Paul and Silas in Thessalonica
17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (A)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And Paul went in, (B)as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them (C)from the Scriptures, 3 (D)explaining and proving that it was necessary for (E)the Christ to suffer and (F)to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” 4 And (G)some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did (H)a great many of the devout (I)Greeks and not a few of the leading women. 5 (J)But the Jews[a] (K)were jealous, and taking (L)some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. 6 And when they could not find them, (M)they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, 7 and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against (N)the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is (O)another king, Jesus.” 8 And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. 9 And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 (P)The brothers[b] immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they (Q)went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, (R)examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 (S)Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek (T)women of high standing as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, (U)agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then the brothers (V)immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and (W)Timothy remained there. 15 (X)Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as (Y)Athens, and after receiving a command (Z)for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was (AA)provoked within him as he saw that the city was (AB)full of idols. 17 So (AC)he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, (AD)“What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because (AE)he was preaching (AF)Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to (AG)the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this (AH)new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some (AI)strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.

22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: (AJ)‘To the unknown god.’ (AK)What therefore you worship (AL)as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 (AM)The God who made the world and everything in it, being (AN)Lord of heaven and earth, (AO)does not live in temples made by man,[c] 25 nor is he served by human hands, (AP)as though he needed anything, since he himself (AQ)gives to all mankind (AR)life and breath and everything. 26 And (AS)he made from one man every nation of mankind to live (AT)on all the face of the earth, (AU)having determined allotted periods and (AV)the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 (AW)that they should seek God, (AX)and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. (AY)Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for
as even some of (BA)your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’[e]
29 (BB)Being then God's offspring, (BC)we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 (BD)The times of ignorance (BE)God overlooked, but (BF)now he (BG)commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed (BH)a day on which (BI)he will judge the world (BJ)in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and (BK)of this he has given assurance to all (BL)by raising him from the dead.”
32 Now when they heard of (BM)the resurrection of the dead, (BN)some mocked. But others said, (BO)“We will hear you again about this.” 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius (BP)the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

17 Pavel şi Sila au trecut prin Amfipoli şi Apolonia şi au venit în Tesalonic, unde era o sinagogă a iudeilor. 2 Pavel, după obiceiul său, a(A) intrat în sinagogă. Trei zile de Sabat a vorbit cu ei din Scripturi, 3 dovedind şi lămurind că(B) Hristosul trebuia să pătimească şi să învieze din morţi. „Şi acest Isus, pe care vi-L vestesc eu”, zicea el, „este Hristosul”. 4 Unii(C) din ei şi o mare mulţime de greci temători de Dumnezeu şi multe femei de frunte au crezut şi au trecut de partea lui Pavel şi a lui Sila(D). 5 Dar iudeii care nu crezuseră, de pizmă, au luat cu ei nişte oameni fără căpătâi din mulţime, au făcut gloată şi au întărâtat cetatea. S-au năpustit asupra casei lui Iason şi căutau pe Pavel şi pe Sila ca să-i aducă afară, la norod. 6 Fiindcă nu i-au găsit, au târât pe Iason(E) şi pe vreo câţiva fraţi înaintea dregătorilor cetăţii şi strigau: „Oamenii aceştia(F) care au răscolit lumea au venit şi aici, 7 şi Iason i-a găzduit. Ei toţi lucrează împotriva poruncilor cezarului şi spun(G) că este un alt Împărat: Isus.” 8 Prin aceste vorbe, iudeii au tulburat norodul şi pe dregătorii cetăţii, 9 care au dat drumul lui Iason şi celorlalţi numai după ce au căpătat de la ei un zălog.

10 Fraţii(H) au trimis îndată, noaptea, pe Pavel şi pe Sila la Bereea. Când au sosit, au intrat în sinagoga iudeilor. 11 Iudeii aceştia aveau o inimă mai aleasă decât cei din Tesalonic. Au primit Cuvântul cu toată râvna şi cercetau(I) Scripturile în fiecare zi, ca să vadă dacă ce li se spunea este aşa. 12 Mulţi dintre ei şi din femeile cu vază ale grecilor şi mulţi bărbaţi au crezut. 13 Dar iudeii din Tesalonic, când au aflat că Pavel vestea Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu şi în Bereea, au venit acolo, ca să tulbure şi să aţâţe noroadele. 14 Atunci, fraţii au pornit îndată(J) pe Pavel spre mare; Sila şi Timotei au rămas în Bereea.

