Arringa di Paolo ai Giudei di Gerusalemme
22 «Fratelli e padri, ascoltate la mia difesa davanti a voi». 2 Quando sentirono che parlava loro in lingua ebraica, fecero silenzio ancora di più. 3 Ed egli continuò: «Io sono un Giudeo, nato a Tarso di Cilicia, ma cresciuto in questa città, formato alla scuola di Gamaliele nelle più rigide norme della legge paterna, pieno di zelo per Dio, come oggi siete tutti voi. 4 Io perseguitai a morte questa nuova dottrina, arrestando e gettando in prigione uomini e donne, 5 come può darmi testimonianza il sommo sacerdote e tutto il collegio degli anziani. Da loro ricevetti lettere per i nostri fratelli di Damasco e partii per condurre anche quelli di là come prigionieri a Gerusalemme, per essere puniti.
6 Mentre ero in viaggio e mi avvicinavo a Damasco, verso mezzogiorno, all'improvviso una gran luce dal cielo rifulse attorno a me; 7 caddi a terra e sentii una voce che mi diceva: Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti? 8 Risposi: Chi sei, o Signore? Mi disse: Io sono Gesù il Nazareno, che tu perseguiti. 9 Quelli che erano con me videro la luce, ma non udirono colui che mi parlava. 10 Io dissi allora: Che devo fare, Signore? E il Signore mi disse: Alzati e prosegui verso Damasco; là sarai informato di tutto ciò che è stabilito che tu faccia. 11 E poiché non ci vedevo più, a causa del fulgore di quella luce, guidato per mano dai miei compagni, giunsi a Damasco.
12 Un certo Anania, un devoto osservante della legge e in buona reputazione presso tutti i Giudei colà residenti, 13 venne da me, mi si accostò e disse: Saulo, fratello, torna a vedere! E in quell'istante io guardai verso di lui e riebbi la vista. 14 Egli soggiunse: Il Dio dei nostri padri ti ha predestinato a conoscere la sua volontà, a vedere il Giusto e ad ascoltare una parola dalla sua stessa bocca, 15 perché gli sarai testimone davanti a tutti gli uomini delle cose che hai visto e udito. 16 E ora perché aspetti? Alzati, ricevi il battesimo e lavati dai tuoi peccati, invocando il suo nome.
17 Dopo il mio ritorno a Gerusalemme, mentre pregavo nel tempio, fui rapito in estasi 18 e vidi Lui che mi diceva: Affrettati ed esci presto da Gerusalemme, perché non accetteranno la tua testimonianza su di me. 19 E io dissi: Signore, essi sanno che facevo imprigionare e percuotere nella sinagoga quelli che credevano in te; 20 quando si versava il sangue di Stefano, tuo testimone, anch'io ero presente e approvavo e custodivo i vestiti di quelli che lo uccidevano. 21 Allora mi disse: Và, perché io ti manderò lontano, tra i pagani».
Paolo, cittadino romano
22 Fino a queste parole erano stati ad ascoltarlo, ma allora alzarono la voce gridando: «Toglilo di mezzo; non deve più vivere!». 23 E poiché continuavano a urlare, a gettar via i mantelli e a lanciar polvere in aria, 24 il tribuno ordinò di portarlo nella fortezza, prescrivendo di interrogarlo a colpi di flagello al fine di sapere per quale motivo gli gridavano contro in tal modo.
25 Ma quando l'ebbero legato con le cinghie, Paolo disse al centurione che gli stava accanto: «Potete voi flagellare un cittadino romano, non ancora giudicato?». 26 Udito ciò, il centurione corse a riferire al tribuno: «Che cosa stai per fare? Quell'uomo è un romano!». 27 Allora il tribuno si recò da Paolo e gli domandò: «Dimmi, tu sei cittadino romano?». Rispose: «Sì». 28 Replicò il tribuno: «Io questa cittadinanza l'ho acquistata a caro prezzo». Paolo disse: «Io, invece, lo sono di nascita!». 29 E subito si allontanarono da lui quelli che dovevano interrogarlo. Anche il tribuno ebbe paura, rendendosi conto che Paolo era cittadino romano e che lui lo aveva messo in catene.
Comparsa davanti al sinedrio
30 Il giorno seguente, volendo conoscere la realtà dei fatti, cioè il motivo per cui veniva accusato dai Giudei, gli fece togliere le catene e ordinò che si riunissero i sommi sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio; vi fece condurre Paolo e lo presentò davanti a loro.

