Paul Refuses to Depart Secretly
35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the [a]officers, saying, “Let those men go.”
36 So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”
37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned (A)Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”
38 And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. 39 Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and (B)asked them to depart from the city. 40 So they went out of the prison (C)and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
Preaching Christ at Thessalonica
17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (D)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, (E)went in to them, and for three Sabbaths (F)reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating (G)that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 (H)And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and (I)Silas.
Assault on Jason’s House
5 But the Jews [b]who were not persuaded, [c]becoming (J)envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of (K)Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, (L)“These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. 7 Jason has [d]harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, (M)saying there is another king—Jesus.” 8 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. 9 So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Ministering at Berea
10 Then (N)the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more [e]fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and (O)searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds. 14 (P)Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and (Q)receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.

5 ζηλωσαντες δε οι απειθουντες ιουδαιοι και προσλαβομενοι των αγοραιων τινας ανδρας πονηρους και οχλοποιησαντες εθορυβουν την πολιν επισταντες τε τη οικια ιασονος εζητουν αυτους αγαγειν εις τον δημον
6 μη ευροντες δε αυτους εσυρον τον ιασονα και τινας αδελφους επι τους πολιταρχας βοωντες οτι οι την οικουμενην αναστατωσαντες ουτοι και ενθαδε παρεισιν
7 ους υποδεδεκται ιασων και ουτοι παντες απεναντι των δογματων καισαρος πραττουσιν βασιλεα λεγοντες ετερον ειναι ιησουν
8 εταραξαν δε τον οχλον και τους πολιταρχας ακουοντας ταυτα

35 And day having come, the magistrates sent the rod-bearers, saying, `Let those men go;'
36 and the jailor told these words unto Paul -- `The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;'
37 and Paul said to them, `Having beaten us publicly uncondemned -- men, Romans being -- they did cast [us] to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.'
38 And the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,
39 and having come, they besought them, and having brought [them] forth, they were asking [them] to go forth from the city;
40 and they, having gone forth out of the prison, entered into [the house of] Lydia, and having seen the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.
17 And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,
2 and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,
3 opening and alleging, `That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ -- Jesus whom I proclaim to you.'
4 And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.
5 And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace,
6 and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud -- `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,
7 whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king -- Jesus.'
8 And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,
9 and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
10 And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;
11 and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;
12 many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.
13 And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;
14 and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.
15 And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;

35 Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their officers, saying, “Release those men.” 36 And (A)the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The chief magistrates have sent word that you be released. So come out now and go (B)in peace.” 37 But Paul said to them, “After beating us in public without due process—(C)men who are Romans—they threw us into prison; and now they are releasing us secretly? No indeed! On the contrary, let them come [a]in person and lead us out.” 38 The officers reported these words to the chief magistrates. (D)And they became fearful when they heard that they were Romans, 39 and they came and pleaded with them, and when they had led them out, they repeatedly asked them (E)to leave the city. 40 They left the prison and entered the house of (F)Lydia, and when they saw (G)the brothers and sisters, they [b]encouraged them and departed.
Paul in Thessalonica
17 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (H)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And (I)according to Paul’s custom, he [c]visited them, and for three (J)Sabbaths reasoned with them from (K)the Scriptures, 3 [d]explaining and [e]giving evidence that the [f]Christ (L)had to suffer and (M)rise from the dead, and saying, “(N)This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the [g]Christ.” 4 (O)And some of them were persuaded and joined (P)Paul and Silas, [h]along with a large number of the (Q)God-fearing (R)Greeks and [i]a significant number of the (S)leading women. 5 But (T)the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and they attacked the house of (U)Jason and were seeking to bring them out to the people. 6 When they did not find them, they began (V)dragging Jason and some brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have upset [j](W)the world have come here also; 7 [k]and Jason (X)has welcomed them, and they all act (Y)contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” 8 They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. 9 And when they had received a [l]pledge from (Z)Jason and the others, they released them.
Paul in Berea
10 (AA)The brothers immediately sent (AB)Paul and Silas away by night to (AC)Berea, [m]and when they arrived, they went into (AD)the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these people were more noble-minded than those in (AE)Thessalonica, [n]for they received the word with [o]great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore, (AF)many of them believed, [p]along with a significant number of (AG)prominent Greek (AH)women and men. 13 But when the Jews of (AI)Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in (AJ)Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then immediately (AK)the brothers sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and (AL)Silas and (AM)Timothy remained there. 15 Now (AN)those who escorted Paul brought him as far as (AO)Athens; and receiving a command for (AP)Silas and Timothy to (AQ)come to him as soon as possible, they left.
