Bileams Segen über Israel — erster und zweiter Spruch
23 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre, und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
2 Und Balak machte es so, wie es Bileam ihm sagte. Und Balak und Bileam opferten auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.
3 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Tritt zu deinem Brandopfer! Ich will dorthin gehen. Vielleicht begegnet mir der Herr, und was er mich sehen lassen wird, das werde ich dir verkünden! Und er ging hin auf eine kahle Höhe.
4 Und Gott begegnete dem Bileam. Er aber sprach zu ihm: Die sieben Altäre habe ich errichtet und auf jedem einen Stier und einen Widder geopfert.
5 Der Herr aber legte Bileam ein Wort in den Mund und sprach: Kehre um zu Balak, und so sollst du reden!
6 Und er kehrte zu ihm zurück, und siehe, da stand er bei seinem Brandopfer, er und alle Fürsten der Moabiter.
7 Da begann er seinen Spruch und sprach:
»Aus Aram hat mich Balak herbeigeführt, der König der Moabiter von den Bergen des Ostens: Komm, verfluche mir Jakob, komm und verwünsche Israel!
8 Wie sollte ich den verfluchen, den Gott nicht verflucht? Wie sollte ich den verwünschen, den der Herr nicht verwünscht?
9 Denn von den Felsengipfeln sehe ich ihn, und von den Hügeln schaue ich ihn. Siehe, ein Volk, das abgesondert wohnt und nicht unter die Heiden gerechnet wird.
10 Wer kann den Staub Jakobs zählen und die Zahl des vierten Teiles von Israel? Meine Seele sterbe den Tod der Gerechten, und mein Ende soll dem ihren gleichen!«
11 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: Was hast du mir angetan? Ich habe dich holen lassen, dass du meine Feinde verfluchst, und siehe, du hast sie sogar gesegnet!
12 Er antwortete und sprach: Muss ich nicht darauf achten, nur das zu reden, was mir der Herr in den Mund gelegt hat?
13 Balak sprach zu ihm: Komm doch mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo aus du es sehen kannst. Nur seinen äußersten Teil sollst du sehen und sollst es nicht ganz sehen; von da aus verfluche es mir!
14 Und er nahm ihn [mit sich] zu dem Späherfeld, auf die Höhe des Pisga, und er baute sieben Altäre und opferte auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.
15 Und er sprach zu Balak: Tritt hier zu deinem Brandopfer; ich aber will dort eine Begegnung suchen.
16 Und der Herr begegnete dem Bileam und legte ihm ein Wort in seinen Mund und sprach: Kehre um zu Balak, und so sollst du reden!
17 Und als er wieder zu ihm kam, siehe, da stand er bei seinem Brandopfer samt den Fürsten der Moabiter. Und Balak sprach zu ihm: Was hat der Herr gesagt?
18 Da begann er seinen Spruch und sprach: »Steh auf, Balak, und höre! Leihe mir dein Ohr, du Sohn Zippors!
19 Gott ist nicht ein Mensch, dass er lüge, noch ein Menschenkind, dass ihn etwas gereuen würde. Was er gesagt hat, sollte er es nicht tun? Was er geredet hat, sollte er es nicht ausführen?
20 Siehe, zu segnen habe ich empfangen; Er hat gesegnet, und ich kann es nicht abwenden!
21 Er schaut kein Unrecht in Jakob, und er sieht kein Unheil in Israel. Der Herr, sein Gott, ist mit ihm, und man jubelt dem König zu in seiner Mitte.
22 Gott hat sie aus Ägypten geführt; seine Kraft ist wie die eines Büffels.
23 So hilft denn keine Zauberei gegen Jakob und keine Wahrsagerei gegen Israel. Zu seiner Zeit wird man von Jakob sagen und von Israel: Was hat Gott [Großes] getan!
24 Siehe, welch ein Volk! Wie eine Löwin wird es aufstehen und wie ein Löwe sich erheben. Es wird sich nicht legen, bis es den Raub verzehrt und das Blut der Erschlagenen getrunken hat!«
Die weiteren Weissagungen Bileams
25 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: Wenn du es nicht verfluchen kannst, so sollst du es auch nicht segnen!
26 Bileam aber antwortete und sprach zu Balak: Habe ich nicht zu dir geredet und gesagt: Alles, was der Herr sagen wird, das werde ich tun?
27 Balak sprach zu Bileam: Komm doch, ich will dich an einen anderen Ort führen; vielleicht wird es in Gottes Augen recht sein, dass du sie mir dort verfluchst!
28 Und Balak nahm Bileam [mit sich] auf den Gipfel des Peor, der auf die Wüste herunterschaut.
29 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
30 Und Balak tat, wie Bileam sagte; und er opferte auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.

2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the Lord will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.
4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.
5 And the Lord put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.
8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?
9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!
11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the Lord hath put in my mouth?
13 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.
14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
15 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the Lord yonder.
16 And the Lord met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.
17 And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the Lord spoken?
18 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
20 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.
21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the Lord his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.
23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.
26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the Lord speaketh, that I must do?
27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.
28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward jeshimon.
29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.
30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Balaam’s First Message
23 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams(A) for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(B)
3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.(C) Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4 God met with him,(D) and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth(E) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”(F)
6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.(G) 7 Then Balaam(H) spoke his message:(I)
“Balak brought me from Aram,(J)
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.(K)
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’(L)
8 How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?(M)
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?(N)
9 From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.(O)
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.(P)
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob(Q)
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,(R)
and may my final end be like theirs!(S)”
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(T) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(U)
12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(V)
Balaam’s Second Message
13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(W) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(X) And from there, curse them for me.(Y)” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(Z) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(AA)
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(AB) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(AC) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18 Then he spoke his message:(AD)
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.(AE)
19 God is not human,(AF) that he should lie,(AG)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(AH)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(AI) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(AJ)
he has blessed,(AK) and I cannot change it.(AL)
21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(AM)
no misery observed[a] in Israel.(AN)
The Lord their God is with them;(AO)
the shout of the King(AP) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(AQ)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(AR)
23 There is no divination against[b] Jacob,
no evil omens(AS) against[c] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(AT)
they rouse themselves like a lion(AU)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(AV) of its victims.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(AW)
Balaam’s Third Message
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place.(AX) Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me(AY) from there.” 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,(AZ) overlooking the wasteland.
29 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(BA)
