The Jews accuse Paul before Festus. Paul appeals to the Emperor and is sent to Rome.
25 When Festus had arrived in the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem. 2 Then the high priests and the chief men of the Jews made submissions to him about Paul. And they entreated him, 3 and requested his indulgence concerning Paul, that he would send for him to come to Jerusalem. And they planned to lay wait for him along the way, to kill him.
4 But Festus answered that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, but that he himself would shortly go there. 5 Therefore (said he), let those among you who are able to do it come down with us, and bring your case against him there, if there be any fault in the man.
6 When he had been in Jerusalem more than ten days, Festus departed to Caesarea. And the next day, he sat down in the judgment seat and commanded Paul to be brought. 7 When he appeared, the Jews that had come from Jerusalem came about him and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul – which they could not prove, 8 as long as he answered for himself that he had not offended against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, in anything at all.
9 Festus, wanting to please the Jews, answered Paul and said, Will you go to Jerusalem and be judged there before me concerning these things? 10 Then Paul said, I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged. To the Jews I have done no harm, as you very well know. 11 If I have hurt them, or committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die. If none of these things are so, of which they accuse me, no one ought to deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar!
12 Then Festus spoke with deliberation and answered, You have appealed to Caesar: to Caesar you shall go.
13 After some days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice came to Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus. 14 And when they had been there a good season, Festus described Paul’s case to the king, saying, There is a certain man left in prison by Felix, 15 against whom the high priests and elders of the Jews informed me when I went to Jerusalem, and asked to have judgment against him. 16 To whom I answered, It is not the practice of the Romans to deliver any man to die before he has his accusers before him, and has the opportunity to answer for himself concerning the charge made against him. 17 When they came here, without delay I sat the next day to give judgment and commanded the man to be brought forth.
18 When the accusers stood up, they brought no accusation against him of such things as I supposed, 19 but had certain questions against him concerning their own superstition, and about one Jesus who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. 20 And because I was uncertain of such questions, I asked him if he would go to Jerusalem and be judged there concerning these matters. 21 Then, when Paul appealed to be held for hearing by Caesar, I commanded him to be kept till I could send him to Caesar.
22 Agrippa said to Festus, I would also like to hear the man myself.
Tomorrow (said he) you shall hear him.
23 And the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and had entered into the council house with the high captains and chief men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth. 24 And Festus said, King Agrippa, and everyone here present with us, you see this man, about whom all the Jews have been calling upon me, both at Jerusalem and also here, complaining that he ought not to live any longer. 25 Yet I found nothing worthy of death committed by him. Nevertheless, seeing that he has appealed to Caesar, I have determined to send him. 26 But I have nothing certain to write to my lord about him. Therefore I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after examination I might have something to write. 27 For it seems to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not to specify the complaints that are laid against him.

Paul Appeals to Caesar
25 Now three days after Festus had arrived in (A)the province, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. 2 And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews (B)laid out their case against Paul, and they urged him, 3 asking as a favor against Paul[a] that he summon him to Jerusalem—because (C)they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way. 4 Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea and that he himself intended to go there shortly. 5 “So,” said he, “let the men of authority among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, let them bring charges against him.”
6 After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day he took his seat on (D)the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought. 7 When he had arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges against him (E)that they could not prove. 8 Paul argued in his defense, “Neither (F)against (G)the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor (H)against Caesar have I committed any offense.” 9 But Festus, (I)wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried on these charges before me?” 10 But Paul said, “I am standing before Caesar's (J)tribunal, where I ought to be tried. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you yourself know very well. 11 If then I am a wrongdoer and have committed anything for which I deserve to die, I do not seek to escape death. But if there is nothing to their charges against me, no one can give me up to them. (K)I appeal to Caesar.” 12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with his council, answered, “To Caesar you have appealed; to Caesar you shall go.”
Paul Before Agrippa and Bernice
13 Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus. 14 And as they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, (L)“There is a man left prisoner by Felix, 15 and when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid out their case (M)against him, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him. 16 (N)I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone (O)before the accused met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him. 17 (P)So when they came together here, I made no delay, but on the next day took my seat on (Q)the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought. 18 When the accusers stood up, they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed. 19 Rather they (R)had certain points of dispute with him about their own religion and about (S)a certain Jesus, who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive. 20 Being at a loss how to investigate these questions, I (T)asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regarding them. 21 But (U)when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of (V)the emperor, I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.” 22 Then (W)Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear the man myself.” “Tomorrow,” said he, “you will hear him.”
23 So on the next day (X)Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city. Then, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in. 24 And Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom (Y)the whole Jewish people petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, (Z)shouting that he ought not to live any longer. 25 But I found that (AA)he had done nothing deserving death. And (AB)as he himself appealed to (AC)the emperor, I decided to go ahead and send him. 26 But I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him. Therefore I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that, after we have examined him, I may have something to write. 27 For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to indicate the charges against him.”

