Peter and Cornelius

10 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of (A)what was known as the Italian Cohort, a devout man (B)who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. (C)About the ninth hour of the day[a] (D)he saw clearly in a vision (E)an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms (F)have ascended (G)as a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging (H)with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Peter's Vision

The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, (I)Peter went up (J)on the housetop about (K)the sixth hour[b] to pray. 10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into (L)a trance 11 and saw (M)the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; (N)for I have never eaten anything that is (O)common or (P)unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, (Q)“What God has made clean, do not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

17 Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what (R)the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, (S)the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood at the gate 18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there. 19 And while Peter was pondering (T)the vision, (U)the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. 20 Rise and go down and (V)accompany them without hesitation,[c] for I have sent them.” 21 And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?” 22 And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and (W)God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by (X)a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and (Y)to hear what you have to say.” 23 So he invited them in to be his guests.

The next day he rose and went away with them, and (Z)some of (AA)the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. 24 And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and (AB)fell down at his feet and (AC)worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, (AD)“Stand up; I too am a man.” 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered. 28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew (AE)to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but (AF)God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”

30 And Cornelius said, (AG)“Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at (AH)the ninth hour,[d] and behold, (AI)a man stood before me in bright clothing 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, (AJ)your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

Gentiles Hear the Good News

34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that (AK)God (AL)shows no partiality, 35 but (AM)in every nation anyone who fears him and (AN)does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for (AO)the word that he sent to Israel, (AP)preaching good news of (AQ)peace through Jesus Christ ((AR)he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, (AS)beginning (AT)from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how (AU)God anointed Jesus of Nazareth (AV)with the Holy Spirit and with (AW)power. He went about doing good and healing all (AX)who were oppressed by the devil, (AY)for God was with him. 39 And (AZ)we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. (BA)They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but (BB)God raised him on (BC)the third day and made him to (BD)appear, 41 (BE)not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as (BF)witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And (BG)he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify (BH)that he is the one appointed by God to be judge (BI)of the living and the dead. 43 (BJ)To him (BK)all the prophets bear witness that (BL)everyone who believes in him receives (BM)forgiveness of sins (BN)through his name.”

The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles

44 While Peter was still saying these things, (BO)the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among (BP)the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because (BQ)the gift of the Holy Spirit (BR)was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them (BS)speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47 (BT)“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit (BU)just as we have?” 48 And he (BV)commanded them (BW)to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.

Peter Reports to the Church

11 Now the apostles and (BX)the brothers[e] who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, (BY)the circumcision party[f] criticized him, saying, (BZ)“You went to uncircumcised men and (CA)ate with them.” But Peter began and explained it to them in order: (CB)“I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ 10 This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. 11 And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. 12 And the Spirit told me to go with them, (CC)making no distinction. (CD)These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. 13 And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; 14 (CE)he will declare to you a message by which (CF)you will be saved, you and all your household.’ 15 As I began to speak, (CG)the Holy Spirit fell on them (CH)just as on us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, (CI)‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If then (CJ)God gave (CK)the same gift to them as he gave to us (CL)when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, (CM)who was I (CN)that I could stand in God's way?” 18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they (CO)glorified God, saying, (CP)“Then to the Gentiles also God has (CQ)granted (CR)repentance that leads to life.”

The Church in Antioch

19 (CS)Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists[g] also, (CT)preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And (CU)the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed (CV)turned to the Lord. 22 The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he came and saw (CW)the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord (CX)with steadfast purpose, 24 for he was a good man, (CY)full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people (CZ)were added to the Lord. 25 So Barnabas went to (DA)Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called (DB)Christians.

27 Now in these days (DC)prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 And one of them named (DD)Agabus stood up and foretold (DE)by the Spirit that there would be a great (DF)famine over all the world (this took place in the days of (DG)Claudius). 29 So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, (DH)to send relief to (DI)the brothers[h] living in Judea. 30 (DJ)And they did so, sending it to (DK)the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

James Killed and Peter Imprisoned

12 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed (DL)James the brother of John (DM)with the sword, and when he saw (DN)that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during (DO)the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him (DP)in prison, delivering him over to four (DQ)squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest (DR)prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Peter Is Rescued

Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, (DS)bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, (DT)an angel of the Lord (DU)stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. (DV)He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And (DW)the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and (DX)put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but (DY)thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. (DZ)It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. 11 When Peter (EA)came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that (EB)the Lord has sent his angel and (EC)rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of (ED)John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and (EE)were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, (EF)a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, (EG)in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is (EH)his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But (EI)motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to (EJ)James and to (EK)the brothers.”[i] Then he departed and went to another place.

