^9 (A)Do not lie to one another, seeing that ^(B)you have put off ^(C)the old self^[a] with its practices

⁴ and Abel also brought of ^(A)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord ^(B)had regard for Abel and his offering, ⁵ but ^(C)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, ^(A)“I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?”

¹¹ When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, ¹² and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they ^(A)will kill me, but they will let you live. ¹³ Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”

²⁰ And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

¹⁵ But Sarah denied it,^[a] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

⁷ When the men of the place asked him about his wife, ^(A)he said, “She is my sister,” for ^(B)he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because ^(C)she was attractive in appearance. ⁸ When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with^[a] Rebekah his wife. ⁹ So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” ¹⁰ Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and ^(D)you would have brought guilt upon us.”
