O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, from the depth of our troubled, weary souls we cry out to you. Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy on us, because we have sinned against you. You reign as king forever, but we die and are gone forever. O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, hear our prayer. We are no better off than the dead. Our ancestors sinned against you, the Lord their God. They refused to obey you, and we are suffering the consequences of their sin. Forget the sinful things that our ancestors did in the past; at a time like this, think only of your power and reputation, for you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you. You have made us fear you, so that we might pray to you. Here in exile we will praise you because we have turned away from the sins of our ancestors. You have scattered us among the nations, and you have made them despise and curse us. You are punishing us for the sins of our ancestors when they rebelled against you, the Lord our God.

In Praise of Wisdom

(A)Listen, Israel, to the commands that promise life; pay attention, and you will become wise. 10 Why is it, Israel, that you find yourself in an enemy land? Why have you grown old in a foreign country? You are ritually unclean, like the dead; 11 you are already counted among the dead. But why? 12 It is because you have left the source of Wisdom! 13 If you had walked in God's ways, you would have lived in peace forever. 14 Learn where understanding, strength, and insight are to be found. Then you will know where to find a long and full life, light to guide you, and peace.

15 (B)No one has ever found where Wisdom lives or has entered her treasure house, 16-17 and those who have tried have vanished: the rulers of the nations, those who hunted wild animals and birds for sport, those who accumulated vast fortunes of silver and gold, which everyone trusts and will do anything to get, 18 and those who worried and schemed to make money, but who left no trace of their work behind. 19 They have all disappeared and gone down to the world of the dead. Others have come along to take their place. 20 A later generation was born and lived in the land, but they too did not discover the way to knowledge. They did not find the path to Wisdom or ever reach her. 21 Their children also failed. 22 Wisdom was not found by the Canaanites. It has not been discovered by the Edomites 23 although they search after knowledge. The way to Wisdom has not been found by the merchants of Merran and Tema or by those who relate fables or by any others who seek understanding.

24 O Israel, how great is the universe in which God dwells! How vast is all that he possesses! 25 There is no end to it; there is no way to measure how wide or how high it is. 26 (C)Here in early times the famous giants were born, a mighty race skilled in war. 27 But God did not choose them to be his people or show them the way of knowledge. 28 They died out because they had neither understanding nor insight.

29 No one has ever gone up into heaven to get Wisdom and bring her down out of the clouds. 30 No one has sailed across the seas to find Wisdom or bought her with precious gold. 31 No one knows how to get to her or how to discover the path that leads to her.

32 The only one who knows Wisdom is God, and he knows all things. With his understanding he found her. He established the earth for all time and filled it with all kinds of animals. 33 The light trembled and obeyed when he called. He sent it forth, and it appeared. 34 He called the stars, and they promptly answered; they took their places and gladly shone to please the one who made them. 35 He is our God, and there is none like him. 36 He discovered the entire path leading to understanding and gave Wisdom to his servant Israel, whom he loved. 37 From that time on, Wisdom appeared on earth and lived among us.

“O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the wearied spirit cry out to you. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned before you. For you are enthroned forever, and we are perishing forever.(A) O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, hear now the prayer of those of Israel who have died and of the children of those who sinned before you, who did not heed the voice of the Lord their God, so that calamities have clung to us.(B) Do not remember the iniquities of our ancestors, but in this crisis remember your power and your name. For you are the Lord our God, and it is you, O Lord, whom we will praise. For you have put the fear of you in our hearts so that we would call upon your name, and we will praise you in our exile, for we have put away from our hearts all the iniquity of our ancestors who sinned against you.(C) See, we are today in our exile where you have scattered us, to be reproached and cursed and punished for all the iniquities of our ancestors, who forsook the Lord our God.”(D)

In Praise of Wisdom

Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life;
    give ear and learn wisdom!
10 Why is it, O Israel, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies,
    that you are growing old in a foreign land,
11 that you are defiled with the dead,
    that you are counted among those in Hades?(E)
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.(F)
13 If you had walked in the way of God,
    you would be living in peace forever.(G)
14 Learn where there is wisdom,
    where there is strength,
    where there is understanding,
so that you may at the same time discern
    where there is length of days and life,
    where there is light for the eyes and peace.(H)

15 Who has found her place,
    and who has entered her storehouses?(I)
16 Where are the rulers of the nations
    and those who lorded it over the animals on earth;(J)
17 those who made sport of the birds of the air
    and who hoarded up silver and gold
in which people trust,
    and there is no end to their getting;(K)
18 those who schemed to get silver and were anxious,
    but there is no trace of their works?
19 They have vanished and gone down to Hades,
    and others have arisen in their place.(L)