25 Llegado, pues, Festo a la provincia, subió de Cesarea a Jerusalén tres días después.
2 Y los principales sacerdotes y los más influyentes de los judíos se presentaron ante él contra Pablo, y le rogaron,
3 pidiendo contra él, como un favor, que le hiciese traer a Jerusalén; preparando ellos una emboscada para matarle en el camino.
4 Pero Festo respondió que Pablo estaba custodiado en Cesarea, adonde él mismo partiría en breve.
5 Los que de vosotros puedan, dijo, desciendan conmigo, y si hay algún crimen en este hombre, acúsenle.
6 Y deteniéndose entre ellos no más de ocho o diez días, vino a Cesarea, y al día siguiente se sentó en el tribunal, y mandó que fuese traído Pablo.
7 Cuando éste llegó, lo rodearon los judíos que habían descendido de Jerusalén, presentando contra él muchas y graves acusaciones, las cuales no podían probar;
8 alegando Pablo en su defensa: Ni contra la ley de los judíos, ni contra el templo, ni contra César he pecado en nada.
9 Pero Festo, queriendo congraciarse con los judíos, respondiendo a Pablo dijo: ¿Quieres subir a Jerusalén, y allá ser juzgado de estas cosas delante de mí?
10 Pablo dijo: Ante el tribunal de César estoy, donde debo ser juzgado. A los judíos no les he hecho ningún agravio, como tú sabes muy bien.
11 Porque si he hecho algún agravio, o cosa alguna digna de muerte, no rehúso morir; pero si nada hay de las cosas de que éstos me acusan, nadie puede entregarme a ellos. A César apelo.
12 Entonces Festo, habiendo hablado con el consejo, respondió: A César has apelado; a César irás.

13 Pasados algunos días, el rey Agripa y Berenice vinieron a Cesarea para saludar a Festo.
14 Y como pasaban allí muchos días, Festo expuso al rey la causa de Pablo, diciendo: Un hombre ha sido dejado preso por Félix,
15 respecto al cual, cuando fui a Jerusalén, se me presentaron los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos de los judíos, pidiendo sentencia de condenación contra él.
16 Les respondí que no es costumbre de los romanos entregar alguno a la muerte antes que el acusado tenga delante a sus acusadores, y tenga la oportunidad de defenderse de los cargos.
17 Así que, después que ellos se reunieron aquí, sin ninguna dilación, al día siguiente, me senté en el tribunal y mandé traer al hombre.
18 Y cuando sus acusadores comparecieron, ningún cargo presentaron de los que yo sospechaba,
19 sino que tenían contra él ciertas cuestiones acerca de su propia religión, y de un cierto Jesús, ya muerto, del que Pablo afirmaba que está vivo.
20 Yo no sabía qué camino tomar para investigar tal caso, y le pregunté si quería ir a Jerusalén y ser juzgado allí de estas cosas.
21 Mas como Pablo apeló que se le reservase para la decisión del Augusto, mandé que le custodiasen hasta que yo le envíe a César.
22 Entonces Agripa dijo a Festo: Yo también querría oír a ese hombre. Y él le dijo: Mañana le oirás.
23 Al otro día, viniendo Agripa y Berenice con mucha pompa, y entrando en la audiencia con los tribunos y los hombres más importantes de la ciudad, por mandato de Festo fue traído Pablo.
24 Entonces Festo dijo: Rey Agripa, y todos los varones que estáis aquí juntos con nosotros, aquí tenéis a este hombre, respecto del cual toda la multitud de los judíos me ha demandado en Jerusalén y aquí, gritando que no debe vivir más.
25 Pero yo, hallando que no ha hecho ninguna cosa digna de muerte, y como él mismo apeló al Augusto, he determinado enviarle a él.
26 Como no tengo nada en concreto que escribir a mi señor sobre él, le he traído ante vosotros, y sobre todo ante ti, oh rey Agripa, para que después de examinarle, tenga yo qué escribir.
27 Porque me parece fuera de razón enviar un preso, y no indicar los cargos que haya en su contra.

Paul’s Trial Before Festus
25 Three days after arriving in the province, Festus(A) went up from Caesarea(B) to Jerusalem, 2 where the chief priests and the Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul.(C) 3 They requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.(D) 4 Festus answered, “Paul is being held(E) at Caesarea,(F) and I myself am going there soon. 5 Let some of your leaders come with me, and if the man has done anything wrong, they can press charges against him there.”
6 After spending eight or ten days with them, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he convened the court(G) and ordered that Paul be brought before him.(H) 7 When Paul came in, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him. They brought many serious charges against him,(I) but they could not prove them.(J)
8 Then Paul made his defense: “I have done nothing wrong against the Jewish law or against the temple(K) or against Caesar.”
9 Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor,(L) said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?”(M)
10 Paul answered: “I am now standing before Caesar’s court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews,(N) as you yourself know very well. 11 If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”(O)
12 After Festus had conferred with his council, he declared: “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you will go!”
Festus Consults King Agrippa
13 A few days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea(P) to pay their respects to Festus. 14 Since they were spending many days there, Festus discussed Paul’s case with the king. He said: “There is a man here whom Felix left as a prisoner.(Q) 15 When I went to Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him(R) and asked that he be condemned.
16 “I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over anyone before they have faced their accusers and have had an opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.(S) 17 When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.(T) 18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected. 19 Instead, they had some points of dispute(U) with him about their own religion(V) and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive. 20 I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.(W) 21 But when Paul made his appeal to be held over for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”(X)
22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man myself.”
He replied, “Tomorrow you will hear him.”(Y)

23 The next day Agrippa and Bernice(AA) came with great pomp and entered the audience room with the high-ranking military officers and the prominent men of the city. At the command of Festus, Paul was brought in. 24 Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all who are present with us, you see this man! The whole Jewish community(AB) has petitioned me about him in Jerusalem and here in Caesarea, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.(AC) 25 I found he had done nothing deserving of death,(AD) but because he made his appeal to the Emperor(AE) I decided to send him to Rome. 26 But I have nothing definite to write to His Majesty about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that as a result of this investigation I may have something to write. 27 For I think it is unreasonable to send a prisoner on to Rome without specifying the charges against him.”
