Paul Sails for Rome
27 When it was decided that we were to sail for Italy, they transferred Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort, named Julius. 2 Embarking on a ship of Adramyttium that was about to set sail to the ports along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica. 3 The next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly, and allowed him to go to his friends to be cared for. 4 Putting out to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us. 5 After we had sailed across the sea that is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia. 6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship bound for Italy and put us on board. 7 We sailed slowly for a number of days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind was against us, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone. 8 Sailing past it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.
9 Since much time had been lost and sailing was now dangerous, because even the Fast had already gone by, Paul advised them, 10 saying, “Sirs, I can see that the voyage will be with danger and much heavy loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” 11 But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said. 12 Since the harbor was not suitable for spending the winter, the majority was in favor of putting to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, where they could spend the winter. It was a harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest.
The Storm at Sea
13 When a moderate south wind began to blow, they thought they could achieve their purpose; so they weighed anchor and began to sail past Crete, close to the shore. 14 But soon a violent wind, called the northeaster, rushed down from Crete.[a] 15 Since the ship was caught and could not be turned head-on into the wind, we gave way to it and were driven. 16 By running under the lee of a small island called Cauda[b] we were scarcely able to get the ship’s boat under control. 17 After hoisting it up they took measures[c] to undergird the ship; then, fearing that they would run on the Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and so were driven. 18 We were being pounded by the storm so violently that on the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard, 19 and on the third day with their own hands they threw the ship’s tackle overboard. 20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest raged, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.
21 Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul then stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and thereby avoided this damage and loss. 22 I urge you now to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For last night there stood by me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, 24 and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before the emperor; and indeed, God has granted safety to all those who are sailing with you.’ 25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. 26 But we will have to run aground on some island.”
27 When the fourteenth night had come, as we were drifting across the sea of Adria, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land. 28 So they took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they took soundings again and found fifteen fathoms. 29 Fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let down four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come. 30 But when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, on the pretext of putting out anchors from the bow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.” 32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and set it adrift.
33 Just before daybreak, Paul urged all of them to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have been in suspense and remaining without food, having eaten nothing. 34 Therefore I urge you to take some food, for it will help you survive; for none of you will lose a hair from your heads.” 35 After he had said this, he took bread; and giving thanks to God in the presence of all, he broke it and began to eat. 36 Then all of them were encouraged and took food for themselves. 37 (We were in all two hundred seventy-six[d] persons in the ship.) 38 After they had satisfied their hunger, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.
The Shipwreck
39 In the morning they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned to run the ship ashore, if they could. 40 So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea. At the same time they loosened the ropes that tied the steering-oars; then hoisting the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. 41 But striking a reef,[e] they ran the ship aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves. 42 The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners, so that none might swim away and escape; 43 but the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land, 44 and the rest to follow, some on planks and others on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all were brought safely to land.

27 Quando fu deciso che noi salpassimo per l’Italia, Paolo con altri prigionieri furono consegnati a un centurione, di nome Giulio, della coorte Augusta. 2 Saliti sopra una nave di Adramitto[a], che doveva toccare i porti della costa d’Asia, salpammo, avendo con noi Aristarco, un Macedone di Tessalonica.
3 Il giorno seguente arrivammo a Sidone; e Giulio, usando benevolenza verso Paolo, gli permise di andare dai suoi amici per ricevere le loro cure. 4 Poi, partiti di là, navigammo al riparo di Cipro, perché i venti erano contrari. 5 E, attraversato il mare di Cilicia e di Panfilia, arrivammo a Mira di Licia. 6 Il centurione, trovata qui una nave alessandrina che faceva vela per l’Italia, ci fece salire su quella.
7 Navigando per molti giorni lentamente, giungemmo a fatica, per l’impedimento del vento, di fronte a Cnido[b]. Poi veleggiammo sotto Creta, al largo di Salmone[c]; 8 e, costeggiandola con difficoltà, giungemmo a un luogo detto Beiporti, vicino al quale era la città di Lasea.
9 Intanto era trascorso molto tempo e la navigazione si era fatta pericolosa, poiché anche il giorno del digiuno[d] era passato. Paolo allora li ammonì dicendo: 10 «Uomini, vedo che la navigazione si farà pericolosa con grave danno, non solo del carico e della nave, ma anche delle nostre persone». 11 Il centurione però aveva più fiducia nel pilota e nel padrone della nave che non nelle parole di Paolo. 12 E, siccome quel porto[e] non era adatto a svernare, la maggioranza fu del parere di partire di là per cercare di arrivare a Fenice, un porto di Creta esposto a sud-ovest e a nord-ovest[f], e di passarvi l’inverno.
