55 But he, (A)full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw (B)the glory of God, and Jesus standing (C)at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see (D)the heavens opened, and (E)the Son of Man standing (F)at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together[a] at him. 58 Then (G)they cast him out of the city and (H)stoned him. And (I)the witnesses laid down their garments (J)at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, (K)he called out, “Lord Jesus, (L)receive my spirit.” 60 And (M)falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, (N)“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, (O)he fell asleep.

55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(A) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(B) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(C) and the Son of Man(D) standing at the right hand of God.”

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(E) and began to stone him.(F) Meanwhile, the witnesses(G) laid their coats(H) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(I)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(J) 60 Then he fell on his knees(K) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(L) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(M)

(A)Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual (B)milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have (C)tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone (D)rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, (E)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as (F)a spiritual house, to be (G)a holy priesthood, (H)to offer spiritual sacrifices (I)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

(J)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(K)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (L)believe, but for those who (M)do not believe,

(N)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[a]

and

(O)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (P)as they were destined to do.

But you are (Q)a chosen race, (R)a royal (S)priesthood, (T)a holy nation, (U)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you (V)out of darkness into (W)his marvelous light. 10 (X)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(A) so that by it you may grow up(B) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(C)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(D)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(E) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(F) into a spiritual house[a](G) to be a holy priesthood,(H) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(I) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(J)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[b](K)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(L)

“The stone the builders rejected(M)
    has become the cornerstone,”[c](N)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[d](O)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(P)

But you are a chosen people,(Q) a royal priesthood,(R) a holy nation,(S) God’s special possession,(T) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(U) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(V) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (A)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (B)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (C)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (D)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (E)to myself, that (F)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (G)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (H)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (I)the way, and (J)the truth, and (K)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (L)If you had known me, you would have (M)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (N)have seen him.”

(O)Philip said to him, “Lord, (P)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (Q)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (R)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (S)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (T)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (U)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (V)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (W)am going to the Father. 13 (X)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (Y)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (Z)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(A) You believe(B) in God[a];(C) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(D) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(E) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(F) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(G) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(H) the way(I) and the truth(J) and the life.(K) No one comes to the Father except through me.(L) If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well.(M) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(N) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(O) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(P) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(Q) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(R) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(S) in me will do the works I have been doing,(T) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(U) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
