Il vangelo annunciato ai pagani; Cornelio invita Pietro a casa sua

10 (A)Vi era in Cesarea un uomo di nome Cornelio, centurione della coorte detta «Italica». 2 Quest’uomo era pio e timorato di Dio con tutta la sua famiglia, faceva molte elemosine al popolo e pregava Dio assiduamente.

3 Egli vide chiaramente in visione, verso l’ora nona[a] del giorno, un angelo di Dio che entrò da lui e gli disse: «Cornelio!» 4 Egli, guardandolo fisso e preso da spavento, rispose: «Che c’è, Signore?» E l’angelo gli disse: «Le tue preghiere e le tue elemosine sono salite, come una ricordanza, davanti a Dio. 5 E ora manda degli uomini a Ioppe e fa’ venire un certo[b] Simone, detto anche Pietro. 6 Egli è ospite di un tal Simone, conciatore di pelli, la cui casa è vicino al mare[c]».

7 Appena l’angelo che gli parlava se ne fu andato, Cornelio chiamò[d] due dei [suoi] domestici e un pio soldato fra i suoi attendenti 8 e, dopo aver raccontato loro ogni cosa, li mandò a Ioppe.

9 (B)Il giorno seguente, mentre quelli erano in viaggio e si avvicinavano alla città, Pietro salì sulla terrazza, verso l’ora sesta[e], per pregare. 10 Ebbe però fame e desiderava prendere cibo. Ma, mentre glielo preparavano, fu rapito in estasi. 11 Vide il cielo aperto, e un oggetto che scendeva [verso di lui] simile a una grande tovaglia calata a terra per i quattro angoli[f]. 12 In essa c’era ogni sorta di quadrupedi, rettili della terra e uccelli del cielo[g]. 13 E una voce gli disse: «Àlzati, Pietro; ammazza e mangia». 14 Ma Pietro rispose: «Assolutamente no, Signore, perché io non ho mai mangiato nulla di impuro e di contaminato[h]». 15 E la voce parlò una seconda volta: «Le cose che Dio ha purificate, non farle tu impure». 16 Questo avvenne per tre volte; poi d’un tratto quell’oggetto fu ritirato in cielo[i].

17 Mentre Pietro, dentro di sé, si domandava che cosa significasse la visione che aveva avuto, ecco gli uomini mandati da Cornelio, i quali, avendo domandato della casa di Simone, si fermarono alla porta. 18 Avendo chiamato, chiesero se Simone, detto anche Pietro, alloggiasse lì.

19 Mentre Pietro stava ripensando alla visione, lo Spirito {gli} disse: «Ecco tre uomini che ti cercano. 20 Àlzati dunque, scendi e va’ con loro, senza fartene scrupolo, perché li ho mandati io». 21 Pietro, sceso verso quegli uomini[j], disse loro: «Eccomi, sono io quello che cercate; qual è il motivo per cui siete qui?» 22 Essi risposero: «Il centurione Cornelio, uomo giusto e timorato di Dio, del quale rende buona testimonianza tutto il popolo dei Giudei, è stato divinamente avvertito da un santo angelo di farti chiamare in casa sua, e di ascoltare quello che avrai da dirgli». 23 Pietro allora li fece entrare e li ospitò. Il giorno seguente andò con loro, e alcuni fratelli di Ioppe lo accompagnarono.

24 L’indomani arrivarono a Cesarea. Cornelio li stava aspettando e aveva chiamato i suoi parenti e i suoi amici intimi. 25 Mentre Pietro entrava, Cornelio, andandogli incontro, si gettò ai suoi piedi per adorarlo. 26 Ma Pietro lo rialzò, dicendo: «Àlzati, anch’io sono uomo!» 27 Conversando con lui, entrò e, trovate molte persone lì riunite, 28 disse loro: «Voi sapete come non sia lecito a un Giudeo avere relazioni con uno straniero o entrare in casa sua[k]; ma Dio mi ha mostrato che nessun uomo deve essere ritenuto impuro o contaminato. 29 Perciò, essendo stato chiamato, sono venuto senza fare obiezioni. Ora vi chiedo: qual è il motivo per cui mi avete mandato a chiamare?»

30 Cornelio disse: «Quattro giorni or sono stavo pregando, all’ora nona, in casa mia, quand’ecco un uomo mi si presentò davanti, in veste risplendente[l], 31 e disse: “Cornelio, la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e le tue elemosine sono state ricordate davanti a Dio. 32 Manda dunque qualcuno a Ioppe e fa’ venire Simone, detto anche Pietro; egli è ospite in casa di Simone, conciatore di pelli, in riva al mare [; quando sarà venuto, egli ti parlerà]”. 33 Perciò subito mandai a chiamarti, e tu hai fatto bene a venire; ora dunque siamo tutti qui presenti davanti a Dio per ascoltare tutto ciò che ti è stato comandato dal Signore[m]».