13 Intanto si era alzato un leggero scirocco e, credendo di poter attuare il loro proposito, levarono le ancore e si misero a costeggiare l’isola di Creta più da vicino.
La tempesta
14 (A)Ma poco dopo si scatenò giù dall’isola un vento impetuoso, chiamato Euroaquilone[g]; 15 la nave fu trascinata via e, non potendo resistere al vento, la lasciammo andare ed eravamo portati alla deriva. 16 Passati rapidamente sotto un’isoletta chiamata Clauda[h], a stento potemmo impadronirci della scialuppa. 17 Dopo averla issata a bordo, utilizzavano dei mezzi di rinforzo, cingendo la nave[i] di sotto; e, temendo di finire incagliati nelle Sirti[j], calarono l’àncora[k] galleggiante, e si andava così alla deriva. 18 Siccome eravamo sbattuti violentemente dalla tempesta, il giorno dopo cominciarono a gettare il carico. 19 Il terzo giorno, con le loro proprie mani, buttarono in mare[l] l’attrezzatura della nave. 20 Già da molti giorni non si vedevano né sole né stelle, e sopra di noi infuriava una forte tempesta, sicché ogni speranza di scampare era ormai persa.
21 Dopo che furono rimasti per lungo tempo senza mangiare, Paolo si alzò in mezzo a loro e disse: «Uomini, bisognava darmi ascolto e non partire da Creta, per evitare questo pericolo e questa perdita. 22 Ora però vi esorto a stare di buon animo, perché non vi sarà perdita della vita per nessuno di voi ma solo della nave. 23 Poiché un angelo del Dio al quale appartengo, e che io servo, mi è apparso questa notte, 24 dicendo: “Paolo, non temere; bisogna che tu compaia davanti a Cesare, ed ecco, Dio ti ha dato tutti quelli che navigano con te”. 25 Perciò, uomini, state di buon animo, perché ho fede in Dio che avverrà come mi è stato detto. 26 Dovremo però essere gettati sopra un’isola».
27 E la quattordicesima notte da che eravamo portati qua e là per l’Adriatico[m], verso la mezzanotte, i marinai sospettavano di essere vicini a terra; 28 e, calato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti braccia; poi, passati un po’ oltre e scandagliato di nuovo, trovarono quindici braccia. 29 Temendo allora di urtare contro gli scogli, gettarono da poppa quattro ancore, aspettando con ansia che si facesse giorno.
30 Ma siccome i marinai cercavano di fuggire dalla nave, e già stavano calando la scialuppa in mare con il pretesto di voler gettare le ancore da prua, 31 Paolo disse al centurione e ai soldati: «Se costoro non rimangono sulla nave, voi non potete scampare». 32 Allora i soldati tagliarono le funi della scialuppa e la lasciarono cadere.
33 Finché non si fece giorno, Paolo esortava tutti a prendere cibo, dicendo: «Oggi sono quattordici giorni che state aspettando, sempre digiuni, senza prendere nulla. 34 Perciò vi esorto a prendere cibo, perché questo contribuirà alla vostra salvezza; e neppure un capello del vostro capo perirà[n]». 35 Detto questo, prese del pane e rese grazie a Dio in presenza di tutti; poi lo spezzò e cominciò a mangiare. 36 E tutti, incoraggiati, presero anch’essi del cibo. 37 Sulla nave eravamo duecentosettantasei persone in tutto. 38 E, dopo essersi saziati, alleggerirono la nave, gettando il frumento in mare.
Il naufragio
39 Quando fu giorno non riuscivano a riconoscere il paese; ma scorsero un’insenatura con spiaggia e decisero, se possibile, di spingervi la nave. 40 Staccate le ancore, le lasciarono andare in mare; sciolsero al tempo stesso i legami dei timoni e, alzata la vela maestra al vento, si diressero verso la spiaggia. 41 Ma essendo incappati in un luogo che aveva il mare dai due lati, vi fecero arenare la nave; e mentre la prua, incagliata, rimaneva immobile, la poppa si sfasciava per la violenza {delle onde}.
42 Il parere dei soldati era di uccidere i prigionieri perché nessuno fuggisse a nuoto. 43 Ma il centurione, volendo salvare Paolo, li distolse da quel proposito e ordinò che per primi si gettassero in mare quelli che sapevano nuotare, per giungere a terra, 44 e poi gli altri, chi sopra tavole e chi su rottami della nave. E così avvenne che tutti giunsero salvi a terra.

