Secondo oracolo. Il giusto vivrà per la sua fedeltà
2 Mi metterò di sentinella,
in piedi sulla fortezza,
a spiare, per vedere che cosa mi dirà,
che cosa risponderà ai miei lamenti.
2 Il Signore rispose e mi disse:
«Scrivi la visione
e incidila bene sulle tavolette
perchè la si legga speditamente.
3 E' una visione che attesta un termine,
parla di una scadenza e non mentisce;
se indugia, attendila,
perchè certo verrà e non tarderà».
4 Ecco, soccombe colui che non ha l'animo retto,
mentre il giusto vivrà per la sua fede.
II. LE MALEDIZIONI CONTRO L'OPPRESSORE
Preludio
5 La ricchezza rende malvagi; il superbo non sussisterà;
spalanca come gli inferi le sue fauci
e, come la morte, non si sazia,
attira a sé tutti i popoli,
raduna per sé tutte le genti.
6 Forse che tutti non lo canzoneranno,
non faranno motteggi per lui?
Diranno:
Le cinque imprecazioni
I
Guai a chi accumula ciò che non è suo,
- e fino a quando? -
e si carica di pegni!
7 Forse che non sorgeranno a un tratto i tuoi creditori,
non si sveglieranno i tuoi esattori
e tu diverrai loro preda?
8 Poiché tu hai spogliato molte genti,
gli altri popoli spoglieranno te,
a causa del sangue umano versato,
della violenza fatta alla regione,
alla città e ai suoi abitanti.
II
9 Guai a chi è avido di lucro, sventura per la sua casa,
per mettere il nido in luogo alto,
e sfuggire alla stretta della sventura.
10 Hai decretato il disonore alla tua casa;
hai soppresso popoli numerosi,
hai fatto del male contro te stesso.
11 La pietra infatti griderà dalla parete
e dal tavolato risponderà la trave.
III
12 Guai a chi costruisce una città sul sangue
e fonda un castello sull'iniquità.
13 Non è forse volere del Signore degli eserciti
che i popoli fatichino per il fuoco
e le nazioni si stanchino per un nulla?
14 Poiché, come le acque colmano il mare,
così la terra dovrà riempirsi
di conoscenza della gloria del Signore.
IV
15 Guai a chi fa bere i suoi vicini
versando veleno per ubriacarli
e scoprire le loro nudità.
16 Ti sei saziato di vergogna, non di gloria.
Bevi, e ti colga il capogiro.
Si riverserà su di te il calice della destra del Signore
e la vergogna sopra il tuo onore,
17 poiché lo scempio fatto al Libano ricadrà su di te
e il massacro degli animali ti colmerà di spavento,
a causa del sangue umano versato,
della violenza fatta alla regione,
alla città e a tutti i suoi abitanti.
18 A che giova un idolo
perchè l'artista si dia pena di scolpirlo?
O una statua fusa o un oracolo falso,
perchè l'artista confidi in essi,
scolpendo idoli muti?

19 Guai a chi dice al legno: «Svegliati»,
e alla pietra muta: «Alzati».
Ecco, è ricoperta d'oro e d'argento
ma dentro non c'è soffio vitale.
20 Il Signore risiede nel suo santo tempio.
Taccia, davanti a lui, tutta la terra!

