The Coming of the Lord

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, (A)that you may not grieve as others do (B)who have no hope. 14 For (C)since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him (D)those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you (E)by a word from the Lord,[a] that (F)we who are alive, who are left until (G)the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For (H)the Lord himself will descend (I)from heaven (J)with a cry of command, with the voice of (K)an archangel, and (L)with the sound of the trumpet of God. And (M)the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be (N)caught up together with them (O)in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so (P)we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning (Q)the times and the seasons, brothers,[b] (R)you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that (S)the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then (T)sudden destruction will come upon them (U)as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you (V)are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all (W)children[c] of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then (X)let us not sleep, as others do, but let us (Y)keep awake and (Z)be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, (AA)are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, (AB)having put on the breastplate of (AC)faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for (AD)wrath, but (AE)to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (AF)who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

21 For as the Father (A)raises the dead and (B)gives them life, so (C)also the Son gives life (D)to whom he will. 22 (E)For the Father judges no one, but (F)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (G)honor the Father. (H)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (I)whoever hears my word and (J)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (K)does not come into judgment, but (L)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (M)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (N)the dead will hear (O)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (P)will live. 26 (Q)For as the Father has life in himself, (R)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (S)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (T)an hour is coming when (U)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (V)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowds and went into (A)the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, (B)“Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is (C)the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are (D)the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. (E)The harvest is (F)the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds (G)are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at (H)the end of the age. 41 (I)The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all (J)causes of sin and (K)all law-breakers, 42 (L)and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place (M)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then (N)the righteous will shine like the sun (O)in the kingdom of their Father. (P)He who has ears, let him hear.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44 “The kingdom of heaven (Q)is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy (R)he goes and sells all that he has and (S)buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding (T)one pearl of great value, (U)went and sold all that he had and (V)bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is (W)like a net that was thrown into the sea and (X)gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, (Y)men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at (Z)the end of the age. The angels will come out and (AA)separate the evil from the righteous 50 (AB)and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place (AC)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, (G)at the very gates. 34 (H)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 (I)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (J)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “But concerning that day and hour (K)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, (L)nor the Son,[a] (M)but the Father only. 37 (N)For as were the days of Noah, (O)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 (P)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (Q)marrying and giving in marriage, until (R)the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, (S)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 (T)Two women will be grinding (U)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, (V)stay awake, for you do not know on what day (W)your Lord is coming. 43 (X)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night (Y)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be (Z)ready, for (AA)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45 “Who then is (AB)the faithful and (AC)wise servant,[b] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 (AD)Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

The Judgment at Christ's Coming

This is (A)evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be (B)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— since indeed God considers it (C)just (D)to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant (E)relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when (F)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (G)with his mighty angels (H)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those (I)who do not know God and on those who (J)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of (K)eternal destruction, (L)away from[a] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 (M)when he comes on (N)that day (O)to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our (P)testimony to you (Q)was believed. 11 To this end we (R)always pray for you, that our God may (S)make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every (T)work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus (U)may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Thousand Years

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, (A)holding in his hand the key to (B)the bottomless pit[a] and a great chain. And he seized (C)the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and (D)bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into (E)the pit, and shut it and (F)sealed it over him, so that (G)he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

Then I saw (H)thrones, and (I)seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw (J)the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those (K)who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. (L)They came to life and (M)reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. (N)Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such (O)the second death has no power, but they will be (P)priests of God and of Christ, and they (Q)will reign with him for a thousand years.

The Defeat of Satan

And when the thousand years are ended, (R)Satan will be released from his prison and will come out (S)to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, (T)Gog and Magog, (U)to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And (V)they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded (W)the camp of the saints and (X)the beloved city, but (Y)fire came down from heaven[b] and consumed them, 10 and the devil (Z)who had deceived them was (AA)thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where (AB)the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Judgment Before the Great White Throne

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence (AC)earth and sky fled away, and (AD)no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and (AE)books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is (AF)the book of life. And (AG)the dead were judged by what was written in the books, (AH)according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, (AI)Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, (AJ)according to what they had done. 14 Then (AK)Death and Hades (AL)were thrown into the lake of fire. This is (AM)the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, (AN)he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The New Heaven and the New Earth

21 Then I saw (AO)a new heaven and a new earth, for (AP)the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw (AQ)the holy city, (AR)new Jerusalem, (AS)coming down out of heaven from God, (AT)prepared (AU)as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, (AV)the dwelling place[c] of God is with man. He will (AW)dwell with them, and they will be his people,[d] and God himself will be with them as their God.[e] (AX)He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and (AY)death shall be no more, (AZ)neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And (BA)he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I (BB)am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for (BC)these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, (BD)“It is done! (BE)I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. (BF)To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. (BG)The one who conquers will have this heritage, and (BH)I will be his God and (BI)he will be my son. (BJ)But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, (BK)their portion will be in (BL)the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is (BM)the second death.”

The New Jerusalem

Then came (BN)one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of (BO)the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you (BP)the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And (BQ)he carried me away in the Spirit to (BR)a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 (BS)having the glory of God, (BT)its radiance (BU)like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, (BV)with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve (BW)foundations, and (BX)on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 And the one who spoke with me (BY)had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.[f] Its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits[g] by (BZ)human measurement, which is also (CA)an angel's measurement. 18 The wall was built of (CB)jasper, while the city was pure gold, like (CC)clear glass. 19 (CD)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and (CE)the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 And (CF)I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city (CG)has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for (CH)the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light (CI)will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth (CJ)will bring their glory into it, 25 and (CK)its gates will never be shut by day—and (CL)there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But (CM)nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's (CN)book of life.

The River of Life

22 Then the angel[h] showed me (CO)the river of (CP)the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of (CQ)the street of the city; (CR)also, on either side of the river, (CS)the tree of life[i] with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were (CT)for the healing of the nations. (CU)No longer will there be anything accursed, but (CV)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and (CW)his servants will worship him. (CX)They will see his face, and (CY)his name will be on their foreheads. And (CZ)night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp (DA)or sun, for (DB)the Lord God will be their light, and (DC)they will reign forever and ever.

Jesus Is Coming

And he said to me, (DD)“These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of (DE)the spirits of the prophets, (DF)has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”

“And behold, (DG)I am coming soon. (DH)Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

I, (DI)John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, (DJ)I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, (DK)but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those (DL)who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

10 And he said to me, (DM)“Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 (DN)Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”

12 “Behold, (DO)I am coming soon, (DP)bringing my recompense with me, (DQ)to repay each one for what he has done. 13 (DR)I am the Alpha and the Omega, (DS)the first and the last, (DT)the beginning and the end.”

14 Blessed are those who (DU)wash their robes,[j] so that they may have the right to (DV)the tree of life and that (DW)they may enter the city by the gates. 15 (DX)Outside are (DY)the dogs (DZ)and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 (EA)“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things (EB)for the churches. I am (EC)the root and (ED)the descendant of David, (EE)the bright morning star.”

17 The Spirit and (EF)the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And (EG)let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the (EH)water of life without price.

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: (EI)if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in (EJ)the tree of life and in (EK)the holy city, which are described in this book.

20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely (EL)I am coming soon.” Amen. (EM)Come, Lord Jesus!

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.[k] Amen.