34 (C)Allora Pietro, cominciando a parlare[n], disse: «In verità comprendo che Dio non ha riguardi personali, 35 ma che in qualunque nazione chi lo teme e opera giustamente gli è gradito. 36 Questa è la parola che egli ha diretta ai figli d’Israele, portando il lieto messaggio di pace per mezzo di Gesù Cristo. Egli è il Signore di tutti. 37 Voi sapete quello che è avvenuto in tutta la Giudea, incominciando dalla Galilea, dopo il battesimo predicato da Giovanni, 38 vale a dire, la storia di Gesù di Nazaret: come Dio lo ha unto di Spirito Santo e di potenza, e come egli è andato dappertutto facendo del bene e guarendo tutti quelli che erano sotto il potere del diavolo, perché Dio era con lui. 39 E noi siamo testimoni di tutte le cose da lui compiute nel paese dei Giudei e in Gerusalemme; essi lo uccisero, appendendolo a un legno. 40 Ma Dio lo ha risuscitato il terzo giorno e volle che egli si manifestasse 41 non a tutto il popolo, ma ai testimoni prescelti da Dio; cioè a noi, che abbiamo mangiato e bevuto con lui dopo la sua risurrezione dai morti. 42 E ci ha comandato di annunciare al popolo e di testimoniare che egli è colui che è stato da Dio costituito giudice dei vivi e dei morti. 43 Di lui attestano tutti i profeti che chiunque crede in lui riceve il perdono dei peccati mediante il suo nome».

44 Mentre Pietro parlava così, lo Spirito Santo scese su tutti quelli che ascoltavano la Parola. 45 E tutti i credenti circoncisi, che erano venuti con Pietro, si meravigliarono che il dono dello Spirito Santo fosse dato anche agli stranieri[o], 46 perché li udivano parlare in altre lingue e glorificare Dio.

47 Allora Pietro disse: «C’è forse qualcuno che possa negare l’acqua e impedire che siano battezzati questi che hanno ricevuto lo Spirito Santo come noi?» 48 E comandò che fossero battezzati nel nome di Gesù Cristo[p]. Allora essi lo pregarono di rimanere alcuni giorni con loro.

Cornelius Calls for Peter

10 At Caesarea(A) there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing;(B) he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon(C) he had a vision.(D) He distinctly saw an angel(E) of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.

The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering(F) before God.(G) 5 Now send men to Joppa(H) to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner,(I) whose house is by the sea.”

7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.(J)

Peter’s Vision(K)

9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof(L) to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.(M) 11 He saw heaven opened(N) and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

14 “Surely not, Lord!”(O) Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”(P)

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”(Q)

16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision,(R) the men sent by Cornelius(S) found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.

19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision,(T) the Spirit said(U) to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”(V)

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man,(W) who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”(X) 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers(Y) from Joppa went along.(Z) 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea.(AA) Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”(AB)

27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.(AC) 28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile.(AD) But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.(AE) 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes(AF) stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism(AG) 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.(AH) 36 You know the message(AI) God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news(AJ) of peace(AK) through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.(AL) 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed(AM) Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing(AN) all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.(AO)

39 “We are witnesses(AP) of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,(AQ) 40 but God raised him from the dead(AR) on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people,(AS) but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate(AT) and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people(AU) and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.(AV) 43 All the prophets testify about him(AW) that everyone(AX) who believes(AY) in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”(AZ)

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on(BA) all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter(BB) were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out(BC) even on Gentiles.(BD) 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b](BE) and praising God.

Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.(BF) They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”(BG) 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.(BH) Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

Ipinatawag ni Cornelio si Pedro

10 May isang lalaki sa Cesarea na ang pangalan ay Cornelio. Siya ay kapitan ng tinatawag na balangay ng mga taga-Italia.

2 Siya ay isang taong palasamba at may takot sa Diyos kasama ng kaniyang sambahayan. Marami siyang pagkakaloob sa mga kahabag-habag at laging nana­nalanging sa Diyos para sa iba. 3 Isang araw, nang ikasiyam pa lamang ang oras, maliwanag siyang nakakita ng isang pangitain. Nakita niya ang anghel ng Diyos na papalapit sa kaniya. Sinabi nito sa kaniya: Cornelio.

