Acts 4
English Standard Version
Peter and John Before the Council
4Â And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and (A)the captain of the temple and (B)the Sadducees came upon them, 2Â greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming (C)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3Â And they arrested them and (D)put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4Â But many of those who had heard the word believed, and (E)the number of the men came to about five thousand.
5Â On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6Â with (F)Annas the high priest and (G)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7Â And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, (H)âBy what power or (I)by what name did you do this?â 8Â Then Peter, (J)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, âRulers of the people and elders, 9Â if we are being examined today (K)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10Â let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that (L)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (M)whom God raised from the deadâby him this man is standing before you well. 11Â (N)This Jesus[a] is the stone that was (O)rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12Â And there is (P)salvation (Q)in no one else, for (R)there is no other (S)name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.â
13Â (T)Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14Â But seeing the man who was healed (U)standing beside them, (V)they had nothing to say in opposition. 15Â But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16Â saying, (W)âWhat shall we do with these men? For that (X)a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17Â But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them (Y)to speak no more to anyone in this name.â 18Â So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19Â But Peter and John answered them, (Z)âWhether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20Â for (AA)we cannot but speak of what (AB)we have seen and heard.â 21Â And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, (AC)because of the people, for all were praising God (AD)for what had happened. 22Â For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.
The Believers Pray for Boldness
23Â When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24Â And when they heard it, they lifted their voices (AE)together to God and said, âSovereign Lord, (AF)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25Â who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,[d] said by the Holy Spirit,
(AG)ââWhy did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
26Â The kings of the earth set themselves,
and (AH)the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his (AI)Anointedâ[e]â
27Â for truly in this city there were gathered together against your (AJ)holy servant Jesus, (AK)whom you anointed, both (AL)Herod and (AM)Pontius Pilate, along (AN)with the Gentiles and (AO)the peoples of Israel, 28Â (AP)to do whatever your hand and (AQ)your plan had predestined to take place. 29Â And now, Lord, (AR)look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all (AS)boldness, 30Â while (AT)you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed (AU)through the name of your (AV)holy servant Jesus.â 31Â And when they had prayed, (AW)the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and (AX)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and (AY)continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
They Had Everything in Common
32Â Now the full number of those who believed were of (AZ)one heart and (BA)soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but (BB)they had everything in common. 33Â And with great (BC)power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and (BD)great grace was upon them all. 34Â (BE)There was not a needy person among them, for (BF)as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35Â and (BG)laid it at the apostles' feet, and (BH)it was distributed to each as any had need. 36Â Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means (BI)son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37Â sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and (BJ)laid it at the apostles' feet.

Peter and John Arrested
4Â While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,(A) 2Â because they were annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(B) 3Â So they seized them and took them into custody until the next day since it was already evening. 4Â But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men[a] came to about five thousand.
Peter and John Face the Jewish Leadership
5Â The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem 6Â with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.(C) 7Â After they had Peter and John stand before them, they began to question them: âBy what power or in what name have you done this?â
8Â Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, âRulers of the people and elders:[b](D) 9Â If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man, by what means he was healed, 10Â let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the deadâby him this man is standing here before you healthy.(E) 11Â This Jesus is
12Â There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.â(G)
The Boldness of the Disciples
13Â When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.(H) 14Â And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15Â After they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves, 16Â saying, âWhat should we do with these men? For an obvious sign has been done through them, clear to everyone living in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.(I) 17Â But so that this does not spread any further among the people, letâs threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again.â 18Â So they called for them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19Â Peter and John answered them, âWhether itâs right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;(J) 20Â for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.â(K)
21Â After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done.(L) 22Â For this sign of healing had been performed on a man over forty years old.
Prayer for Boldness
23Â After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24Â When they heard this, they raised their voices together to God and said, âMaster, you are the one who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.(M) 25Â You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David your servant:[d]
Why do the Gentiles rage
and the peoples plot futile things?
26Â The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers assemble together
against the Lord and against his Messiah.[e](N)
27Â âFor, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,(O) 28Â to do whatever your hand and your will had predestined to take place. 29Â And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that your servants may speak your word with all boldness,(P) 30Â while you stretch out your hand for healing, and signs and wonders(Q) are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.â 31Â When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.(R)
All Things in Common
32Â Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.(S) 33Â With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.(T) 34Â For there was not a needy person among them because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of what was sold,(U) 35Â and laid them at the apostlesâ feet. This was then distributed to each person as any had need.(V)
36Â Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas (which is translated Son of Encouragement),(W) 37Â sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostlesâ feet.(X)
Acts 4
New International Version
Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
4Â The priests and the captain of the temple guard(A) and the Sadducees(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2Â They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(C) 3Â They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(D) until the next day. 4Â But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(E) to about five thousand.
5Â The next day the rulers,(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6Â Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priestâs family. 7Â They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: âBy what power or what name did you do this?â
8Â Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(H) said to them: âRulers and elders of the people!(I) 9Â If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(J) and are being asked how he was healed, 10Â then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(L) that this man stands before you healed. 11Â Jesus is
12Â Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.â(N)
13Â When they saw the courage of Peter and John(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(Q) 14Â But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15Â So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(R) and then conferred together. 16Â âWhat are we going to do with these men?â(S) they asked. âEveryone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(T) and we cannot deny it. 17Â But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.â
18Â Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(U) 19Â But Peter and John replied, âWhich is right in Godâs eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(V) You be the judges! 20Â As for us, we cannot help speaking(W) about what we have seen and heard.â(X)
21Â After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(Y) were praising God(Z) for what had happened. 22Â For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23Â On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24Â When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(AA) âSovereign Lord,â they said, âyou made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(AB) 25Â You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(AC)
ââWhy do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26Â The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.[b]â[c](AD)
27Â Indeed Herod(AE) and Pontius Pilate(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(AG) whom you anointed. 28Â They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(AH) 29Â Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(AI) 30Â Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.â(AK)
31Â After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(AM) and spoke the word of God(AN) boldly.(AO)
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32Â All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(AP) 33Â With great power the apostles continued to testify(AQ) to the resurrection(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And Godâs grace(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all 34Â that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(AT) brought the money from the sales 35Â and put it at the apostlesâ feet,(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(AV)
36Â Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(AW) (which means âson of encouragementâ), 37Â sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostlesâ feet.(AX)
