⁹ The other Jews joined in the accusation,^(A) asserting that these things were true.

¹⁶ in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles^(A) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.^(B) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.^[a]

¹¹ Then they secretly^(A) persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”^(B)

¹² So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.^{(C) 13} They produced false witnesses,^(D) who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place^(E) and against the law.

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.^(B) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.^(C)

⁵⁹ The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin^(A) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰ But they did not find any, though many false witnesses^(B) came forward.

Finally two^(C) came forward

²⁷ Her officials^(A) within her are like wolves^(B) tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people^(C) to make unjust gain.^{(D) 28} Her prophets whitewash^(E) these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations.^(F) They say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says’—when the Lord has not spoken.^{(G) 29} The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery;^(H) they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner,^(I) denying them justice.^(J)