4 Siya ay tumitig sa kaniya at sa takot ay sinabi niya sa kaniya: Ano iyon, Panginoon?

Sinabi niya sa kaniya: Ang iyong mga pananalangin atmga pagkakaloob sa mga kahabag-habag ay pumailanglang na isang alaala sa harap ng Diyos.

5 Magsugo ka ng mga tao ngayon sa Jope. Ipasundo mo si Simon na tinatawag na Pedro. 6 Siya ay nanunuluyan sa isang taong nagngangalang Simonna mangungulti ng balat ng hayop. Ang kaniyang bahay aynasa tabing dagat. Sasabihin ni Pedro sa iyo ang dapat mong gawin.

7 Nang umalis ang anghel na nagsalita kay Cornelio, tumawag siya ng dalawa sa kaniyang mga katulong. Tumawag din siya ng isang kawal niya na palasamba sa Diyos napatuloy na naglilingkod sa kaniya. 8 Nang maisaysay na sa kanila ni Cornelio ang lahat ng mga bagay, sila ay isinugo niya sa Jope.

Ang Pangitain ni Pedro

9 Kinabukasan, habang naglalakbay sila at papalapit na sa lungsod, si Pedro ay umakyat sa bubong ng bahay upang manalangin. Noon ay ikaanim na ang oras.

10 Siya ay nagutom at ibig na niyang kumain. Ngunit samantalang sila ay naghahanda, sa kaniyang kalalagayang tulad ng nananaginip, isang pangitain ang bumaba sa kaniya. 11 Nakita niyang bukas ang langit at may isang kagamitang bumababa sa kaniya. Ito ay gaya ng isang malapad na kumot na nakabuhol ang apat na sulok na bumababa sa lupa. 12 Naroon ang lahat ng uri ng mga hayop na may apat na paa. Naroon din ang mababangis na hayop at ang mga gumagapang sa lupa. Naroon din ang mga ibon sa himpapawid. 13 Dumating sa kaniya ang isang tinig: Tumindig ka Pedro. Kumatay ka at kumain.

14 Ngunit sinabi ni Pedro: Hindi maaari, Panginoon, sapagkat kailanman ay hindi ako kumain ng anumang bagay na pangkaraniwan at marumi.

15 Muli niyang narinig ang tinig sa ikalawang pagkakataon: Anumang nilinis ng Diyos ay huwag mong ipalagay na pangkaraniwan.

16 Ito ay nangyari ng tatlong ulit at muling binatak sa langit ang sisidlan.

17 Totoong nalito si Pedro kung ano ang kahulugan ng pangitain na nakita niya. Narito, nang mga sandaling iyon ay naipagtanong na ng mga taong sinugo ni Cornelio kung saan ang bahay ni Simon. Sila ay tumayo sa tarangkahan. 18 Sila ay tumawag at nagtanong kung si Simon na tinatawag na Pedro ay nanunuluyan doon.

19 Samantalang iniisip ni Pedro ang patungkol sa pangitain, sinabi sa kaniya ng Espiritu: Narito, hinahanap ka ng tatlong lalaki. 20 Subalit tumindig ka at bumaba ka at sumama ka sa kanila. Huwag ka nang mag-alinlangan pa sapagkat sila ay aking sinugo.

21 Nanaog si Pedro papunta sa mga lalaki na pinadala ni Cornelio sa kaniya. Sinabi niya: Narito, ako ang hinahanap ninyo. Bakit kayo naparito?

22 Sinabi nila: Si Cornelio ay isang kapitan ng isang balangay at taong matuwid at may takot sa Diyos. Siya ay may mabuting patotoo sa buong bansa ng mga Judio. Pinagtagu­bilinan siya ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng isang banal na anghel na ikaw ay papuntahin sa kaniyang bahay upang siya ay makarinig ng salita mula sa iyo. 23 Kaya sila ay pinapasok at binigyan ng matutuluyan.

Si Pedro sa Tahanan ni Cornelio

Kinabukasan, umalis si Pedro na kasama nila. Sila ay sinamahan ng ilang kapatid na lalaki mula sa Jope.

24 Kina­bukasan dumating sila sa Cesarea. Sila ay hinihintay ni Cornelio. Tinipon niya ang kaniyang kamag-anakan at kani­yang mga matatalik na kaibigan. 25 Nangyari, na pagpasok ni Pedro ay sinalubong siya ni Cornelio. Nagpatirapa siya sa kaniyang paanan at siya ay sinamba. 26 Ngunit itinindig siya ni Pedro na sinasabi: Tumindig ka, ako ay tao rin naman.

