Judgment on Judah

Thus says the Lord:

(A)“For three transgressions of Judah,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because (B)they have rejected the law of the Lord,
    and have not kept his statutes,
but (C)their lies have led them astray,
    those after which their fathers walked.

24 Therefore, (A)as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so (B)their root will be (C)as rottenness,
    and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have (D)rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
    and have (E)despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
25 Therefore (F)the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,
    and (G)the mountains quaked;
and their corpses were (H)as refuse
    in the midst of the streets.
(I)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, (A)he tore his clothes. 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and (B)Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and (C)Achbor the son of (D)Micaiah, and Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, 13 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is (E)the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

14 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of (F)Tikvah, son of (G)Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in (H)the Second Quarter), and they talked with her. 15 And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 16 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. 17 (I)Because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore (J)my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.

  1. Hosea 5:13 Or to King Jareb

(A)we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly (B)and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. (C)We have not listened to (D)your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to (E)our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. To you, (F)O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, (G)those who are near and (H)those who are far away, in (I)all the lands to which you have driven them, because of (J)the treachery that they have committed against you. To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because (K)we have sinned against you. (L)To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10 (M)and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by (N)his servants the prophets. 11 (O)All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, (P)refusing to obey your voice. (Q)And the curse and oath (R)that are written in the Law of (S)Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because (T)we have sinned against him. 12 He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against (U)our rulers who ruled us,[a] by (V)bringing upon us a great calamity. (W)For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.

  1. Daniel 9:12 Or our judges who judged us

11 (A)“Her sister Oholibah saw this, and she became (B)more corrupt than her sister[a] in her lust and in her whoring, which was worse than that of her sister. 12 She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and commanders, warriors clothed in full armor, horsemen riding on horses, (C)all of them desirable young men. 13 And I saw that she was defiled; they both took the same way. 14 But she carried her whoring further. She saw men (D)portrayed on the wall, the (E)images of (F)the Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion, 15 wearing belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them having the appearance of officers, a likeness of Babylonians whose native land was Chaldea. 16 When she saw them, she lusted after them and (G)sent messengers to them (H)in Chaldea. 17 And the Babylonians came to her (I)into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoring lust. And after she was defiled by them, (J)she turned from them in disgust. 18 When she carried on her whoring so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned in disgust from her sister. 19 Yet she increased her whoring, (K)remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt 20 and lusted after her lovers there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose issue was like that of horses. 21 Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom and pressed[b] your young breasts.”
