Imprisoned Apostles Freed

17 (A)Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with [a]indignation, 18 (B)and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night (C)an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people (D)all the words of this life.”

21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. (E)But the high priest and those with him came and called the [b]council together, with all the [c]elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

Apostles on Trial Again

22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing [d]outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” 24 Now when [e]the high priest, (F)the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 25 So one came and told them, [f]saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, (G)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, (H)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, (I)and intend to bring this Man’s (J)blood on us!”

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: (K)“We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 (L)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by (M)hanging on a tree. 31 (N)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be (O)Prince and (P)Savior, (Q)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And (R)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit (S)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Advice

33 When they heard this, they were (T)furious[g] and plotted to kill them. 34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named (U)Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, [h]take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, [i]joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 (V)but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found (W)to fight against God.”

40 And they agreed with him, and when they had (X)called for the apostles (Y)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, (Z)rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for [j]His name.

17 And having risen, the chief priest, and all those with him -- being the sect of the Sadducees -- were filled with zeal,

18 and laid their hands upon the apostles, and did put them in a public prison;

19 and a messenger of the Lord through the night opened the doors of the prison, having also brought them forth, he said,

20 `Go on, and standing, speak in the temple to the people all the sayings of this life;'

21 and having heard, they did enter at the dawn into the temple, and were teaching. And the chief priest having come, and those with him, they called together the sanhedrim and all the senate of the sons of Israel, and they sent to the prison to have them brought,

22 and the officers having come, did not find them in the prison, and having turned back, they told,

23 saying -- `The prison indeed we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors, and having opened -- within we found no one.'

24 And as the priest, and the magistrate of the temple, and the chief priests, heard these words, they were doubting concerning them to what this would come;

25 and coming near, a certain one told them, saying -- `Lo, the men whom ye did put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people;'

26 then the magistrate having gone away with officers, brought them without violence, for they were fearing the people, lest they should be stoned;

27 and having brought them, they set [them] in the sanhedrim, and the chief priest questioned them,

28 saying, `Did not we strictly command you not to teach in this name? and lo, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and ye intend to bring upon us the blood of this man.'

29 And Peter and the apostles answering, said, `To obey God it behoveth, rather than men;

30 and the God of our fathers did raise up Jesus, whom ye slew, having hanged upon a tree;

31 this one God, a Prince and a Saviour, hath exalted with His right hand, to give reformation to Israel, and forgiveness of sins;

32 and we are His witnesses of these sayings, and the Holy Spirit also, whom God gave to those obeying him.'

33 And they having heard, were cut [to the heart], and were taking counsel to slay them,

34 but a certain one, having risen up in the sanhedrim -- a Pharisee, by name Gamaliel, a teacher of law honoured by all the people -- commanded to put the apostles forth a little,

35 and said unto them, `Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves about these men, what ye are about to do,

36 for before these days rose up Theudas, saying, that himself was some one, to whom a number of men did join themselves, as it were four hundred, who was slain, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered, and came to nought.

37 `After this one rose up, Judas the Galilean, in the days of the enrollment, and drew away much people after him, and that one perished, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered;

38 and now I say to you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone, because if this counsel or this work may be of men, it will be overthrown,

39 and if it be of God, ye are not able to overthrow it, lest perhaps also ye be found fighting against God.'

40 And to him they agreed, and having called near the apostles, having beaten [them], they commanded [them] not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go;

41 they, indeed, then, departed from the presence of the sanhedrim, rejoicing that for his name they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour,

Imprisonment and Release

17 But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is (A)the sect of (B)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. 18 They laid hands on the apostles and (C)put them in a public prison. 19 But during the night (D)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said, 20 “Go, stand and [a]speak to the people in the temple area [b](E)the whole message of this Life.” 21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area (F)about daybreak and began to teach.

Now when (G)the high priest and his associates came, they called (H)the [c]Council together, that is, all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison for them to be brought. 22 But (I)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported, 23 saying, “We found the prison locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (J)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what [d]would come of this. 25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!” 26 Then (K)the captain went along with (L)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for (M)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

27 When they had brought them, they had them stand [e]before (N)the Council. The high priest interrogated them, 28 saying, “We gave you (O)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and [f]yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and (P)intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “(Q)We must obey God rather than men. 30 (R)The God of our fathers (S)raised up Jesus, whom you (T)put to death by hanging Him on [g](U)a cross. 31 (V)He is the one whom God exalted [h]to His right hand as a [i](W)Prince and a (X)Savior, to grant (Y)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are (Z)witnesses [j]of these things; and (AA)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

33 But when they heard this, they became (AB)infuriated and nearly decided to execute them. 34 But a Pharisee named (AC)Gamaliel, a (AD)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in (AE)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men. 36 For, some time ago Theudas appeared, (AF)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. [k]But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of (AG)the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered. 38 And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or [l]movement (AH)is men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found (AI)fighting against God.”

40 They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they (AJ)flogged them and ordered them not to [m]speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. 41 So they went on their way from the presence of the [n](AK)Council, (AL)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame (AM)for His name.
