niemand zal het ooit veroveren. Het zal die koninkrijken compleet verbrijzelen, maar zelf tot in eeuwigheid blijven bestaan. 45 Dit is dus de betekenis van de steen die zonder toedoen van mensenhanden losraakte van de berg. Deze steen verpulverde het ijzer, leem, koper, zilver en goud. Zo heeft de grote God u laten zien wat in de toekomst zal gebeuren. En deze uitlegging van uw droom is even waar en betrouwbaar als de droom zelf.’
46 Toen knielde koning Nebukadnezar voor Daniël en boog diep voor hem. Hij beval zijn onderdanen hem offers te brengen en wierook voor hem te branden. 47 ‘Werkelijk, Daniël,’ zei hij, ‘uw God is de God boven alle goden, de heerser over alle koningen. Hij openbaart geheimen en daardoor hebt u dit geheim kunnen bekendmaken.’ 48 Toen verleende hij Daniël hoge waardigheid. Hij gaf hem talloze kostbare geschenken en benoemde hem tot heerser over het hele gebied van Babel en maakte hem bovendien hoofd van alle wijze mannen uit Babel. 49 Op Daniëls verzoek stelde de koning Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego aan als zijn assistenten. Zij waren verantwoordelijk voor het bestuur van het gebied van Babel. Daniël bleef in functie aan het koninklijk hof.

2 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed hath Nebuchadnezzar dreams, and his spirit doth move itself, and his sleep hath been against him;
2 and the king saith to call for scribes, and for enchanters, and for sorcerers, and for Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams. And they come in and stand before the king;
3 and the king saith to them, `A dream I have dreamed, and moved is my spirit to know the dream.'
4 And the Chaldeans speak to the king [in] Aramaean, `O king, to the ages live, tell the dream to thy servants, and the interpretation we do shew.'
5 The king hath answered and said to the Chaldeans, `The thing from me is gone; if ye do not cause me to know the dream and its interpretation, pieces ye are made, and your houses are made dunghills;
6 and if the dream and its interpretation ye do shew, gifts, and fee, and great glory ye receive from before me, therefore the dream and its interpretation shew ye me.'
7 They have answered a second time, and are saying, `Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and the interpretation we do shew.
8 The king hath answered and said, `Of a truth I know that time ye are gaining, because that ye have seen that the thing is gone from me,
9 [so] that, if the dream ye do not cause me to know -- one is your sentence, seeing a word lying and corrupt ye have prepared to speak before me, till that the time is changed, therefore the dream tell ye to me, then do I know that its interpretation ye do shew me.'
10 The Chaldeans have answered before the king, and are saying, `There is not a man on the earth who is able to shew the king's matter; therefore, no king, chief, and ruler, hath asked such a thing as this of any scribe, and enchanter, and Chaldean;
11 and the thing that the king is asking [is] precious, and others are there not that do shew it before the king, save the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.'
12 Therefore the king hath been angry and very wroth, and hath said to destroy all the wise men of Babylon;
13 And the sentence hath gone forth, and the wise men are being slain, and they have sought Daniel and his companions to be slain.
14 Then Daniel hath replied [with] counsel and discretion to Arioch chief of the executioners of the king, who hath gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon.
15 He hath answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, `Wherefore [is] the sentence so urgent from before the king?' Then Arioch hath made the thing known to Daniel,
16 and Daniel hath gone up, and sought of the king that he would give him time to shew the interpretation to the king.
17 Then Daniel to his house hath gone, and to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, he hath made the thing known,
18 and to seek mercies from before the God of the heavens concerning this secret, that they destroy not Daniel and his companions with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Then to Daniel, in a vision of the night, the secret hath been revealed. Then hath Daniel blessed the God of the heavens.
20 Daniel hath answered and said, `Let the name of God be blessed from age even unto age, for wisdom and might -- for they are His.
21 And He is changing times and seasons, He is causing kings to pass away, and He is raising up kings; He is giving wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those possessing understanding.
22 He is revealing deep and hidden things; He hath known what [is] in darkness, and light with Him hath dwelt.
23 Thee, O God of my fathers, I am thanking and praising, for wisdom and might Thou hast given to me; and now, Thou hast caused me to know that which we have sought from Thee, for the king's matter Thou hast caused us to know.'
24 Therefore Daniel hath gone up unto Arioch, whom the king hath appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he hath gone, and thus hath said to him, `The wise men of Babylon thou dost not destroy, bring me up before the king, and the interpretation to the king I do shew.'
25 Then Arioch in haste hath brought up Daniel before the king, and thus hath said to him -- `I have found a man of the sons of the Removed of Judah, who the interpretation to the king doth make known.'
26 The king hath answered and said to Daniel, whose name [is] Belteshazzar, `Art thou able to cause me to know the dream that I have seen, and its interpretation?'
27 Daniel hath answered before the king and said, `The secret that the king is asking, the wise men, the enchanters, the scribes, the soothsayers, are not able to shew to the king;
28 but there is a God in the heavens, a revealer of secrets, and He hath made known to king Nebuchadnezzar that which [is] to be in the latter end of the days. `Thy dream and the visions of thy head on thy bed are these:
29 Thou, O king, thy thoughts on thy bed have come up [concerning] that which [is] to be after this, and the Revealer of secrets hath caused thee to know that which [is] to be.