27 Als es aber beschlossen worden war, dass wir nach Italien abfahren sollten, übergaben sie Paulus und einige andere Gefangene einem Hauptmann namens Julius von der Kaiserlichen Schar.
2 Nachdem wir aber ein Schiff aus Adramyttium bestiegen hatten, das die Häfen von Asia anlaufen sollte, reisten wir ab in Begleitung des Aristarchus, eines Mazedoniers aus Thessalonich.
3 Und am nächsten Tag liefen wir in Zidon ein; und Julius erzeigte sich freundlich gegen Paulus und erlaubte ihm, zu seinen Freunden zu gehen und ihre Pflege zu genießen.
4 Von dort fuhren wir ab und segelten unter Zypern hin, weil die Winde uns entgegen waren.
5 Und nachdem wir das Meer bei Cilicien und Pamphilien durchsegelt hatten, kamen wir nach Myra in Lycien.
6 Und dort fand der Hauptmann ein Schiff aus Alexandria, das nach Italien segelte, und brachte uns auf dasselbe.
7 Da wir aber während vieler Tage eine langsame Fahrt hatten und nur mit Mühe in die Nähe von Knidus kamen, weil der Wind uns nicht hinzuließ, so segelten wir unter Kreta hin gegen Salmone;
8 und indem wir mit Mühe der Küste entlangfuhren, kamen wir an einen Ort, »Die schönen Häfen« genannt, in dessen Nähe die Stadt Lasäa war.
9 Da aber schon geraume Zeit verflossen war und die Schifffahrt gefährlich wurde, weil auch das Fasten[a] bereits vorüber war, warnte sie Paulus
10 und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr Männer, ich sehe, dass diese Schiffsreise mit Schädigung und großem Verlust nicht nur für die Ladung und das Schiff, sondern auch für unser Leben verbunden sein wird!
11 Aber der Hauptmann glaubte dem Steuermann und dem Schiffsherrn mehr als dem, was Paulus sagte.
12 Da aber der Hafen ungeeignet war zum Überwintern, gab die Mehrzahl den Rat, auch von dort abzufahren, um wenn irgend möglich nach Phönix zu gelangen, einem Hafen von Kreta, der gegen Südwest und Nordwest offen liegt, und dort zu überwintern.
13 Da nun ein schwacher Südwind wehte, meinten sie, sie hätten ihre Absicht erreicht, lichteten die Anker und segelten nahe bei der Küste von Kreta hin.
Der Sturm
14 Aber nicht lange danach fegte ein Wirbelwind von der Insel daher, »Euroklydon« genannt.
15 Und da das Schiff mit fortgerissen wurde und dem Wind nicht widerstehen konnte, gaben wir es preis und ließen uns treiben.
16 Als wir aber an einer kleinen Insel, Klauda genannt, vorbeifuhren, konnten wir kaum das Beiboot meistern.
17 Als sie es heraufgezogen hatten, trafen sie Schutzmaßnahmen, indem sie das Schiff untergürteten[b]; und weil sie fürchteten, in die Syrte[c] verschlagen zu werden, zogen sie die Segel ein und ließen sich so treiben.
18 Da wir aber von dem Sturm heftig umhergetrieben wurden, warfen sie am folgenden Tag einen Teil der Ladung über Bord,
19 und am dritten Tag warfen wir mit eigener Hand das Schiffsgerät hinaus.
20 Da aber während mehrerer Tage weder Sonne noch Sterne sichtbar waren und ein heftiger Sturm anhielt, schwand endlich alle Hoffnung, dass wir gerettet werden könnten.
21 Und da man lange ohne Nahrung geblieben war, stand Paulus in ihrer Mitte auf und sprach: Ihr Männer, man hätte zwar mir gehorchen und nicht von Kreta abfahren sollen und sich so diese Schädigung und den Verlust ersparen sollen.
22 Doch jetzt ermahne ich euch, guten Mutes zu sein, denn keiner von euch wird das Leben verlieren, nur das Schiff wird untergehen!
23 In dieser Nacht trat zu mir nämlich ein Engel des Gottes, dem ich angehöre und dem ich auch diene,
24 und sprach: Fürchte dich nicht, Paulus! Du musst vor den Kaiser treten; und siehe, Gott hat dir alle geschenkt, die mit dir im Schiff sind!
25 Darum seid guten Mutes, ihr Männer! Denn ich vertraue Gott, dass es so gehen wird, wie es mir gesagt worden ist.
26 Wir müssen aber auf eine Insel verschlagen werden!
27 Als nun die vierzehnte Nacht kam, seitdem wir auf dem Adriatischen Meer umhergetrieben wurden, vermuteten die Schiffsleute um Mitternacht, dass sie sich einem Land näherten.
28 Und sie ließen das Senkblei hinunter und maßen 20 Faden. Und als sie ein wenig weitergefahren waren und es wieder hinunterließen, maßen sie 15 Faden.
29 Und da sie fürchteten, sie könnten auf Klippen verschlagen werden, warfen sie vom Heck des Schiffes vier Anker aus und wünschten, dass es Tag würde.
30 Als aber die Schiffsleute aus dem Schiff zu entfliehen suchten und das Boot ins Meer hinabließen unter dem Vorwand, sie wollten vom Bug Anker auswerfen,
31 sprach Paulus zu dem Hauptmann und zu den Soldaten: Wenn diese nicht im Schiff bleiben, könnt ihr nicht gerettet werden!
32 Da schnitten die Kriegsknechte die Taue des Bootes ab und ließen es hinunterfallen.
33 Als es aber Tag werden wollte, ermahnte Paulus alle, Speise zu sich zu nehmen, und sprach: Es ist heute der vierzehnte Tag, dass ihr vor ängstlicher Erwartung ohne Nahrung geblieben seid und nichts zu euch genommen habt.
34 Darum ermahne ich euch, Speise zu euch zu nehmen, denn das dient zu eurer Rettung; denn keinem von euch wird ein Haar vom Haupt fallen!
35 Und nachdem er das gesagt hatte, nahm er Brot, dankte Gott vor allen, brach es und fing an zu essen.
36 Da wurden alle guten Mutes und nahmen ebenfalls Speise zu sich.
37 Wir waren aber auf dem Schiff insgesamt 276 Seelen.
38 Und nachdem sie sich mit Speise gesättigt hatten, erleichterten sie das Schiff, indem sie das Getreide ins Meer warfen.
Schiffbruch und Rettung
39 Als es aber Tag wurde, erkannten sie das Land nicht; sie bemerkten aber eine Bucht, die ein flaches Ufer hatte; an dieses beschlossen sie das Schiff nach Möglichkeit hintreiben zu lassen.
40 Und so schnitten sie die Anker ab und ließen sie ins Meer und lösten zugleich die Haltetaue der Steuerruder; dann hissten sie das Vordersegel vor den Wind und hielten auf das Ufer zu.
41 Da sie aber an eine Sandbank gerieten, liefen sie mit dem Schiff auf; und das Vorderteil blieb unbeweglich stecken, das Hinterteil aber zerbrach durch die Gewalt der Wellen.
42 Die Soldaten aber fassten den Plan, man solle die Gefangenen töten, damit keiner schwimmend entfliehe.
43 Doch der Hauptmann, der den Paulus retten wollte, verhinderte ihr Vorhaben und befahl, wer schwimmen könne, solle sich zuerst ins Meer werfen, um ans Land zu kommen,
44 und die Übrigen teils auf Brettern, teils auf Schiffstrümmern. Und so geschah es, dass alle ans Land gerettet wurden.

3 Másnap befutottunk Szidónba. Mivel Juliusz emberségesen bánt Pállal, megengedte, hogy elmenjen barátaihoz, és azok gondoskodjanak róla.
4 Onnan továbbindulva Ciprus alatt hajóztunk el, mert ellenszél volt.
5 Majd Cilicia és Pamfília partja mentén haladva befutottunk a líciai Mirába.

Pál tanácsa ellenére továbbhajóznak
9 Mivel pedig közben sok idő telt el, és a hajózás is veszedelmessé vált, hiszen a böjt is elmúlt már, Pál figyelmeztette őket:
10 "Férfiak, látom, hogy a további hajózás nemcsak a rakományra és a hajóra, hanem életünkre nézve is veszélyessé válik."
11 De a százados inkább hitt a kormányosnak és a hajótulajdonosnak, mint annak, amit Pál mondott.
12 A kikötő nem volt alkalmas a telelésre, s ezért a többség úgy döntött, hogy továbbhajóznak onnan, hátha eljutnak Főnixbe, ahol áttelelhetnek. Ez Kréta egyik kikötője, amely délnyugat és északnyugat felé néz.
13 Mivel pedig déli szél kezdett fújni, azt hitték, hogy megvalósíthatják elhatározásukat; felszedték tehát a horgonyt, és továbbhajóztak Kréta közelébe.

16 Amikor egy kis sziget alá futottunk be, amelyet Klaudának hívnak, csak nagy nehezen tudtuk megtartani a mentőcsónakot.
