Jesus Ascends to Heaven(A)

(B)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, (C)He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them (D)in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (E)will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 (F)Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up (G)into the upper room where they were staying: (H)Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and (I)Simon the Zealot; and (J)Judas the son of James. 14 (K)These all continued with one [a]accord in prayer [b]and supplication, with (L)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with (M)His brothers.

Matthias Chosen(N)

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [c]disciples (altogether the number (O)of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, (P)which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (Q)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for (R)he was numbered with us and obtained a part in (S)this ministry.”

18 (T)(Now this man purchased a field with (U)the [d]wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his [e]entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

(V)‘Let his dwelling place be [f]desolate,
And let no one live in it’;

and,

(W)‘Let another take his [g]office.’

21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when (X)He was taken up from us, one of these must (Y)become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23 And they proposed two: Joseph called (Z)Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, (AA)who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 (AB)to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

And these things having said -- they beholding -- he was taken up, and a cloud did receive him up from their sight;

10 and as they were looking stedfastly to the heaven in his going on, then, lo, two men stood by them in white apparel,

11 who also said, `Men, Galileans, why do ye stand gazing into the heaven? this Jesus who was received up from you into the heaven, shall so come in what manner ye saw him going on to the heaven.'

12 Then did they return to Jerusalem from the mount that is called of Olives, that is near Jerusalem, a sabbath's journey;

13 and when they came in, they went up to the upper room, where were abiding both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James, of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zelotes, and Judas, of James;

14 these all were continuing with one accord in prayer and supplication, with women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15 And in these days, Peter having risen up in the midst of the disciples, said, (the multitude also of the names at the same place was, as it were, an hundred and twenty,)

16 `Men, brethren, it behoved this Writing that it be fulfilled that beforehand the Holy Spirit spake through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus,

17 because he was numbered among us, and did receive the share in this ministration,

18 this one, indeed, then, purchased a field out of the reward of unrighteousness, and falling headlong, burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed forth,

19 and it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, insomuch that that place is called, in their proper dialect, Aceldama, that is, field of blood,

20 for it hath been written in the book of Psalms: Let his lodging-place become desolate, and let no one be dwelling in it, and his oversight let another take.

21 `It behoveth, therefore, of the men who did go with us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,

22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day in which he was received up from us, one of these to become with us a witness of his rising again.'

23 And they set two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias,

24 and having prayed, they said, `Thou, Lord, who art knowing the heart of all, shew which one thou didst choose of these two

25 to receive the share of this ministration and apostleship, from which Judas, by transgression, did fall, to go on to his proper place;'

26 and they gave their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

The Ascension

And after He had said these things, (A)He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, (B)two men in white clothing stood beside them, 11 and they said, “(C)Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who (D)has been taken up from you into heaven, will (E)come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room

12 Then they (F)returned to Jerusalem from the [a](G)mountain called [b]Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a [c]Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to (H)the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, (I)Peter, John, [d]James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, [e]James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and (J)Judas the [f]son of [g]James. 14 All these (K)were continually devoting themselves with one [h]mind to prayer, along with (L)the women, and Mary the (M)mother of Jesus, and with His (N)brothers.

15 [i]At this time Peter stood up among (O)the brothers and sisters (a group of about 120 [j]people was there together), and said, 16 [k]Brothers, (P)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (Q)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was (R)counted among us and received his share in (S)this ministry.” 18 (Now this man (T)acquired a field with (U)the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in (V)their own language, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms:

(W)May his residence be made desolate,
And may there be none living in it’;

and,

(X)May another take his [l]office.’

21 Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that (Y)the Lord Jesus went in and out [m]among us— 22 (Z)beginning [n]with the baptism of John until the day that He (AA)was taken up from us—one of these must become a (AB)witness with us of His resurrection.” 23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and (AC)Matthias. 24 And they (AD)prayed and said, “You, Lord, who (AE)know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen 25 to [o]occupy (AF)this ministry and (AG)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they [p](AH)drew lots for them, and the lot fell [q]to (AI)Matthias; and he was added to (AJ)the eleven apostles.