30 As to me -- not for [any] wisdom that is in me above any living hath this secret been revealed to me; but for the intent that the interpretation to the king they make known, and the thoughts of thy heart thou dost know.
31 `Thou, O king, wast looking, and lo, a certain great image. This image [is] mighty, and its brightness excellent; it is standing over-against thee, and its appearance [is] terrible.
32 This image! its head [is] of good gold, its breasts and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass;
33 its legs of iron, its feet, part of them of iron, and part of them of clay.
34 Thou wast looking till that a stone hath been cut out without hands, and it hath smitten the image on its feet, that [are] of iron and of clay, and it hath broken them small;
35 then broken small together have been the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, and they have been as chaff from the summer threshing-floor, and carried them away hath the wind, and no place hath been found for them: and the stone that smote the image hath become a great mountain, and hath filled all the land.
36 This [is] the dream, and its interpretation we do tell before the king.
37 `Thou, O king, art a king of kings, for the God of the heavens a kingdom, strength, and might, and glory, hath given to thee;
38 and whithersoever sons of men are dwelling, the beast of the field, and the fowl of the heavens, He hath given into thy hand, and hath caused thee to rule over them all; thou [art] this head of gold.
39 And after thee doth rise up another kingdom lower than those, and another third kingdom of brass, that doth rule overall the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom is strong as iron, because that iron is breaking small, and making feeble, all [things], even as iron that is breaking all these, it beateth small and breaketh.
41 As to that which thou hast seen: the feet and toes, part of them potter's clay, and part of them iron, the kingdom is divided: and some of the standing of the iron [is] to be in it, because that thou hast seen the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 As to the toes of the feet, part of them iron, and part of them clay: some part of the kingdom is strong, and some part of it is brittle.
43 Because thou hast seen iron mixed with miry clay, they are mixing themselves with the seed of men: and they are not adhering one with another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 `And in the days of these kings raise up doth the God of the heavens a kingdom that is not destroyed -- to the age, and its kingdom to another people is not left: it beateth small and endeth all these kingdoms, and it standeth to the age.
45 Because that thou hast seen that out of the mountain cut hath been a stone without hands, and it hath beaten small the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king that which [is] to be after this; and the dream [is] true, and its interpretation stedfast.
46 Then hath king Nebuchadnezzar fallen on his face, and to Daniel he hath done obeisance, and present, and sweet things, he hath said to pour out to him.
47 The king hath answered Daniel and said, `Of a truth [it is] that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since thou hast been able to reveal this secret.'
48 Then the king hath made Daniel great, and many great gifts he hath given to him, and hath caused him to rule over all the province of Babylon, and chief of the perfects over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 And Daniel hath sought from the king, and he hath appointed over the work of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and Daniel [is] in the gate of the king.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
2 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams;(A) his mind was troubled(B) and he could not sleep.(C) 2 So the king summoned the magicians,(D) enchanters, sorcerers(E) and astrologers[a](F) to tell him what he had dreamed.(G) When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(H) me and I want to know what it means.[b]”
4 Then the astrologers answered the king,[c](I) “May the king live forever!(J) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(K) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(L) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(M) 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(N) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”
7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(O) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(P)
10 The astrologers(Q) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(R) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(S) and they do not live among humans.”
12 This made the king so angry and furious(T) that he ordered the execution(U) of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.(V)
14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(W) 18 He urged them to plead for mercy(X) from the God of heaven(Y) concerning this mystery,(Z) so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery(AA) was revealed to Daniel in a vision.(AB) Then Daniel praised the God of heaven(AC) 20 and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;(AD)
wisdom and power(AE) are his.
21 He changes times and seasons;(AF)
he deposes(AG) kings and raises up others.(AH)
He gives wisdom(AI) to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.(AJ)
22 He reveals deep and hidden things;(AK)
he knows what lies in darkness,(AL)
and light(AM) dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:(AN)
You have given me wisdom(AO) and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.(AP)”
Daniel Interprets the Dream
24 Then Daniel went to Arioch,(AQ) whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”
25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles(AR) from Judah(AS) who can tell the king what his dream means.”
26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar),(AT) “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”
27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,(AU) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.(AV) He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.(AW) Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind(AX) as you were lying in bed(AY) are these:(AZ)
29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.(BA) 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed(BB) to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.
31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue,(BC) awesome(BD) in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.(BE) It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed(BF) them.(BG) 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away(BH) without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain(BI) and filled the whole earth.(BJ)
36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.(BK) 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings.(BL) The God of heaven has given you dominion(BM) and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all.(BN) You are that head of gold.
39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.(BO) 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.(BP) 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush(BQ) all those kingdoms(BR) and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.(BS) 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock(BT) cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands(BU)—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.
“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.(BV) The dream is true(BW) and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate(BX) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering(BY) and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods(BZ) and the Lord of kings(CA) and a revealer of mysteries,(CB) for you were able to reveal this mystery.(CC)”
48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high(CD) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.(CE) 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon,(CF) while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.(CG)
