²⁴ Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.^(A)

⁴ The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.^(A)

⁴ Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas,^(A) as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

⁵ But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city.^(B) They rushed to Jason’s^(C) house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.^[a]

⁸ Paul entered the synagogue^(A) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.^{(B) 9} But some of them^(C) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.^(D) So Paul left them. He took the disciples^(E) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

³ What if some were unfaithful?^(A) Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?^(B)

⁶ But when they opposed Paul and became abusive,^(A) he shook out his clothes in protest^(B) and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads!^(C) I am innocent of it.^(D) From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”^(E)

⁷ Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God.^{(F) 8} Crispus,^(G) the synagogue leader,^(H) and his entire household^(I) believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

⁴ And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”^{[a](A) 5} So too, at the present time there is a remnant^(B) chosen by grace.^{(C) 6} And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;^(D) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

⁴⁸ When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;^(A) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

⁴⁹ The word of the Lord^(B) spread through the whole region. ⁵⁰ But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.^(C)
