The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, (A)the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 (B)And [a]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, (C)because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit (D)just as we have? 48 (E)And he commanded them to be baptized (F)in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Peter Defends God’s Grace

11 Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, (G)those of the circumcision contended with him, saying, (H)“You went in to uncircumcised men (I)and ate with them!”

But Peter explained it to them (J)in order from the beginning, saying: (K)“I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me. When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ 10 Now this was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11 At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 Then (L)the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover (M)these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 (N)And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, 14 who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, (O)as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, (P)‘John indeed baptized with water, but (Q)you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 (R)If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, (S)who was I that I could withstand God?”

18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, (T)“Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”

44 While Peter is yet speaking these sayings, the Holy spirit fell upon all those hearing the word,

45 and those of the circumcision believing were astonished -- as many as came with Peter -- because also upon the nations the gift of the Holy Spirit hath been poured out,

46 for they were hearing them speaking with tongues and magnifying God.

47 Then answered Peter, `The water is any one able to forbid, that these may not be baptized, who the Holy Spirit did receive -- even as also we?'

48 he commanded them also to be baptized in the name of the Lord; then they besought him to remain certain days.

11 And the apostles and the brethren who are in Judea heard that also the nations did receive the word of God,

and when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision were contending with him,

saying -- `Unto men uncircumcised thou didst go in, and didst eat with them!'

And Peter having begun, did expound to them in order saying,

`I was in the city of Joppa praying, and I saw in a trance a vision, a certain vessel coming down, as a great sheet by four corners being let down out of the heaven, and it came unto me;

at which having looked stedfastly, I was considering, and I saw the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of heaven;

and I heard a voice saying to me, Having risen, Peter, slay and eat;

and I said, Not so, Lord; because anything common or unclean hath at no time entered into my mouth;

and a voice did answer me a second time out of the heaven, What God did cleanse, thou -- declare not thou common.

10 `And this happened thrice, and again was all drawn up to the heaven,

11 and, lo, immediately, three men stood at the house in which I was, having been sent from Cesarea unto me,

12 and the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting, and these six brethren also went with me, and we did enter into the house of the man,

13 he declared also to us how he saw the messenger in his house standing, and saying to him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter,

14 who shall speak sayings by which thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house.

15 `And in my beginning to speak, the Holy Spirit did fall upon them, even as also upon us in the beginning,

16 and I remembered the saying of the Lord, how he said, John indeed did baptize with water, and ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit;

17 if then the equal gift God did give to them as also to us, having believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ, I -- how was I able to withstand God?'

18 And they, having heard these things, were silent, and were glorifying God, saying, `Then, indeed, also to the nations did God give the reformation to life.'

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, (A)the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the [a]message. 45 (B)All the [b]Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been (C)poured out on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them (D)speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter responded, 47 (E)Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized, who (F)have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he (G)ordered them to be baptized (H)in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

Peter Reports in Jerusalem

11 Now the apostles and (I)the brothers and sisters who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, [c](J)the Jewish believers took issue with him, saying, “(K)You [d]went to [e]uncircumcised men and ate with them.” But Peter began and explained at length to them (L)in an orderly sequence, saying, (M)I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw (N)a vision, an [f]object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came to where I was, and I stared at it and was thinking about it, and I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild animals, the [g]crawling creatures, and the birds of the sky. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; [h]kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord, for nothing [i]unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But a voice from heaven answered a second time, ‘(O)What God has cleansed, no longer [j]consider unholy.’ 10 This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky. 11 And behold, at that moment three men who had been sent to me from (P)Caesarea came up to the house where we were staying. 12 (Q)And the Spirit told me to go with them (R)without [k]misgivings. (S)These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 And he reported to us how he had seen the angel [l]standing in his house, and saying, ‘Send some men to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here; 14 and he will speak (T)words to you by which you will be saved, you and (U)all your household.’ 15 And as I began to speak, (V)the Holy Spirit fell upon them just (W)as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, (X)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [m]with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 Therefore, if (Y)God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, (Z)who was I that I could [n]stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard this, they [o]quieted down and (AA)glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the (AB)repentance that leads to life.”