17 Miután ezt felvonták, óvintézkedéseket tettek: alul átkötötték a hajót, és mivel féltek, hogy a Szirtisz tengeröböl zátonyaira futnak, a horgonyt leeresztették, és úgy sodródtak tova.
18 A vihar hevesen dobált bennünket, azért másnap kidobálták a hajóterhet,
19 harmadnap pedig a hajó felszerelését dobálták ki saját kezükkel.
20 Mivel pedig sem a nap, sem a csillagok nem látszottak több napon át, és erős vihar tombolt, végül elveszett megmenekülésünk minden reménye.
21 Minthogy már sokat éheztek is, Pál felállt közöttük, és így szólt: "Az lett volna a helyes, férfiak, ha rám hallgattok, és nem indulunk el Krétából, hogy elkerüljük ezt a veszélyt és ezt a kárt.
22 Én azonban most is azt tanácsolom nektek, hogy bizakodjatok, mert egy lélek sem vész el közületek, csak a hajó.
23 Mert ma éjjel elém állt annak az Istennek az angyala, akié vagyok, és akinek szolgálok.
24 Ez azt mondta: Ne félj, Pál, neked a császár elé kell állnod, és Isten neked ajándékozta mindazokat, akik veled vannak a hajón.
25 Ezért bizakodjatok, férfiak! Én hiszek az Istennek, hogy úgy lesz, ahogyan nekem megmondta.
26 Egy szigetre kell kivetődnünk."

27 Eljött a tizennegyedik éjszaka, mióta az Adrián sodródtunk tovább, amikor éjféltájban azt gyanították a hajósok, hogy valamilyen szárazföldhöz közelednek.
28 Lebocsátották a mérőónt, és húsz ölet állapítottak meg. Amikor pedig kissé továbbmentek, és ismét lebocsátották, tizenöt ölet állapítottak meg.
29 De mivel féltek, hogy esetleg sziklás helyre vetődünk, a hajó farából négy horgonyt vetettek ki, alig várva a virradatot.
30 Ekkor azonban a hajósok meg akartak szökni a hajóról. Le akarták ereszteni a mentőcsónakot a tengerre, azzal az ürüggyel, hogy a hajó orrából akarnak horgonyokat kifeszíteni.
31 Pál azonban így szólt a századoshoz és a katonákhoz: "Ha ezek nem maradnak a hajón, akkor ti sem menekülhettek meg."
32 A katonák ekkor elvágták a mentőcsónak köteleit, és hagyták, hogy elsodorja az ár.
33 Addig pedig, amíg megvirradt, Pál mindnyájukat arra biztatta, hogy egyenek. Így szólt: "Ma a tizennegyedik napja, hogy étlen várakoztok, és semmit sem ettetek.
34 Ezért intelek titeket, hogy egyetek, mert az is megmeneküléseteket szolgálja. Mert közületek senkinek sem esik le egyetlen hajszál sem a fejéről."
35 E szavak után vette a kenyeret, hálát adott Istennek mindnyájuk szeme láttára, megtörte, és enni kezdett.
36 Erre mindnyájan nekibátorodtak, és ők is enni kezdtek.
37 Lélekszám szerint kétszázhetvenhatan voltunk a hajón.
38 Miután jóllaktak, a gabonát a tengerbe szórva könnyítettek a hajón.
39 Amikor megvirradt, a szárazföldet nem ismerték fel, de egy öblöt vettek észre, amelynek lapos volt a partja. Elhatározták, hogy ha tudják, erre futtatják rá a hajót.
40 A horgonyokat eloldották, és a tengerben hagyták, egyúttal a kormányrúd tartóköteleit is megeresztették, és az orrvitorlát szélnek feszítve igyekeztek a part felé.
41 Mikor azonban a földnyelvhez értek, ráfuttatták a hajót, amelynek orra befúródva ott maradt mozdulatlanul, hátsó része pedig a hullámveréstől kezdett szakadozni.
42 A katonáknak az volt a szándékuk, hogy megölik a foglyokat, nehogy valaki kiúszva elmeneküljön.
43 De a százados meg akarta menteni Pált, visszatartotta őket elhatározásuktól, és megparancsolta, hogy akik úszni tudnak, azok ugorjanak először a tengerbe, és meneküljenek a szárazföldre,
44 azután a többiek pedig, ki deszkákon, ki a hajó egyéb darabjain. Így történt, hogy mindnyájan szerencsésen kimenekültek a szárazföldre.

20 “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us,[a] so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
