⁹ “The patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him^(A)

² The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; he was in the house of his Egyptian master.^(A)

⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me.” And they came closer. He said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.^(A)

²¹ But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love; he gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.^{(A) 22} The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s care all the prisoners who were in the prison, and whatever was done there, he was the one who did it.^{(B) 23} The chief jailer paid no heed to anything that was in Joseph’s care because the Lord was with him, and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.^(C)

⁴ But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.^(A)

⁵ Once Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. ⁶ He said to them, “Listen to this dream that I dreamed. ⁷ There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright; then your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.”^{(B) 8} His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words.^(C)

⁹ He had another dream and told it to his brothers, saying, “Look, I have had another dream: the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” ¹⁰ But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What kind of dream is this that you have had? Shall we indeed come, I and your mother and your brothers, and bow to the ground before you?”^{(D) 11} So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.^(E)

¹⁸ For he realized that it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over.

Joseph Forgives His Brothers

¹⁵ Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, “What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?”^{(A) 16} So they approached^[a] Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this instruction before he died, ¹⁷ ‘Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.’ Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. ¹⁸ Then his brothers also wept,^[b] fell down before him, and said, “We are here as your slaves.”^{(B) 19} But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God?^{(C) 20} Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today.^(D)