22 “各位父老兄弟，请听我解释！” 2 在场的人听见保罗讲的是希伯来话，更加安静了。保罗说： 3 “我是犹太人，生于基利迦的大数，在耶路撒冷长大，曾在迦玛列门下严格地按着我们祖先的律法接受教育，像你们今日一样热心事奉上帝。 4 我曾经把信奉这道的男女信徒抓进监狱，迫害他们，置他们于死地。 5 大祭司和众长老都可以为我作证。我还拿着他们写给大马士革的犹太人的信去拘捕那里的信徒，押回耶路撒冷受刑。
6 “当我快到大马士革的时候，大约中午时分，突然从天上有一道强光四面照着我。 7 我就扑倒在地，听见有声音对我说，‘扫罗！扫罗！你为什么迫害我？’ 8 我回答说，‘主啊，你是谁？’他说，‘我就是你迫害的拿撒勒人耶稣！’ 9 我的同伴虽然也看见那道强光，却听不懂那位说话者的声音。 10 接着我又问，‘主啊！我该怎么办？’主说，‘起来，到大马士革去，那里会有人将指派给你的事告诉你。’
11 “那道耀眼的光照得我双眼失明，于是同行的人拉着我的手，带我进了大马士革。 12 那里有一个严守律法的虔诚人名叫亚拿尼亚，深受当地所有犹太人的尊敬。 13 他来探望我，站在我身边说，‘扫罗弟兄，重见光明吧！’就在那一刻，我抬头看见了他。 14 他又说，‘我们祖先的上帝拣选了你，要你明白祂的旨意，又让你亲自看见那位公义者、听到祂的声音。 15 因为你将做祂的见证人，把所见所闻告诉万民。 16 现在你还等什么呢？起来求告祂的名，接受洗礼，洗净你的罪。’
17 “后来，我回到耶路撒冷，在圣殿里祷告的时候，进入异象， 18 看见主对我说，‘赶快离开耶路撒冷，因为这里的人不会接受你为我做的见证。’ 19 我说，‘主啊！他们都知道我从前搜遍各会堂，逮捕、毒打信你的人。 20 当你的见证人司提凡为你流血殉道时，我自己也站在旁边赞同杀他的人，还替他们保管衣服。’ 21 主却对我说，‘去吧！我要差遣你到遥远的外族人那里。’”
因罗马公民身份而免刑
22 众人一听到这里，就高喊：“从世上除掉这样的人！他不配活着！” 23 百姓咆哮着脱掉外衣，扬起尘土。 24 千夫长下令把保罗押回营房，预备鞭打拷问他，要查出众人向他咆哮的缘由。 25 他们把保罗绑起来正要鞭打，保罗问旁边的百夫长：“未经定罪就拷打罗马公民合法吗？”
26 百夫长一听，立刻去禀告千夫长说：“你看该怎么办？这人是罗马公民。”
27 千夫长就来问保罗：“告诉我，你是罗马公民吗？”
保罗说：“是的。”
28 千夫长说：“我花了很多钱才当上罗马公民！”
保罗说：“我生来就是。”
29 那些准备拷问保罗的士兵立刻退下了。千夫长也害怕起来，因为发现保罗是罗马公民，他却下令捆绑了保罗。
保罗在公会申辩
30 第二天，千夫长想知道保罗被犹太人指控的真相，就为保罗松了绑，并招聚了祭司长和全公会的人，然后将保罗带来，让他站在众人面前。

22 “(A)Men, brothers, and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you.”
2 And when they heard that he was addressing them in the (B)Hebrew language, they became even quieter; and he *said,
3 “(C)I am (D)a Jew, born in (E)Tarsus of (F)Cilicia, but having been brought up in this city, having been instructed at the feet of (G)Gamaliel according to the (H)strictness of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as (I)you all are today, 4 (J)I persecuted this (K)Way to the death, binding and delivering both men and women into prisons, 5 as also (L)the high priest and all (M)the Council of the elders [a]can testify. From them I also (N)received letters to (O)the brothers, and started off for (P)Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem [b]as prisoners to be punished.
6 “(Q)But it happened that as I was on my way, approaching Damascus about noontime, a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me, 7 and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ 8 And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am (R)Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’ 9 And those who were with me (S)beheld the light, to be sure, but (T)did not [c]understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me. 10 And I said, ‘(U)What should I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise up and go on into Damascus, and there you will be told of all that has been determined for you to do.’ 11 But since I (V)could not see because of the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 “Now a certain (W)Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law, and (X)well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me, and standing near, said to me, ‘(Y)Brother Saul, regain your sight!’ And [d](Z)at that very hour I regained my sight and saw him. 14 And he said, ‘(AA)The God of our fathers has (AB)appointed you to know His will and to (AC)see the (AD)Righteous One and to hear a [e]voice from His mouth. 15 For you will be (AE)a witness for Him to all men of (AF)what you have seen and heard. 16 Now why do you delay? (AG)Rise up and be baptized, and (AH)wash away your sins, (AI)calling on His name.’
17 “Now it happened when I (AJ)returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I (AK)fell into a trance, 18 and I saw Him saying to me, ‘(AL)Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your witness about Me.’ 19 And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another (AM)I used to imprison and (AN)beat those who believed in You. 20 And (AO)when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and guarding the garments of those who were slaying him.’ 21 And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away (AP)to the Gentiles.’”
Paul, a Citizen of Rome
22 And they were listening to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said, “(AQ)Away with such a fellow from the earth, for (AR)he should not be allowed to live!” 23 And as they were crying out and (AS)throwing off their garments and (AT)tossing dust into the air, 24 the [f]commander ordered him to be brought into (AU)the barracks, stating that he should be (AV)examined by flogging so that he might find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way. 25 But when they stretched him out [g]with leather straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it [h]lawful for you to flog (AW)a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?” 26 And when the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported to him, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.” 27 And the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 And the commander answered, “I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money.” And Paul said, “But I have been born a citizen.” 29 Therefore those who were about to (AX)examine him immediately withdrew from him; and the commander also (AY)was afraid when he learned that he was a Roman, and because he had (AZ)bound him.
Paul Before the Sanhedrin
30 But on the next day, (BA)wishing to know for certain why he had been accused by the Jews, he (BB)released him and ordered the chief priests and all (BC)the Sanhedrin to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