20 Younger people have seen the light of day
    and have lived upon the earth,
but they have not learned the way to knowledge,
    nor understood her paths,
    nor laid hold of her.(M)
21 Their descendants have strayed far from their[a] way.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan
    or seen in Teman;(N)
23 the descendants of Hagar, who seek for understanding on the earth,
    the merchants of Merran and Teman,
    the storytellers and the seekers for understanding,
have not learned the way to wisdom
    or given thought to her paths.(O)

24 O Israel, how great is the house of God,
    how vast the territory that he possesses!
25 It is great and has no bounds;
    it is high and immeasurable.
26 The giants were born there, who were famous of old,
    great in stature, expert in war.(P)
27 God did not choose them
    or give them the way to knowledge,(Q)
28 so they perished because they had no wisdom;
    they perished through their folly.

29 Who has gone up into heaven and taken her
    and brought her down from the clouds?(R)
30 Who has gone over the sea and found her
    and will buy her for pure gold?(S)
31 No one knows the way to her
    or is concerned about the path to her.
32 But the one who knows all things knows her;
    he found her by his understanding.
The one who prepared the earth for all time
    filled it with four-footed creatures;(T)
33 the one who sends forth the light and it goes,
    he called it, and it obeyed him, trembling;
34 the stars shone in their watches and were glad;
35     he called them, and they said, “Here we are!”
    They shone with gladness for him who made them.(U)
36 This is our God;
    no other can be compared to him.
37 He found the whole way to knowledge
    and gave her to his servant Jacob
    and to Israel, whom he loved.(V)
38 Afterward she appeared on earth
    and lived with humankind.(W)

Chapter 3

Lord Almighty, God of Israel, the anguished soul, the dismayed spirit cries out to you. Hear, Lord, and have mercy, for you are a merciful God; have mercy on us, who have sinned against you: for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.(A) Lord Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of the dead of Israel, children who sinned against you; they did not listen to the voice of the Lord, their God, and their evils cling to us.(B) Do not remember the wicked deeds of our ancestors, but remember at this time your power and your name, for you are the Lord our God; and you, Lord, we will praise! This is why you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our exile, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our ancestors who sinned against you.(C) See, today we are in exile, where you have scattered us, an object of reproach and cursing and punishment for all the wicked deeds of our ancestors, who withdrew from the Lord, our God.”

II. Praise of Wisdom[a]

A. Importance of Wisdom

Hear, Israel, the commandments of life:
    listen, and know prudence!(D)
10 How is it, Israel,
    that you are in the land of your foes,
    grown old in a foreign land,
11 Defiled with the dead,
    counted among those destined for Hades?(E)
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom!(F)
13     Had you walked in the way of God,
    you would have dwelt in enduring peace.(G)

14 Learn where prudence is,
    where strength, where understanding;
That you may know also
    where are length of days, and life,
    where light of the eyes, and peace.(H)
15 Who has found the place of wisdom?(I)
    Who has entered into her treasuries?
16 Where are the rulers of the nations,
    who lorded it over the wild beasts of the earth,(J)
17     made sport of the birds in the heavens,
Who heaped up the silver,
    the gold in which people trust,
    whose possessions were unlimited,
18 Who schemed anxiously for money,
    their doings beyond discovery?
19 They have vanished, gone down to Hades,
    and others have risen up in their stead.
20 Later generations have seen the light of day,
    have dwelt on the earth,
But the way to understanding they have not known,
21     they have not perceived her paths or reached her;
    their children remain far from the way to her.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan,[b]
    nor seen in Teman.(K)
23 The descendants of Hagar who seek knowledge on earth,
    the merchants of Medan and Tema,(L)
    the storytellers and those seeking knowledge—
These have not known the way to wisdom,
    nor have they kept her paths in mind.

B. Inaccessibility of Wisdom

24 O Israel, how vast is the dwelling of God,[c]
    how broad the scope of his dominion:
25 Vast and endless,
    high and immeasurable!
26 In it were born the giants,[d]
    renowned at the first,
    huge in stature, skilled in war.(M)
27 These God did not choose,
    nor did he give them the way of understanding;(N)
28 They perished for lack of prudence,
    perished through their own folly.(O)