18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and (EL)ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.

The Death of Herod

20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and (EM)having persuaded Blastus, the king's chamberlain,[j] they asked for peace, because (EN)their country depended on the king's country for food. 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately (EO)an angel of the Lord struck him down, because (EP)he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

24 But (EQ)the word of God increased and multiplied.

25 (ER)And Barnabas and Saul returned from[k] Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them (ES)John, whose other name was Mark.

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

13 Now there were in the church at Antioch (ET)prophets and (EU)teachers, (EV)Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger,[l] Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of (EW)Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, (EX)the Holy Spirit said, (EY)“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul (EZ)for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and (FA)praying they laid their hands on them and (FB)sent them off.

Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus

So, being sent out (FC)by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God (FD)in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had (FE)John to (FF)assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain (FG)magician, (FH)a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. He was with (FI)the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the (FJ)magician (for that is the meaning of his name) (FK)opposed them, seeking to turn (FL)the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, who was also called Paul, (FM)filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You (FN)son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and (FO)villainy, will you not stop (FP)making crooked (FQ)the straight paths of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, (FR)the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking (FS)people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at (FT)the teaching of the Lord.

Paul and Barnabas at Antioch in Pisidia

13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And (FU)John left them and returned (FV)to Jerusalem, 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And (FW)on the Sabbath day (FX)they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After (FY)the reading from (FZ)the Law and the Prophets, (GA)the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any (GB)word of encouragement for the people, say it.” 16 So Paul stood up, and (GC)motioning with his hand said:

“Men of Israel and (GD)you who fear God, listen. 17 (GE)The God of this people Israel (GF)chose our fathers and (GG)made the people great (GH)during their stay in the land of Egypt, and (GI)with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for about (GJ)forty years (GK)he put up with[m] them in the wilderness. 19 And (GL)after destroying (GM)seven nations in the land of Canaan, (GN)he gave them their land as an inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. And after that (GO)he gave them judges until (GP)Samuel the prophet. 21 Then (GQ)they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul (GR)the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And (GS)when he had removed him, (GT)he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, (GU)‘I have found in David the son of Jesse (GV)a man after my heart, (GW)who will do all my will.’ 23 (GX)Of this man's offspring God has brought to Israel (GY)a Savior, Jesus, (GZ)as he promised. 24 Before his coming, (HA)John had proclaimed (HB)a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, (HC)he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you (HD)who fear God, to us has been sent (HE)the message of (HF)this salvation. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because (HG)they did not recognize him nor understand (HH)the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, (HI)fulfilled them by condemning him. 28 And (HJ)though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, (HK)they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 And when (HL)they had carried out all that was written of him, (HM)they took him down from (HN)the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But (HO)God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days (HP)he appeared to those (HQ)who had come up with him (HR)from Galilee to Jerusalem, (HS)who are now (HT)his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news (HU)that what God promised to the fathers, 33 (HV)this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

(HW)“‘You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you.’

34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, (HX)(HY)no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“‘I will give you (HZ)the holy and sure blessings of David.’

35 Therefore he says also in another psalm,

(IA)“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’

36 For David, after he had (IB)served the purpose of God in his own generation, (IC)fell asleep and (ID)was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom (IE)God raised up did not see corruption. 38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, (IF)that through this man (IG)forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him (IH)everyone who believes is freed[n] from everything (II)from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 (IJ)“‘Look, you scoffers,
    be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”

42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and (IK)devout (IL)converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them (IM)to continue in (IN)the grace of God.

44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 (IO)But (IP)when the Jews[o] saw the crowds, they were filled with (IQ)jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, (IR)reviling him. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God (IS)be spoken first to you. (IT)Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves (IU)unworthy of eternal life, behold, we (IV)are turning to the Gentiles. 47 (IW)For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

(IX)“‘I have made you (IY)a light for the Gentiles,
that you may (IZ)bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and (JA)glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 (JB)But the Jews incited the devout (JC)women of high standing and the leading men of the city, (JD)stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and (JE)drove them out of their district. 51 But they (JF)shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled (JG)with joy and (JH)with the Holy Spirit.

