Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, (A)since it is only the third hour of the day.[a] 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 (B)“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
(C)that I will pour out my Spirit (D)on all flesh,
and your sons and (E)your daughters shall prophesy,
    and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and (F)they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 (G)the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
    before (H)the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that (I)everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, (J)a man attested to you by God (K)with (L)mighty works and wonders and signs that (M)God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus,[b] (N)delivered up according to (O)the definite plan and (P)foreknowledge of God, (Q)you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 (R)God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because (S)it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

(T)“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
    my flesh also will dwell (U)in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to (V)Hades,
    (W)or let your (X)Holy One (Y)see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about (Z)the patriarch David (AA)that he both died and (AB)was buried, and (AC)his tomb is with us to this day. 30 (AD)Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that (AE)God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that (AF)he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus (AG)God raised up, (AH)and of that we all are witnesses. 33 (AI)Being therefore (AJ)exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from (AK)the Father (AL)the promise of the Holy Spirit, (AM)he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For (AN)David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

(AO)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35     until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that (AP)God has made him (AQ)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus (AR)whom you crucified.”

Peter’s Sermon

14 But Peter, taking his stand with (A)the other eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, [a]know this, and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you assume, (B)since it is only the [b]third hour of the day; 16 but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 (C)And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
That I will pour out My Spirit on all [c]mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
And your young men will see visions,
And your old men will [d]have dreams;
18 And even on My male and female [e]servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
And they will prophesy.
19 And I will [f]display wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, fire, and [g]vapor of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And it shall be that (D)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: (E)Jesus the Nazarene, (F)a Man [h]attested to you by God with [i]miracles and (G)wonders and [j]signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the (H)predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, (I)you nailed to a cross by the hands of [k]godless men and put Him to death. 24 [l]But (J)God raised Him from the dead, putting an end to the [m]agony of death, since it (K)was impossible for Him to be held [n]in its power. 25 For David says of Him,

(L)I saw the Lord continually before me,
Because He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue was overjoyed;
Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;
27 For You will not abandon my soul to (M)Hades,
(N)Nor will You [o]allow Your [p]Holy One to [q]undergo decay.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’

29 [r]Brothers, I may confidently say to you regarding the (O)patriarch David that he both (P)died and (Q)was buried, and (R)his tomb is [s]with us to this day. 30 So because he was (S)a prophet and knew that (T)God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one [t]of his descendants on his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the [u]Christ, that (U)He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh [v]suffer decay. 32 It is this Jesus whom (V)God raised up, [w]a fact to which we are all (W)witnesses. 33 Therefore, [x]since He has been exalted [y](X)at the right hand of God, and (Y)has received (Z)the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has (AA)poured out this which you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into [z]heaven, but he himself says:

(AB)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

36 Therefore let all the (AC)house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both (AD)Lord and [aa]Christ—this Jesus (AE)whom you crucified.”