15 Cei ce însoţeau pe Pavel l-au dus până la Atena. Apoi s-au întors cu însărcinarea(K) să ducă lui Sila şi lui Timotei porunca să vină cât mai curând la el. 16 Pe când îi aştepta Pavel în Atena, i se(L) întărâta duhul la vederea acestei cetăţi pline de idoli. 17 În sinagogă stătea deci de vorbă cu iudeii şi cu oamenii temători de Dumnezeu, iar în piaţă stătea de vorbă în fiecare zi cu aceia pe care-i întâlnea. 18 Unii din filosofii epicurieni şi stoici au intrat în vorbă cu el. Şi unii ziceau: „Ce vrea să spună palavragiul acesta?” Alţii, când l-au auzit că vesteşte pe Isus şi învierea, ziceau: „Pare că vesteşte nişte dumnezei străini”. 19 Atunci, l-au luat, l-au dus la Areopag şi au zis: „Putem să ştim care este această învăţătură nouă pe care o vesteşti tu? 20 Fiindcă tu ne aduci ceva ciudat la auz. Am vrea dar să ştim ce vrea să zică aceasta.” 21 Căci toţi atenienii şi străinii care stăteau în Atena nu-şi petreceau vremea cu nimic altceva decât să spună sau să asculte ceva nou. 22 Pavel a stat în picioare în mijlocul Areopagului şi a zis: „Bărbaţi atenieni! În toate privinţele vă găsesc foarte religioşi. 23 Căci, pe când străbăteam cetatea voastră şi mă uitam de aproape la lucrurile la care vă închinaţi voi, am descoperit chiar şi un altar pe care este scris: ‘Unui Dumnezeu necunoscut!’ Ei bine, ceea ce voi cinstiţi, fără să cunoaşteţi, aceea vă vestesc eu. 24 Dumnezeu(M) care a făcut lumea şi tot ce este în ea este Domnul(N) cerului şi al pământului şi nu(O) locuieşte în temple făcute de mâini. 25 El nu este slujit de mâini omeneşti, ca(P) şi când ar avea trebuinţă de ceva, El(Q), care dă tuturor viaţa, suflarea şi toate lucrurile. 26 El a făcut ca toţi oamenii, ieşiţi dintr-unul singur, să locuiască pe toată faţa pământului; le-a aşezat anumite vremuri şi a pus anumite hotare(R) locuinţei lor, 27 ca(S) ei să caute pe Dumnezeu şi să se silească să-L găsească bâjbâind, măcar(T) că nu este departe de fiecare din noi. 28 Căci în(U) El avem viaţa, mişcarea şi fiinţa, după cum(V) au zis şi unii din poeţii voştri: ‘Suntem din neamul Lui’… 29 Astfel dar, fiindcă suntem de neam din Dumnezeu, nu(W) trebuie să credem că Dumnezeirea este asemenea aurului sau argintului, sau pietrei cioplite cu meşteşugirea şi iscusinţa omului. 30 Dumnezeu nu ţine seama de vremurile(X) de neştiinţă şi porunceşte, acum(Y), tuturor oamenilor de pretutindeni să se pocăiască, 31 pentru că a rânduit o zi în care va(Z) judeca lumea după dreptate, prin Omul pe care L-a rânduit pentru aceasta şi despre care a dat tuturor oamenilor o dovadă netăgăduită prin(AA) faptul că L-a înviat din morţi…” 32 Când au auzit ei de învierea morţilor, unii îşi băteau joc, iar alţii au zis: „Asupra acestor lucruri te vom asculta altădată”. 33 Astfel, Pavel a ieşit din mijlocul lor. 34 Totuşi unii au trecut de partea lui şi au crezut; între aceştia erau Dionisie Areopagitul, o femeie numită Damaris şi alţii împreună cu ei.

17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three [a]sabbath days reasoned with them from the scriptures, 3 opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, said he, I proclaim unto you, is the Christ. 4 And some of them were persuaded, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. 5 But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people. 6 And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned [b]the world upside down are come hither also; 7 whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. 8 And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. 9 And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the scriptures daily, whether these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and of men, not a few. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes. 14 And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still. 15 But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with them that met him. 18 And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him.