Paul and Barnabas at Iconium

14 Now at Iconium (JI)they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed. (JJ)But the (JK)unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against (JL)the brothers.[p] So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for (JM)the Lord, who bore witness to (JN)the word of his grace, (JO)granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the people of the city (JP)were divided; (JQ)some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles. When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, (JR)to mistreat them and (JS)to stone them, they learned of it and (JT)fled to (JU)Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country, and there they continued to preach the gospel.

Paul and Barnabas at Lystra

Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was (JV)crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and (JW)seeing that he had faith to be made well,[q] 10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he (JX)sprang up and began walking. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, (JY)“The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 Barnabas they called (JZ)Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of (KA)Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and (KB)wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they (KC)tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15 “Men, (KD)why are you doing these things? We also are men, (KE)of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that (KF)you should turn from these (KG)vain things to (KH)a living God, (KI)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16 In past generations he (KJ)allowed all the nations (KK)to walk in their own ways. 17 Yet (KL)he did not leave himself without witness, for he (KM)did good by (KN)giving you rains from heaven and (KO)fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with (KP)food and (KQ)gladness.” 18 Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.

Paul Stoned at Lystra

19 (KR)But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, (KS)they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. 21 When they had preached the gospel to that city and had (KT)made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 (KU)strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them (KV)to continue in (KW)the faith, and saying that (KX)through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. 23 And when they had (KY)appointed (KZ)elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting (LA)they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Paul and Barnabas Return to Antioch in Syria

24 Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25 And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia, 26 and from there they sailed to Antioch, (LB)where they had been (LC)commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled. 27 And when they arrived and gathered the church together, (LD)they declared all that God had done with them, and (LE)how he had (LF)opened (LG)a door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they remained no little time with the disciples.

The Jerusalem Council

15 (LH)But some men came down from Judea and were teaching (LI)the brothers, “Unless you are (LJ)circumcised (LK)according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and (LL)debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and (LM)some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to (LN)the apostles and the elders about this question. So, (LO)being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, (LP)describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and (LQ)brought great joy to all (LR)the brothers.[r] (LS)When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and (LT)the apostles and the elders, and (LU)they declared all that God had done with them. But some believers who belonged to (LV)the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, (LW)“It is necessary (LX)to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”

(LY)The (LZ)apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. And after there had been much (MA)debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, (MB)that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear (MC)the word of (MD)the gospel and believe. And God, (ME)who knows the heart, (MF)bore witness to them, (MG)by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and (MH)he made no distinction between us and them, (MI)having cleansed their hearts (MJ)by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why (MK)are you putting God to the test (ML)by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples (MM)that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we (MN)believe that we will be (MO)saved through (MP)the grace of the Lord Jesus, (MQ)just as they will.”

12 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul (MR)as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13 After they finished speaking, (MS)James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14 (MT)Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them (MU)a people for his name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,

16 (MV)“‘After this I will return,
and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen;
I will rebuild its ruins,
     and I will restore it,
17 that the remnant[s] of mankind (MW)may seek the Lord,
and all the Gentiles (MX)who are called by my name,
says the Lord, who makes these things 18 (MY)known from of old.’

19 Therefore (MZ)my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who (NA)turn to God, 20 but should write to them (NB)to abstain from (NC)the things polluted by idols, and from (ND)sexual immorality, and from (NE)what has been strangled, and from (NF)blood. 21 For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, (NG)for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

The Council's Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then it seemed good to (NH)the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called (NI)Barsabbas, and (NJ)Silas, leading men among (NK)the brothers, 23 with the following letter: (NL)“The brothers, both (NM)the apostles and the elders, to the brothers[t] who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, (NN)greetings. 24 Since we have heard that (NO)some persons have gone out from us and (NP)troubled you[u] with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, 25 it has seemed good to us, having come (NQ)to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our (NR)beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 (NS)men who have (NT)risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have therefore sent (NU)Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good (NV)to the Holy Spirit and (NW)to us (NX)to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: 29 (NY)that you abstain from (NZ)what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

30 So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. 32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves (OA)prophets, encouraged and (OB)strengthened (OC)the brothers with many words. 33 And after they had spent some time, they were sent off (OD)in peace by (OE)the brothers to those who had sent them.[v] 35 But (OF)Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Paul and Barnabas Separate

36 And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit (OG)the brothers (OH)in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” 37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them (OI)John called Mark. 38 But Paul thought best not to take with them one (OJ)who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there arose (OK)a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. (OL)Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, (OM)having been commended by (ON)the brothers to (OO)the grace of the Lord. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, (OP)strengthening the churches.

