Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

¹⁴But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. ¹⁵For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, ^(A)since it is only the third hour of the day.^[a] ¹⁶But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

¹⁷^(B)“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
^(C)that I will pour out my Spirit ^(D)on all flesh,
and your sons and ^(E)your daughters shall prophesy,
    and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
¹⁸even on my male servants and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and ^(F)they shall prophesy.
¹⁹And I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
²⁰^(G)the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
    before ^(H)the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
²¹And it shall come to pass that ^(I)everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

²²“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, ^(J)a man attested to you by God ^(K)with ^(L)mighty works and wonders and signs that ^(M)God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— ²³this Jesus,^[b] ^(N)delivered up according to ^(O)the definite plan and ^(P)foreknowledge of God, ^(Q)you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. ²⁴^(R)God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because ^(S)it was not possible for him to be held by it. ²⁵For David says concerning him,

^(T)“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
²⁶therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
    my flesh also will dwell ^(U)in hope.
²⁷For you will not abandon my soul to ^(V)Hades,
    ^(W)or let your ^(X)Holy One ^(Y)see corruption.
²⁸You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

²⁹“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about ^(Z)the patriarch David ^(AA)that he both died and ^(AB)was buried, and ^(AC)his tomb is with us to this day. ³⁰^(AD)Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that ^(AE)God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, ³¹he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that ^(AF)he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. ³²This Jesus ^(AG)God raised up, ^(AH)and of that we all are witnesses. ³³^(AI)Being therefore ^(AJ)exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from ^(AK)the Father ^(AL)the promise of the Holy Spirit, ^(AM)he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. ³⁴For ^(AN)David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

^(AO)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
³⁵ until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

³⁶Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that ^(AP)God has made him ^(AQ)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus ^(AR)whom you crucified.”

³⁷Now when ^(AS)they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, ^(AT)what shall we do?” ³⁸And Peter said to them, ^(AU)“Repent and ^(AV)be baptized every one of you ^(AW)in the name of Jesus Christ ^(AX)for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive ^(AY)the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹For ^(AZ)the promise is for you and ^(BA)for your children and for all ^(BB)who are far off, everyone ^(BC)whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” ⁴⁰And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, ^(BD)“Save yourselves from this ^(BE)crooked generation.” ⁴¹So those who received his word were baptized, and ^(BF)there were added that day about three thousand souls.

²And Stephen said:

^(A)“Brothers and fathers, hear me. ^(B)The God ^(C)of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, ^(D)before he lived in Haran, ³and said to him, ^(E)‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ ⁴^(F)Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And ^(G)after his father died, ^(H)God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. ⁵Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised ^(I)to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, ^(J)though he had no child. ⁶And God spoke to this effect—that ^(K)his offspring would ^(L)be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them ^(M)four hundred years. ⁷‘But ^(N)I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out ^(O)and worship me in this place.’ ⁸And ^(P)he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And ^(Q)so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and ^(R)circumcised him on the eighth day, and ^(S)Isaac became the father of Jacob, and ^(T)Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

⁹“And the patriarchs, ^(U)jealous of Joseph, ^(V)sold him into Egypt; but ^(W)God was with him ¹⁰and rescued him out of all his afflictions and ^(X)gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, ^(Y)who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. ¹¹Now ^(Z)there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. ¹²^(AA)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. ¹³And ^(AB)on the second visit ^(AC)Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and ^(AD)Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. ¹⁴And ^(AE)Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, ^(AF)seventy-five persons in all.