29 Who has gone up to the heavens and taken her,
    bringing her down from the clouds?(P)
30 Who has crossed the sea and found her,
    bearing her away rather than choice gold?
31 None knows the way to her,
    nor has at heart her path.
32 But the one who knows all things knows her;
    he has probed her by his knowledge—
The one who established the earth for all time,
    and filled it with four-footed animals,
33 Who sends out the lightning, and it goes,
    calls it, and trembling it obeys him;
34 Before whom the stars at their posts
    shine and rejoice.
35 When he calls them, they answer, “Here we are!”
    shining with joy for their Maker.(Q)
36 Such is our God;
    no other is to be compared to him:

C. Wisdom Contained in the Law

37 [e]He has uncovered the whole way of understanding,
    and has given her to Jacob, his servant,
    to Israel, his beloved.(R)

38 Thus she has appeared on earth,
    is at home with mortals.(S)

Notas al pie

  1. 3:9–4:4 This poem in praise of personified Wisdom utilizes the theme of Jb 28 (where is wisdom to be found?) and it identifies wisdom and law, as in Sir 24:22–23.
  2. 3:22–23 Despite the renown for wisdom of the peoples of Canaan and Phoenicia (Ez 28:3–4), of Teman (Jer 49:7), of the descendants of Hagar or the Arabians of Medan and Tema, they did not possess true wisdom, which is found only in the law of God (Bar 4:1).
  3. 3:24 The dwelling of God: here, the whole universe; cf. Is 66:1.
  4. 3:26 The giants: Gn 6:1–4 reflects a tradition about giants who existed before the flood; this was developed in the non-canonical Book of Enoch.
  5. 3:37–38 As in Sir 24:8, Wisdom is given to Israel but also is said to live with all human beings (Prv 8:31).

“‘O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the wearied spirit cry out to thee. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned before thee. For thou art enthroned for ever, and we are perishing for ever. O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, hear now the prayer of the dead of Israel and of the sons of those who sinned before thee, who did not heed the voice of the Lord their God, so that calamities have clung to us. Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but in this crisis remember thy power and thy name. For thou art the Lord our God, and thee, O Lord, will we praise. For thou hast put the fear of thee in our hearts in order that we should call upon thy name; and we will praise thee in our exile, for we have put away from our hearts all the iniquity of our fathers who sinned before thee. Behold, we are today in our exile where thou hast scattered us, to be reproached and cursed and punished for all the iniquities of our fathers who forsook the Lord our God.’”

In Praise of Wisdom

Hear the commandments of life, O Israel;
    give ear, and learn wisdom!
10 Why is it, O Israel, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies,
    that you are growing old in a foreign country,
that you are defiled with the dead,
11     that you are counted among those in Hades?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
13 If you had walked in the way of God,
    you would be dwelling in peace for ever.
14 Learn where there is wisdom,
    where there is strength,
    where there is understanding,
that you may at the same time discern
    where there is length of days, and life,
    where there is light for the eyes, and peace.

15 Who has found her place?
    And who has entered her storehouses?
16 Where are the princes of the nations,
    and those who rule over the beasts on earth;
17 those who have sport with the birds of the air,
    and who hoard up silver and gold,
in which men trust,
    and there is no end to their getting;
18 those who scheme to get silver, and are anxious,
    whose labors are beyond measure?
19 They have vanished and gone down to Hades,
    and others have arisen in their place.

20 Young men have seen the light of day,
    and have dwelt upon the earth;
but they have not learned the way to knowledge,
    nor understood her paths,
    nor laid hold of her.
21 Their sons have strayed far from her[a] way.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan,
    nor seen in Teman;
23 the sons of Hagar, who seek for understanding on the earth,
    the merchants of Merran and Teman,
    the story-tellers and the seekers for understanding,
have not learned the way to wisdom,
    nor given thought to her paths.

24 O Israel, how great is the house of God!
    And how vast the territory that he possesses!
25 It is great and has no bounds;
    it is high and immeasurable.
26 The giants were born there, who were famous of old,
    great in stature, expert in war.
27 God did not choose them,
    nor give them the way to knowledge;
28 so they perished because they had no wisdom,
    they perished through their folly.

29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her,
    and brought her down from the clouds?
30 Who has gone over the sea, and found her,
    and will buy her for pure gold?
31 No one knows the way to her,
    or is concerned about the path to her.
32 But he who knows all things knows her,
    he found her by his understanding.
He who prepared the earth for all time
    filled it with four-footed creatures;
33 he who sends forth the light, and it goes,
    called it, and it obeyed him in fear;
34 the stars shone in their watches, and were glad;
    he called them, and they said, “Here we are!”
    They shone with gladness for him who made them.
35 This is our God;
    no other can be compared to him!
36 He found the whole way to knowledge,
    and gave her to Jacob his servant
    and to Israel whom he loved.
37 Afterward she appeared upon earth
    and lived among men.
