Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing (A)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, (B)claiming to be someone great; 10 and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “(C)This man is the Power of God that is called Great.” 11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his (D)magic arts. 12 But when they believed Philip (E)as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being (F)baptized. 13 Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed (G)signs and (H)great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed.

14 Now when (I)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them (J)Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them (K)that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For He had (L)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been (M)baptized [a]in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they (N)began laying their hands on them, and they were (O)receiving the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could (P)acquire the gift of God with money! 21 You have (Q)no part or share in this [b]matter, for your heart is not (R)right before God. 22 Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (S)if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are [c]in the gall of bitterness and in (T)the [d]bondage of unrighteousness.” 24 But Simon answered and said, “(U)Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

And a certain man, by name Simon, was before in the city using magic, and amazing the nation of Samaria, saying himself to be a certain great one,

10 to whom they were all giving heed, from small unto great, saying, `This one is the great power of God;'

11 and they were giving heed to him, because of his having for a long time amazed them with deeds of magic.

12 And when they believed Philip, proclaiming good news, the things concerning the reign of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized both men and women;

13 and Simon also himself did believe, and, having been baptized, he was continuing with Philip, beholding also signs and mighty acts being done, he was amazed.

14 And the apostles in Jerusalem having heard that Samaria hath received the word of God, did send unto them Peter and John,

15 who having come down did pray concerning them, that they may receive the Holy Spirit, --

16 for as yet he was fallen upon none of them, and only they have been baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus;

17 then were they laying hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 And Simon, having beheld that through the laying on of the hands of the apostles, the Holy Spirit is given, brought before them money,

19 saying, `Give also to me this authority, that on whomsoever I may lay the hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.'

20 And Peter said unto him, `Thy silver with thee -- may it be to destruction! because the gift of God thou didst think to possess through money;

21 thou hast neither part nor lot in this thing, for thy heart is not right before God;

22 reform, therefore, from this thy wickedness, and beseech God, if then the purpose of thy heart may be forgiven thee,

23 for in the gall of bitterness, and bond of unrighteousness, I perceive thee being.'

24 And Simon answering, said, `Beseech ye for me unto the Lord, that nothing may come upon me of the things ye have spoken.'

Simon the Sorcerer

Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(A) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(B) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(C) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(D) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(E) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(F) he saw.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria(G) had accepted the word of God,(H) they sent Peter and John(I) to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(J) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(K) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(L) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(M) and they received the Holy Spirit.(N)

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(O) 21 You have no part or share(P) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(Q) before God. 22 Repent(R) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”

24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(S) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
