The Destruction of Israel
9 I saw the Lord standing beside[a] the altar, and he said:
(A)“Strike the capitals until (B)the thresholds (C)shake,
(D)and shatter them on the heads of all the people;[b]
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
(E)not one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
2 (F)“If they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
(G)if they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
3 If they hide themselves on (H)the top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
(I)and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4 (J)And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
(K)and I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”
5 The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and (L)it melts,
and all who dwell in it mourn,
(M)and all of it rises like the Nile,
(N)and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
6 (O)who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
and founds his vault upon the earth;
(P)who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
(Q)the Lord is his name.
7 “Are you not like (R)the Cushites to me,
O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
(S)“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
and (T)the Philistines from (U)Caphtor and the Syrians from (V)Kir?
8 Behold, (W)the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
(X)except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.
9 “For behold, I will command,
(Y)and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
who say, (Z)‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’

“Strike the tops of the pillars
so that the thresholds shake.
Bring them down on the heads(A) of all the people;
those who are left I will kill with the sword.
Not one will get away,
none will escape.(B)
2 Though they dig down to the depths below,(C)
from there my hand will take them.
Though they climb up to the heavens above,(D)
from there I will bring them down.(E)
3 Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel,(F)
there I will hunt them down and seize them.(G)
Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea,(H)
there I will command the serpent(I) to bite them.(J)
4 Though they are driven into exile by their enemies,
there I will command the sword(K) to slay them.
5 The Lord, the Lord Almighty—
he touches the earth and it melts,(O)
and all who live in it mourn;
the whole land rises like the Nile,
then sinks like the river of Egypt;(P)
6 he builds his lofty palace[a](Q) in the heavens
and sets its foundation[b] on the earth;
he calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
the Lord is his name.(R)
7 “Are not you Israelites
the same to me as the Cushites[c]?”(S)
declares the Lord.
“Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt,
the Philistines(T) from Caphtor[d](U)
and the Arameans from Kir?(V)
8 “Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord
are on the sinful kingdom.
I will destroy(W) it
from the face of the earth.
Yet I will not totally destroy
the descendants of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.(X)
9 “For I will give the command,
and I will shake the people of Israel
among all the nations
as grain(Y) is shaken in a sieve,(Z)
and not a pebble will reach the ground.(AA)
10 All the sinners among my people

He Will Not Forsake His Saints

37 (A)Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not (B)envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon (C)fade like (D)the grass
and wither (E)like the green herb.
3 (F)Trust in the Lord, and do good;
(G)dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[b]
4 (H)Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will (I)give you the desires of your heart.
5 (J)Commit your way to the Lord;
(K)trust in him, and he will act.
6 (L)He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as (M)the noonday.
7 (N)Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
(O)fret not yourself over the one who (P)prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
8 (Q)Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
(R)Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 (S)For the evildoers shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall (T)inherit the land.
10 In (U)just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
though you look carefully at (V)his place, he will not be there.
11 But (W)the meek shall inherit the land
and delight themselves in (X)abundant peace.
12 The wicked (Y)plots against the righteous
and (Z)gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord (AA)laughs at the wicked,
for he sees that his (AB)day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword and (AC)bend their bows
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose (AD)way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
and their (AE)bows shall be broken.
16 (AF)Better is the little that the righteous has
than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For (AG)the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
but the Lord (AH)upholds the righteous.

(I)Be faithful (J)unto death, and I will give you (K)the crown of life. 11 (L)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. 13 “‘I know where you dwell, (P)where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not (Q)deny my faith[b] even in the days of Antipas (R)my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of (S)Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might (T)eat food sacrificed to idols and (U)practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of (V)the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, (W)I will come to you soon and (X)war against them with (Y)the sword of my mouth. 17 (Z)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (AA)To the one who conquers I will give some of (AB)the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with (AC)a new name written on the stone (AD)that no one knows except the one who receives it.’

14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:(R) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,(S) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols(T) and committed sexual immorality.(U) 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.(V) 16 Repent(W) therefore! 16 “Woe to (G)you, (H)blind guides, who say, (I)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (J)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (K)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! 23 (Q)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (R)you tithe mint and dill and (S)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (T)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (U)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (V)a camel!
25 (W)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (X)you clean the outside of (Y)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (Z)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (AA)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(A) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(B) [14] [a]
15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(C) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(D) as you are.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(E) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(F) 17 You blind fools!
