Segen statt Fluch
23 Bileam forderte Balak auf: »Bau mir sieben Altäre und bring mir sieben Stiere und sieben Schafböcke!« 2 Balak tat, was Bileam verlangte. Gemeinsam brachten sie auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Schafbock als Brandopfer dar. 3 Dann sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Bleib du hier bei deinen Opfern! Ich will gehen und sehen, ob der Herr zu mir kommt. Wenn er mir etwas zeigt, werde ich es dir berichten.«
Bileam stieg auf eine kahle Anhöhe, 4 und dort begegnete ihm Gott. Bileam sagte: »Ich habe sieben Altäre für dich aufgebaut und auf jedem einen Stier und einen Schafbock geopfert.« 5 Da ließ Gott ihn wissen, was er reden sollte, und forderte ihn auf: »Nun geh wieder zu Balak und richte ihm meine Botschaft aus.« 6 Bileam kehrte zu Balak zurück, der neben den Brandopfern wartete. Bei ihm standen die führenden Männer der Moabiter. 7 Bileam fing an zu reden:
»Aus dem Land der Aramäer hat Balak mich geholt, aus den Bergen im Osten hat mich der König Moabs gerufen: ›Komm und verfluche für mich das Volk Israel, bring Unheil über die Nachkommen von Jakob.‹
8 Aber wie kann ich jemanden verfluchen, den Gott nicht verflucht? Wie kann ich jemandem Unheil bringen, dem Gott, der Herr, nichts antun will?
9 Von diesem Berg aus kann ich Israel sehen, ich habe es genau im Blick: Dieses Volk wohnt ganz allein und unterscheidet sich von allen anderen Völkern.
10 Wer kann die unendliche Schar der Nachkommen von Jakob zählen? Nicht einmal ein Viertel von Israel lässt sich erfassen! Wenn ich nur eines Tages so in Frieden sterben könnte wie diese aufrichtigen Menschen, wenn mein Ende nur dem ihren gleichen würde!«
11 Da rief Balak: »Was tust du mir an? Ich habe dich geholt, damit du meine Feinde verfluchst. Und nun segnest du sie!« 12 Bileam erwiderte: »Muss ich nicht genau das sagen, was der Herr mir aufträgt?«
13 Balak forderte ihn auf: »Komm mit, wir gehen an einen anderen Ort. Von dort kannst du zwar auch nur einen Teil des israelitischen Lagers sehen, aber trotzdem sollst du noch einmal versuchen, das Volk zu verfluchen.« 14 Er brachte Bileam auf den Gipfel des Berges Pisga, wo die Wachposten standen. Wieder baute er sieben Altäre und opferte auf jedem einen Stier und einen Schafbock. 15 Bileam sagte zu Balak: »Warte hier bei den Altären, ich will ein Stück weggehen, um dem Herrn zu begegnen.«
Der zweite Segen
16 Wieder kam der Herr zu Bileam und ließ ihn wissen, was er sagen sollte. Dann schickte er ihn zu Balak zurück, 17 der mit den führenden Männern Moabs bei den Altären wartete. Balak fragte Bileam: »Was hat der Herr dir gesagt?« 18 Bileam antwortete:
»Pass auf, Balak, du Sohn von Zippor, und hör zu; achte genau auf meine Worte!
19 Gott ist kein Mensch, der lügt. Er ist nicht wie einer von uns, der seine Versprechen bald wieder bereut. Was er sagt, das tut er, und was er ankündigt, das führt er aus.
20 Begreif doch: Ich habe den Auftrag zu segnen. Und wenn Gott jemandem seinen Segen geschenkt hat, kann ich es nicht wieder rückgängig machen.
21 Er entdeckt keine Schuld bei den Nachkommen von Jakob, er findet nichts Schlechtes an den Israeliten.[a] Der Herr, ihr Gott, ist bei ihnen, sie feiern ihn als ihren König.
22 Er hat sie aus Ägypten hierhergeführt, er macht sie stark wie einen wilden Stier.
23 Gegen die Nachkommen von Jakob hilft keine Verwünschung, kein Zauberspruch kann Israel etwas anhaben. Darum sagt man staunend über Israel: ›Seht, was Gott für sie getan hat!‹
24 Israel steht auf wie ein Löwe, es erhebt sich wie eine Löwin. Dieses Volk ruht nicht, bevor es seine Beute verzehrt und das Blut seiner Opfer getrunken hat.«
25 Da rief Balak: »Jetzt ist es genug! Wenn du sie schon nicht verfluchst, dann hör wenigstens auf, sie zu segnen!« 26 Doch Bileam erwiderte: »Habe ich dir nicht erklärt, dass ich weitergeben werde, was der Herr mir sagt?«
27 Balak antwortete: »Komm, ich bringe dich an einen anderen Ort. Vielleicht gefällt er Gott besser, und er lässt dich den Fluch endlich aussprechen.« 28 Er nahm Bileam mit auf die Spitze des Berges Peor, von wo aus man die Jordan-Ebene überblicken konnte. 29 Auch hier forderte Bileam den König auf, sieben Altäre zu bauen und ebenso viele Stiere und Schafböcke bereitzustellen. 30 Balak gehorchte und opferte die Tiere.