Le juste vivra grâce à sa foi
2 Je me tiendrai ╵à mon poste de garde,
je resterai debout ╵sur le fort du guetteur
et je guetterai pour savoir ╵ce que Dieu me dira,
ce que je répondrai ╵à ma protestation.
2 Et l’Eternel me répondit :
Ecris cette révélation,
et grave-la sur les tablettes,
de sorte que chaque lecteur ╵la lise couramment.
3 Car c’est une révélation ╵qui porte sur un temps fixé,
qui parle de la fin[a]
et n’est pas mensongère.
Si l’Eternel paraît tarder[b], ╵attends-le patiemment,
car il vient sûrement,
il ne tardera pas.
4 Si quelqu’un flanche,
il[c] n’est pas droit de cœur[d]
mais le juste vivra ╵grâce à sa foi[e].
Les cinq malheurs
5 En effet, la richesse décevra[f]
le guerrier orgueilleux, ╵et il ne subsistera pas,
lui qui, tel le séjour des morts, ╵ouvre une large bouche
et qui, comme la mort, ╵n’est jamais rassasié.
Car il ajoute à ses conquêtes ╵nation après nation,
et il rassemble tous les peuples ╵sous sa domination.
6 Mais, un jour, tous ces peuples ╵lanceront contre lui ╵des proverbes moqueurs
et des paroles ironiques.
Malheur aux accapareurs
Et l’on dira :
« Malheur à lui ╵car il amasse des richesses ╵qui ne sont pas à lui.
Jusques à quand ╵cela va-t-il durer ?
Il accumule ╵un lourd fardeau de dettes. »
7 Tes créanciers[g] ╵ne surgiront-ils pas soudain ?
Ils se réveilleront ╵pour te faire trembler
et ils feront de toi leur proie.
8 Toi qui as dépouillé ╵des peuples innombrables,
tu seras dépouillé ╵par le reste de tous les peuples.
Pour avoir répandu ╵le sang humain,
et pour avoir commis ╵des actes de violence
contre le pays de Juda, ╵sa ville et tous ses habitants[h].
Malheur aux malhonnêtes
9 Malheur à qui amasse ╵un profit malhonnête ╵pour toute sa famille,
et cherche ainsi à établir ╵son nid sur les hauteurs
pour le mettre à l’abri ╵de tout malheur.
10 Oui, c’est le déshonneur ╵de ton propre royaume ╵que tu as préparé.
En détruisant de nombreux peuples,
tu t’es fait du tort à toi-même.
11 Car, du sein des murailles, ╵les pierres vont crier ;
de la charpente, ╵les poutres leur feront écho.
Malheur aux violents
12 Malheur à qui bâtit la ville ╵en répandant le sang,
à qui fonde la cité sur le crime !
13 Quand les peuples travaillent ╵pour ce qui périt par le feu,
et quand les nations s’éreintent pour rien[i],
cela ne vient-il pas de l’Eternel, ╵du Seigneur des armées célestes ?
14 Car la terre sera remplie
de connaissance ╵de la gloire de l’Eternel
comme les eaux recouvrent ╵le fond des mers[j].
Malheur à celui qui enivre son prochain
15 Malheur à toi ╵qui forces ton prochain à boire
et qui vides ton outre ╵jusqu’à l’ivresse[k],
pour pouvoir contempler ╵sa nudité.
16 Toi aussi, tu seras ╵rassasié d’infamie ╵au lieu de gloire.
Toi aussi, tu boiras ╵et puis l’on te mettra à nu[l] ╵pour découvrir ╵ton incirconcision ;
ton tour viendra de boire ╵la coupe de colère[m] ╵que l’Eternel ╵te tendra de sa droite.
Le déshonneur ╵recouvrira ta gloire.
17 Tu seras submergé ╵par la violence ╵que tu as exercée ╵contre la forêt du Liban[n].
Le massacre des animaux ╵retombera sur toi
pour t’écraser ;
car tu as répandu ╵le sang humain,
tu as commis ╵des actes de violence ╵contre le pays de Juda,
sa ville et tous ses habitants[o].
Malheur aux idolâtres
18 A quoi sert une idole
sculptée par l’artisan ?
Ou une statue de métal fondu,
qui n’enseigne que le mensonge ?
Car celui qui l’a faite ╵se confie en son œuvre
pour fabriquer ╵une idole muette :
19 oui, malheur à qui dit ╵à un morceau de bois : ╵« Réveille-toi ! »,
à la pierre muette : ╵« Allons, sors du sommeil ! »
Peuvent-ils enseigner ?
Voici, ils sont plaqués ╵d’or et d’argent,
mais il n’y a en eux ╵aucun souffle de vie.
20 L’Eternel, lui, ╵se tient dans son saint Temple.
Que le monde entier fasse ╵silence devant lui !

