¹⁵ In those days Peter stood up among ^(A)the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, ¹⁶ “Brothers, ^(B)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, ^(C)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷ For ^(D)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in ^(E)this ministry.” ¹⁸ (Now this man ^(F)acquired a field with ^(G)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong^[a] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. ¹⁹ And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called ^(H)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) ²⁰ “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

²¹ So one of the men who have accompanied us during ^(K)all the time that the Lord Jesus ^(L)went in and out among us, ^22 (M)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when ^(N)he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us ^(O)a witness to his resurrection.” ²³ And they put forward two, Joseph called ^(P)Barsabbas, who was also called ^(Q)Justus, and ^(R)Matthias. ²⁴ And ^(S)they prayed and said, “You, Lord, ^(T)who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen ²⁵ to take the place in ^(U)this ministry and ^(V)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Testimony Concerning the Son of God

⁶ This is he who came ^(A)by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And ^(B)the Spirit is the one who testifies, because ^(C)the Spirit is the truth. ⁷ For there are three that testify: ⁸ the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. ^9 (D)If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God ^(E)that he has borne concerning his Son. ¹⁰ Whoever believes in the Son of God ^(F)has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God ^(G)has made him a liar, ^(H)because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. ¹¹ And this is the testimony, that God gave us ^(I)eternal life, and ^(J)this life is in his Son. ^12 (K)Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

That You May Know

¹³ I write ^(L)these things to you who ^(M)believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. ¹⁴ And this is ^(N)the confidence that we have toward him, that ^(O)if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. ¹⁵ And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

I have ^(I)guarded them, and ^(J)not one of them has been lost except ^(K)the son of destruction, ^(L)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³ But now ^(M)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have ^(N)my joy fulfilled in themselves. ^14 (O)I have given them your word, and ^(P)the world has hated them ^(Q)because they are not of the world, ^(R)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I ^(S)do not ask that you ^(T)take them out of the world, but that you ^(U)keep them from ^(V)the evil one.^{[a] 16 (W)}They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ^17 (X)Sanctify them^[b] in the truth; ^(Y)your word is truth. ^18 (Z)As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. ¹⁹ And ^(AA)for their sake ^(AB)I consecrate myself,^[c] that they also ^(AC)may be sanctified^[d] in truth.