Cornelius Calls for Peter

10 At Caesarea(A) there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing;(B) he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day at about three in the afternoon(C) he had a vision.(D) He distinctly saw an angel(E) of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.

The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering(F) before God.(G) Now send men to Joppa(H) to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with Simon the tanner,(I) whose house is by the sea.”

When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.(J)

Peter’s Vision(K)

About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof(L) to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.(M) 11 He saw heaven opened(N) and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

14 “Surely not, Lord!”(O) Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”(P)

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”(Q)

16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision,(R) the men sent by Cornelius(S) found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.

19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision,(T) the Spirit said(U) to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”(V)

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man,(W) who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”(X) 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers(Y) from Joppa went along.(Z) 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea.(AA) Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”(AB)

27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.(AC) 28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile.(AD) But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.(AE) 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes(AF) stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism(AG) 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.(AH) 36 You know the message(AI) God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news(AJ) of peace(AK) through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.(AL) 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed(AM) Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing(AN) all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.(AO)

39 “We are witnesses(AP) of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,(AQ) 40 but God raised him from the dead(AR) on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people,(AS) but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate(AT) and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people(AU) and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.(AV) 43 All the prophets testify about him(AW) that everyone(AX) who believes(AY) in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”(AZ)

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on(BA) all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter(BB) were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out(BC) even on Gentiles.(BD) 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b](BE) and praising God.

Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.(BF) They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”(BG) 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.(BH) Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

Peter Explains His Actions

11 The apostles and the believers(BI) throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.(BJ) So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers(BK) criticized him and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”(BL)

Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision.(BM) I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’

“I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’

“The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’(BN) 10 This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.

11 “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea(BO) stopped at the house where I was staying. 12 The Spirit told(BP) me to have no hesitation about going with them.(BQ) These six brothers(BR) also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 He told us how he had seen an angel(BS) appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. 14 He will bring you a message(BT) through which you and all your household(BU) will be saved.’

15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on(BV) them as he had come on us at the beginning.(BW) 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with[c] water,(BX) but you will be baptized with[d] the Holy Spirit.’(BY) 17 So if God gave them the same gift(BZ) he gave us(CA) who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”

18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”(CB)

The Church in Antioch

19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed(CC) traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch,(CD) spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus(CE) and Cyrene,(CF) went to Antioch(CG) and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news(CH) about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s hand was with them,(CI) and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.(CJ)

22 News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas(CK) to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done,(CL) he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.(CM) 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit(CN) and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.(CO)

25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus(CP) to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples(CQ) were called Christians first(CR) at Antioch.

27 During this time some prophets(CS) came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus,(CT) stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world.(CU) (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)(CV) 29 The disciples,(CW) as each one was able, decided to provide help(CX) for the brothers and sisters(CY) living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders(CZ) by Barnabas(DA) and Saul.(DB)

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison

12 It was about this time that King Herod(DC) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John,(DD) put to death with the sword.(DE) When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(DF) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(DG) After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(DH)

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(DI)

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(DJ) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel(DK) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(DL)

Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(DM) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(DN) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself(DO) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(DP) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”

12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(DQ) where many people had gathered and were praying.(DR) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(DS) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(DT) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(DU)

16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(DV) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(DW) and the other brothers and sisters(DX) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(DY)

Herod’s Death

Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(DZ) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(EA) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(EB)

21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(EC) of the Lord struck him down,(ED) and he was eaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God(EE) continued to spread and flourish.(EF)

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

25 When Barnabas(EG) and Saul had finished their mission,(EH) they returned from[e] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(EI) 13 Now in the church at Antioch(EJ) there were prophets(EK) and teachers:(EL) Barnabas,(EM) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(EN) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(EO) the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(EP) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(EQ) to which I have called them.”(ER) So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(ES) and sent them off.(ET)

On Cyprus

The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(EU) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(EV) When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(EW) in the Jewish synagogues.(EX) John(EY) was with them as their helper.