2 Io starò al mio posto di guardia, mi porrò sulla torre e starò attento per vedere ciò che egli mi dirà e ciò che dovrò rispondere circa la rimostranza fatta.
2 Quindi l'Eterno mi rispose e disse: «Scrivi la visione e incidila su tavole, perché si possa leggere speditamente.
3 Poiché la visione è per un tempo già fissato, ma alla fine parlerà e non mentirà; se tarda, aspettala, perché certamente verrà e non tarderà».
4 Ecco, la sua anima si è inorgoglita in lui, non è retta, ma il giusto vivrà per la sua fede.
5 Inoltre il vino tradisce l'uomo superbo, e cosí non sta a casa. Egli infatti allarga la sua avidità come lo Sceol, ed è come la morte, perché non è mai soddisfatto, ma raduna presso di sé tutte le nazioni e raccoglie intorno a sé tutti i popoli.
6 Tutti questi non inizieranno forse a usare un proverbio contro di lui e un indovinello di scherno nei suoi confronti? Essi diranno: «Guai a chi accumula ciò che non è suo (ma fino a quando?) e a chi si carica di pegni!».
7 Non si leveranno forse improvvisamente i tuoi creditori e non si desteranno i tuoi tormentatori? E tu diventerai loro preda.
8 Poiché tu hai depredato molte nazioni, tutto il resto dei popoli ti deprederà, a motivo del sangue umano versato e della violenza fatta al paese, alle città e a tutti i suoi abitanti.
9 Guai a chi è avido di guadagno malvagio per la sua casa, per porre il suo nido in alto e sfuggire al potere della sventura.
10 Tu hai programmato la vergogna della tua casa, sterminando molti popoli, e hai peccato contro te stesso.
11 Poiché la pietra griderà dalla parete e la trave risponderà dal tavolato.
12 Guai a chi costruisce una città con il sangue e fonda una città con l'iniquità!
13 Ecco, non viene forse dall'Eterno degli eserciti che i popoli si affatichino per il fuoco e le nazioni si stanchino per nulla?
14 Poiché la terra sarà ripiena della conoscenza a della gloria dell'Eterno, come le acque riempiono il mare.
15 Guai a chi dà da bere al suo prossimo, porgendo a lui la propria bottiglia, e lo ubriaca per guardare la sua nudità!
16 Tu sarai saziato di vergogna e non di gloria; bevi anche tu e la tua incirconcisione sia messa a nudo. La coppa della destra dell'Eterno sarà rivolta verso di te e l'ignominia coprirà la tua gloria.
17 Poiché la violenza fatta al Libano ti coprirà, e la distruzione degli animali ti riempirà di terrore, a motivo del sangue umano versato e della violenza fatta al paese, alle città e a tutti i suoi abitanti.
18 A che giova l'immagine scolpita quando il suo artefice l'ha scolpita, o un'immagine fusa che insegna la menzogna, perché l'artefice si confidi nel suo lavoro, fabbricando idoli muti?.
19 Guai a chi dice al legno: «Svegliati!», o alla pietra muta: «Lèvati!». Potrebbe essa insegnare qualcosa? Ecco, è ricoperta d'oro e d'argento, ma in essa non c'è alcun soffio di vita.
20 Ma l'Eterno è nel suo tempio santo; tutta la terra faccia silenzio davanti a lui.

I will look to see what he will say(C) to me,

The Lord’s Answer
2 Then the Lord replied:
“Write(E) down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald[b] may run with it.
3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;(F)
it speaks of the end(G)
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait(H) for it;
it[c] will certainly come
and will not delay.(I)
4 “See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person(J) will live by his faithfulness[d](K)—
5 indeed, wine(L) betrays him;
he is arrogant(M) and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,(N)
he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive(O) all the peoples.
6 “Will not all of them taunt(P) him with ridicule and scorn, saying,
“‘Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
and makes himself wealthy by extortion!(Q)
How long must this go on?’
7 Will not your creditors suddenly arise?
Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
Then you will become their prey.(R)
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
the peoples who are left will plunder you.(S)
For you have shed human blood;(T)
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.(U)
9 “Woe to him who builds(V) his house by unjust gain,(W)
setting his nest(X) on high
to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin(Y) of many peoples,
shaming(Z) your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones(AA) of the wall will cry out,
and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.
12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed(AB)
and establishes a town by injustice!
13 Has not the Lord Almighty determined
that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire,(AC)
that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?(AD)
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory(AE) of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.(AF)
15 “Woe to him who gives drink(AG) to his neighbors,
pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!
16 You will be filled with shame(AH) instead of glory.(AI)
Now it is your turn! Drink(AJ) and let your nakedness be exposed[e]!(AK)
The cup(AL) from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence(AM) you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and your destruction of animals will terrify you.(AN)
For you have shed human blood;(AO)
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.
18 “Of what value(AP) is an idol(AQ) carved by a craftsman?
Or an image(AR) that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
he makes idols that cannot speak.(AS)
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’
Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’(AT)
Can it give guidance?
It is covered with gold and silver;(AU)
there is no breath in it.”(AV)

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
9 Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
10 Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
16 Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the Lord's right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.
17 For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?
19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
