1 1 The time of the prophecy of Amos. 3 The word of the Lord against Damascus, 6 The Philistines, Tyre, Idumea, and Ammon.
1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen at [a]Tekoa, which he saw upon Israel, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of [b]Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the [c]earthquake.
2 And he said, The Lord shall roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem, and the dwelling places of the shepherds shall perish, and the top [d]of Carmel shall wither.
3 ¶ Thus saith the Lord, For [e]three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn to it, because they have [f]threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.
4 Therefore will I send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the [g]palaces of Ben-Hadad.
5 I will break also the bars of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant of Bikeath-Aven: and him that holdeth the scepter out of Beth Eden, and the people of Aram shall go into captivity unto [h]Kir, saith the Lord.
6 Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn to it, because they [i]carried away prisoners the whole captivity to shut them up in Edom.
7 Therefore will I send a fire upon the walls of Gaza, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the scepter from Ashkelon, and turn mine hand to Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God.
9 ¶ Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn to it, because they shut the whole captivity in Edom, and have not remembered the [j]brotherly covenant.
10 Therefore will I send a fire upon the walls of Tyre, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
11 ¶ Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn to it, because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and [k]did cast off all pity, and his anger spoiled him evermore, and his wrath watched him [l][always].
12 Therefore will I send a fire upon Teman, and it shall devour the places of Bozrah.
13 ¶ Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn to it, because they [m]have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border.
14 Therefore will I kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, and with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the Lord.

Judgments on Israel’s Neighbors
1 The words of Amos, who was among the (A)sheepbreeders of (B)Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of (C)Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of (D)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the (E)earthquake.
2 And he said:
“The Lord (F)roars from Zion,
And utters His voice from Jerusalem;
The pastures of the shepherds mourn,
And the top of (G)Carmel withers.”
Judgment on the Nations
3 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (H)Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they have (I)threshed Gilead with implements of iron.
4 (J)But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
Which shall devour the palaces of (K)Ben-Hadad.
5 I will also break the gate (L)bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who [a]holds the scepter from [b]Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord.
6 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (M)Gaza, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they took captive the whole captivity
To deliver them up to Edom.
7 (N)But I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza,
Which shall devour its palaces.
8 I will cut off the inhabitant (O)from Ashdod,
And the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will (P)turn My hand against Ekron,
And (Q)the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
Says the Lord God.
9 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (R)Tyre, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom,
And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10 But I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre,
Which shall devour its palaces.”
11 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (S)Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he pursued his (T)brother with the sword,
And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever.
12 But (U)I will send a fire upon Teman,
Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”
13 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of (V)the people of Ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead,
That they might enlarge their territory.
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of (W)Rabbah,
And it shall devour its palaces,
(X)Amid shouting in the day of battle,
And a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
15 (Y)Their king shall go into captivity,
He and his princes together,”