They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(EZ) and false prophet(FA) named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul,(FB) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer(FC) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(FD) from the faith.(FE) Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(FF) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(FG) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(FH) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(FI) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(FJ)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(FK) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos,(FL) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(FM) where John(FN) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(FO) On the Sabbath(FP) they entered the synagogue(FQ) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(FR) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(FS) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(FT) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[f](FU) in the wilderness;(FV) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(FW) giving their land to his people(FX) as their inheritance.(FY) 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges(FZ) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(GA) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(GB) and he gave them Saul(GC) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(GD) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(GE) he made David their king.(GF) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(GG) he will do everything I want him to do.’(GH)

23 “From this man’s descendants(GI) God has brought to Israel the Savior(GJ) Jesus,(GK) as he promised.(GL) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(GM) 25 As John was completing his work,(GN) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(GO) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(GP)

26 “Fellow children of Abraham(GQ) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(GR) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(GS) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(GT) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(GU) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(GV) they took him down from the cross(GW) and laid him in a tomb.(GX) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(GY) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(GZ) They are now his witnesses(HA) to our people.

32 “We tell you the good news:(HB) What God promised our ancestors(HC) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(HD) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’[g](HE)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[h](HF)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[i](HG)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(HH) he was buried with his ancestors(HI) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(HJ) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(HK) 39 Through him everyone who believes(HL) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(HM) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’[j](HN)

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(HO) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(HP)

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(HQ) and heaped abuse(HR) on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(HS) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(HT) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you[k] a light for the Gentiles,(HU)
that you[l] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[m](HV)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(HW) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord(HX) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(HY) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(HZ) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(IA) 52 And the disciples(IB) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(IC)

In Iconium

14 At Iconium(ID) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(IE) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(IF) of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(IG) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(IH) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(II) The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(IJ) There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(IK) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(IL) But they found out about it and fled(IM) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach(IN) the gospel.(IO)

In Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(IP) and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(IQ) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(IR) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(IS)

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(IT) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(IU) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(IV) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(IW) like you. We are bringing you good news,(IX) telling you to turn from these worthless things(IY) to the living God,(IZ) who made the heavens and the earth(JA) and the sea and everything in them.(JB) 16 In the past, he let(JC) all nations go their own way.(JD) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(JE) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(JF) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(JG) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

19 Then some Jews(JH) came from Antioch and Iconium(JI) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(JJ) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(JK) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 They preached the gospel(JL) in that city and won a large number(JM) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(JN) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(JO) “We must go through many hardships(JP) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[n](JQ) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(JR) committed them to the Lord,(JS) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(JT) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(JU) where they had been committed to the grace of God(JV) for the work they had now completed.(JW) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(JX) and how he had opened a door(JY) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.(JZ)

The Council at Jerusalem

15 Certain people(KA) came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers:(KB) “Unless you are circumcised,(KC) according to the custom taught by Moses,(KD) you cannot be saved.” This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem(KE) to see the apostles and elders(KF) about this question. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia(KG) and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted.(KH) This news made all the believers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.(KI)

Then some of the believers who belonged to the party(KJ) of the Pharisees(KK) stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”(KL)

The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.(KM) God, who knows the heart,(KN) showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,(KO) just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them,(KP) for he purified their hearts by faith.(KQ) 10 Now then, why do you try to test God(KR) by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke(KS) that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace(KT) of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders(KU) God had done among the Gentiles through them.(KV) 13 When they finished, James(KW) spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[o] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.(KX) 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “‘After this I will return
    and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
    and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[p](KY)
18     things known from long ago.[q](KZ)

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols,(LA) from sexual immorality,(LB) from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.(LC) 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”(LD)

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then the apostles and elders,(LE) with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch(LF) with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas,(LG) men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch,(LH) Syria(LI) and Cilicia:(LJ)

Greetings.(LK)

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.(LL) 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives(LM) for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas(LN) to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit(LO) and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.(LP) You will do well to avoid these things.

Farewell.

30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas,(LQ) who themselves were prophets,(LR) said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace(LS) to return to those who had sent them. [34] [r] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached(LT) the word of the Lord.(LU)

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns(LV) where we preached the word of the Lord(LW) and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark,(LX) with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them(LY) in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas(LZ) and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.(MA) 41 He went through Syria(MB) and Cilicia,(MC) strengthening the churches.(MD)