Balaam’s First Message
23 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams(A) for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(B)
3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.(C) Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4 God met with him,(D) and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth(E) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”(F)
6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.(G) 7 Then Balaam(H) spoke his message:(I)
“Balak brought me from Aram,(J)
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.(K)
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’(L)
8 How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?(M)
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?(N)
9 From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.(O)
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.(P)
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob(Q)
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,(R)
and may my final end be like theirs!(S)”
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(T) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(U)
12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(V)
Balaam’s Second Message
13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(W) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(X) And from there, curse them for me.(Y)” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(Z) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(AA)
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(AB) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(AC) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18 Then he spoke his message:(AD)
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.(AE)
19 God is not human,(AF) that he should lie,(AG)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(AH)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(AI) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(AJ)
he has blessed,(AK) and I cannot change it.(AL)
21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(AM)
no misery observed[a] in Israel.(AN)
The Lord their God is with them;(AO)
the shout of the King(AP) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(AQ)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(AR)
23 There is no divination against[b] Jacob,
no evil omens(AS) against[c] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(AT)
they rouse themselves like a lion(AU)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(AV) of its victims.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(AW)
Balaam’s Third Message
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place.(AX) Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me(AY) from there.” 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,(AZ) overlooking the wasteland.
29 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(BA)

23 Bil‘am said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare me seven bulls and seven rams here.” 2 Balak did as Bil‘am said; then Balak and Bil‘am offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 3 Bil‘am said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering while I go off; maybe Adonai will come and meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you.” He went off to a bare hill. 4 God met Bil‘am, who said to him, “I prepared the seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.” 5 Then Adonai put a word in Bil‘am’s mouth and said, “Go on back to Balak, and speak as I tell you.” 6 He went back to him, and there, standing by his burnt offering, he with all the princes of Mo’av, 7 he made his pronouncement:
“Balak, the king of Mo’av,
brings me from Aram, from the eastern hills, saying,
‘Come, curse Ya‘akov for me;
come and denounce Isra’el.’
8 “How am I to curse
those whom God has not cursed?
How am I to denounce
those whom Adonai has not denounced?
9 “From the top of the rocks I see them,
from the hills I behold them —
yes, a people that will dwell alone
and not think itself one of the nations.
10 “Who has counted the dust of Ya‘akov
or numbered the ashes of Isra’el?
May I die as the righteous die!
May my end be like theirs!”
11 Balak said to Bil‘am, “What have you done to me?! To curse my enemies is why I brought you; and, here, you have totally blessed them!” 12 He answered, “Mustn’t I take care to say just what Adonai puts in my mouth?”
(LY: v) 13 Balak said to him, “All right, come with me to another place where you can see them. You will see only some of them, not all; but you can curse them for me from there.” 14 He took him through the field of Tzofim to the top of the Pisgah Range, built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 Bil‘am said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I go over there for a meeting.” 16 Adonai met Bil‘am, put a word in his mouth and said, “Go on back to Balak, and speak as I tell you.” 17 He came to him and stood by his burnt offering, with all the princes of Mo’av. Balak asked him, “What did Adonai say?” 18 Then Bil‘am made his pronouncement:
“Get up, Balak, and listen!
Turn your ears to me, son of Tzippor!
19 “God is not a human who lies
or a mortal who changes his mind.
When he says something, he will do it;
when he makes a promise, he will fulfill it.
20 Look, I am ordered to bless;
when he blesses, I can’t reverse it.
21 “No one has seen guilt in Ya‘akov,
or perceived perversity in Isra’el;
Adonai their God is with them
and acclaimed as king among them.
22 “God, who brought them out of Egypt,
gives them the strength of a wild ox;
23 thus one can’t put a spell on Ya‘akov,
no magic will work against Isra’el.
It can now be said of Ya‘akov and Isra’el,
‘What is this that God has done?!’
24 “Here is a people rising up like a lioness;
like a lion he rears himself up —
he will not lie down till he eats up the prey
and drinks the blood of the slain.”
25 Balak said to Bil‘am, “Obviously, you won’t curse them. But at least don’t bless them!” 26 However, Bil‘am answered Balak, “Didn’t I warn you that I must do everything Adonai says?”
(RY: vii, LY: vi) 27 Balak said to Bil‘am, “Come, I will take you now to another place; maybe it will please God for you to curse them for me from there.” 28 Balak took Bil‘am to the top of P‘or, overlooking the desert. 29 Bil‘am said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare me seven bulls and seven rams.” 30 Balak did as Bil‘am said and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

The Prophecies of Balaam
23 Then Balaam said to Balak, (A)“Build seven altars for me here, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”
2 And Balak did just as Balaam had spoken, and Balak and Balaam (B)offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 3 Then Balaam said to Balak, (C)“Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the Lord will come (D)to meet me, and whatever He shows me I will tell you.” So he went to a desolate height. 4 (E)And God met Balaam, and he said to Him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered on each altar a bull and a ram.”
5 Then the Lord (F)put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” 6 So he returned to him, and there he was, standing by his burnt offering, he and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he (G)took up his [a]oracle and said:
“Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram,
From the mountains of the east.
(H)‘Come, curse Jacob for me,
And come, (I)denounce Israel!’
8 “How(J) shall I curse whom God has not cursed?