1 Paroles d’Amos, l’un des éleveurs de Teqoa[a], qui lui furent révélées au sujet d’Israël[b], au temps d’Ozias, roi de Juda, et au temps de Jéroboam, fils de Joas, roi d’Israël, deux ans avant le tremblement de terre[c]. 2 Amos dit :
De Sion, l’Eternel rugit[d]
et, de Jérusalem, ╵il donne de la voix.
Les pâturages des bergers ╵se flétriront.
Le sommet du Carmel ╵se desséchera.
Le jugement approche
Contre les Syriens
3 L’Eternel dit ceci :
Damas[e] a perpétré ╵de nombreux crimes ;
il a dépassé les limites[f]. ╵Voilà pourquoi ╵je ne reviendrai pas ╵sur l’arrêt que j’ai pris,
car ils ont écrasé ╵sous des herses de fer ╵les gens de Galaad[g].
4 Je mettrai donc le feu ╵au palais d’Hazaël[h],
et il consumera ╵les palais du roi Ben-Hadad[i].
5 Oui, je ferai sauter ╵les verrous de Damas,
je ferai disparaître ╵celui qui siège sur le trône[j] ╵dans la vallée d’Aven
et celui qui est au pouvoir ╵à Beth-Eden[k],
et les Syriens ╵partiront en exil à Qir[l],
l’Eternel le déclare.
Contre les Philistins
6 L’Eternel dit ceci :
Gaza[m] a perpétré ╵de nombreux crimes ;
il a dépassé les limites. ╵Voilà pourquoi ╵je ne reviendrai pas ╵sur l’arrêt que j’ai pris,
car ils ont déporté ╵des gens en masse ╵pour les livrer ╵à Edom comme esclaves.
7 Je mettrai donc le feu ╵aux remparts de Gaza,
et il consumera ╵les palais qui s’y trouvent.
8 Je ferai disparaître ╵celui qui, dans Ashdod, ╵est assis sur le trône[n],
et celui qui est au pouvoir ╵à Ashkelôn.
Je me tournerai contre Eqrôn
et ainsi périront ╵les derniers Philistins[o].
Voici ce que déclare ╵le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
Contre les Phéniciens
9 L’Eternel dit ceci :
Tyr a commis ╵de nombreux crimes ;
il a dépassé les limites. ╵Voilà pourquoi ╵je ne reviendrai pas ╵sur l’arrêt que j’ai pris,
car ils ont livré à Edom ╵des déportés en masse[p],
ils n’ont fait aucun cas ╵de l’alliance[q] ╵qui les liait au peuple frère.
10 Je mettrai donc le feu ╵aux murailles de Tyr,
et il consumera ╵les palais qui s’y trouvent.
Contre les Edomites
11 L’Eternel dit ceci :
Edom a perpétré ╵de nombreux crimes ;
il a dépassé les limites. ╵Voilà pourquoi ╵je ne reviendrai pas ╵sur l’arrêt que j’ai pris,
car il a poursuivi ╵le peuple frère avec l’épée[r],
en étouffant toute pitié,
et il n’a pas cessé ╵de le meurtrir avec colère
et de nourrir sans fin ╵sa rage invétérée.
12 Je mettrai donc le feu ╵au milieu de Témân,
et il consumera ╵les palais de Botsra[s].
Contre les Ammonites
13 L’Eternel dit ceci :
Les Ammonites[t] ont perpétré ╵de nombreux crimes ;
ils ont dépassé les limites. ╵Voilà pourquoi ╵je ne reviendrai pas ╵sur l’arrêt que j’ai pris,
parce qu’ils ont ouvert le ventre
des femmes qui étaient enceintes ╵en Galaad,
en recherchant ╵à agrandir leur territoire.
14 J’incendierai ╵les remparts de Rabba[u].
Alors le feu consumera ╵les palais qui s’y trouvent,
au bruit des cris de guerre
en un jour de combat,
dans la tempête
en un jour d’ouragan.
15 Leur roi s’en ira en exil
avec tous ses ministres,
l’Eternel le déclare.

2 He said:
“The Lord roars(F) from Zion
and thunders(G) from Jerusalem;(H)
the pastures of the shepherds dry up,
and the top of Carmel(I) withers.”(J)

even for four, I will not relent.(L)
Because she threshed Gilead
with sledges having iron teeth,
4 I will send fire(M) on the house of Hazael(N)

5 I will break down the gate(Q) of Damascus;
I will destroy the king who is in[b] the Valley of Aven[c]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.(R)
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,(S)”

6 This is what the Lord says:

and sold them to Edom,(W)

that will consume her fortresses.

Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,(AE)
10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre

“For three sins of Edom,(AG)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword(AH)
and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
and his fury flamed unchecked,(AI)
12 I will send fire on Teman(AJ)
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.(AK)”
13 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Ammon,(AL)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women(AM) of Gilead
in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah(AN)
that will consume(AO) her fortresses
amid war cries(AP) on the day of battle,
amid violent winds(AQ) on a stormy day.
15 Her king[e] will go into exile,
he and his officials together,(AR)”