27 Habang nag-uusap sila, pumasok siya at nakita niyang marami ang nagkakatipun-tipon. 28 Sinabi niya sa kanila: Alam ninyo na hindi ayon sa kautusan na ang Judio ay makisama o lumapit sa isang taga-ibang bansa. Ngunit ipina­kita sa akin ng Diyos na huwag kong tawaging pangkaraniwan o marungis ang sinuman. 29 Iyan ang dahilan kaya nang ako ay ipasundo mo, naparito akong hindi tumututol. Kaya nga, itinatanong ko sa inyo, sa anong kadahilanan ipinasundo mo ako?

30 Sinabi ni Cornelio: May apat na araw na hanggang sa oras na ito na ako ay nag-aayuno. Sa ikasiyam na oras sa aking bahay, sa aking pananalangin, at narito, isang lalaki ang tumindig sa harapan ko. Siya ay nakasuot ng maningning na damit. 31 Sinabi niya: Cornelio, dininig ang dalangin mo. Ang iyong mga pagkakaloob sa kahabag-habag ay inaalaala sa paningin ng Diyos. 32 Magsugo ka nga sa Jope, at anyayahan mo si Simon na tinatawag na Pedro. Siya ay nanunuluyan sa bahay ni Simong mangungulti ng balat ng hayop. Ang bahay niya ay nasa tabing dagat. Pagdating niya ay magsasalita siya sa iyo. 33 Kaagad-agad nga ay nagpasugo ako sa iyo. Mabuti at naparito ka. Kaya nga, naririto kaming lahat sa paningin ng Diyos upang dinggin ang lahat ng bagay na ipinag-utos sa iyo ng Diyos.

34 Ibinukas ni Pedro ang kaniyang bibig at nagsabi: Totoo ngang naunawaan kong ang Diyos ay hindi nagtatangi ng mga tao. 35 Subalit sa bawat bansa ang taong may takot sa kaniya at gumagawa ng katuwiran ay kaniyang tinatanggap. 36 Alam ninyo ang salitang ipinadala ng Diyos sa mga anak ni Israel na naghahayag ng ebanghelyo ng kapayapaan sa pamamagitan ni Jesucristo. Siya ay Panginoon ng lahat. 37 Ang pangyayaring ito ay naganap sa buong Judea, simula sa Galilea, pagkatapos ng bawtismo na ipinangaral ni Juan. 38 Alam ninyo kung papaanong si Jesus, na taga-Nazaret ay pinahiran ng Diyos ng Banal na Espiritu at ng kapangyarihan. Siya ay naglilibot na gumagawa ng mabuti. Pinagaling niya ang lahat ng mga pinahihirapan ng diyablo sapagkat sumasa kaniya ang Diyos.

39 Mga saksi kami sa lahat ng mga bagay na ginawa niya sa lupain ng mga Judio at sa Jerusalem. Pinatay nila siya sa pamamagitan ng pagbitin sa kahoy. 40 Nang ikatlong araw siya ay muling binuhay ng Diyos at siya ay inihayag. 41 Inihayag siya hindi sa lahat ng mga tao kundi sa mga saksi na hinirang ng Diyos nang una. Ito ay sa amin na kasalo niyang kumain at uminom pagkatapos niyang bumangon mula sa mga patay. 42 Iniutos niya sa amin na mangaral sa mga tao at lubos na pinagpapatotoo na siya ang itinalaga ng Diyos na maging hukom ng mga buhay at ng mga patay. 43 Siya ang pinatotohanan ng lahat ng mga propeta. Pinatotohanan nila na ang bawat sumasampalataya sa kaniya ay magkakamit ng kapatawaran sa mga kasalanan sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang pangalan.

44 Samantalang nagsasalita pa si Pedro, bumaba ang Banal na Espiritu sa lahat ng nakikinig ng salita. 45 Ang lahat ng mga mananampalatayang nasa pagtutuli na kasama ni Pedro ay namangha sapagkat ibinuhos din naman sa mga Gentil ang kaloob na Banal na Espiritu. 46 Nalaman nila ito dahil narinig nila ang mga ito na nagsasalita ng mga wika at nagpupuri sa Diyos.

47 Nang magkagayon ay sumagot si Pedro: Maipagbabawal ba ng sinuman ang paggamit ng tubig upang mabawtismuhan itong mga tumanggap ng Banal na Espiritu na gaya naman natin? 48 Inutusan niya sila na magpabawtismo sa pangalan ng Pangi­noon. Pagkatapos nito hiniling nila sa kaniya na manatili ng mga ilang araw.
