¹¹ Therefore because you ^(A)trample on^[a] the poor
    and you exact taxes of grain from him,
^(B)you have built houses of hewn stone,
    but you shall not dwell in them;
^(C)you have planted pleasant vineyards,
    but you shall not drink their wine.

⁹ Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

⁶ Therefore ^(A)a curse devours the earth,
    and its inhabitants ^(B)suffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
    and few men are left.
^7 (C)The wine mourns,
    the vine languishes,
    all the merry-hearted sigh.
^8 (D)The mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
    the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
    the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
⁹ No more do they drink wine ^(E)with singing;
    strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
^10 (F)The wasted city is broken down;
    ^(G)every house is shut up so that none can enter.
^11 (H)There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
    ^(I)all joy has grown dark;
    the gladness of the earth is banished.

²⁰ so that his ^(A)life loathes bread,
    and his appetite ^(B)the choicest food.
