The Risen Christ, Our Hope(A)

12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (B)then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because (C)we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; (D)you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have [a]fallen (E)asleep in Christ have perished. 19 (F)If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

The Last Enemy Destroyed

20 But now (G)Christ is risen from the dead, and has become (H)the firstfruits of those who have [b]fallen asleep. 21 For (I)since by man came death, (J)by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall (K)be made alive. 23 But (L)each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers (M)the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign (N)till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 (O)The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For (P)“He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.

The Resurrection of the Dead

12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead,(A) how can some of you say that there is no resurrection(B) of the dead?(C) 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised,(D) our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead.(E) But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.(F) 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep(G) in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.(H)

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,(I) the firstfruits(J) of those who have fallen asleep.(K) 21 For since death came through a man,(L) the resurrection of the dead(M) comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.(N) 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits;(O) then, when he comes,(P) those who belong to him.(Q) 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom(R) to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.(S) 25 For he must reign(T) until he has put all his enemies under his feet.(U) 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.(V) 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.”[a](W) Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.(X)

20 For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because (A)for the hope of Israel I am bound with (B)this chain.”

21 Then they said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect, we know that (C)it is spoken against everywhere.”

23 So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, (D)to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus (E)from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And (F)some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 25 So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to [a]our fathers, 26 saying,

(G)‘Go to this people and say:
“Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand;
And seeing you will see, and not perceive;
27 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.” ’

28 “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent (H)to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!” 29 [b]And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.

30 Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, 31 (I)preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.

23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God,(E) and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets(F) he tried to persuade them about Jesus.(G) 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.(H) 25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said(I) through Isaiah the prophet:
