Бегство Илии от Иезавели
19 Ахав рассказал Иезавели обо всем, что сделал Илия, и о том, как он перебил всех пророков Баала мечом. 2 Иезавель послала к Илии вестника, чтобы сказать:
– Пусть боги сурово накажут меня[a], если завтра к этому времени я не сделаю с тобой того же, что ты сделал с пророками.
3 Он испугался и[b] бежал, спасая свою жизнь. Добравшись до Вирсавии, что в Иудее, он оставил там слугу, 4 а сам ушел в пустыню на расстояние в день пути. Он пришел, сел под одиноким дроковым кустом и молился о смерти.
– Довольно уже, Господи, – говорил он, – забери мою жизнь, ведь я не лучше своих предков.
5 Затем он лег под дроковым кустом и уснул. Внезапно ангел коснулся его и сказал:
– Встань и поешь.
6 Он огляделся – и вот, у его головы лепешка, испеченная на горячих углях, и кувшин воды. Он поел, попил и лег снова.
7 Ангел Господень пришел во второй раз, коснулся его и сказал:
– Встань и поешь, иначе дорога будет для тебя слишком тяжела.
8 Он встал, поел и попил. Подкрепившись той пищей, он шел сорок дней и сорок ночей, пока не достиг Хорива, Божьей горы. 9 Там он вошел в пещеру и заночевал в ней.
Господь является Илии
И вот, к нему было слово Господа:
– Что ты здесь делаешь, Илия?
10 Он ответил:
– Я ревностно служил Господу, Богу Сил[c]. Израильтяне отвергли завет с Тобой, разрушили Твои жертвенники, а Твоих пророков убили мечом. Остался лишь я один, и они пытаются убить и меня.
11 Господь сказал:
– Выйди и встань на горе перед Господом. Господь пройдет мимо!
И вот, страшный, могучий ветер расколол горы и раздробил перед Господом скалы, но в ветре Господа не было. После ветра было землетрясение, но в землетрясении Господа не было. 12 После землетрясения прошел огонь, но в огне Господа не было. После огня раздался мягкий шепот[d]. 13 Услышав его, Илия закрыл лицо плащом, вышел и встал у входа в пещеру. И был к нему голос, который сказал ему:
– Что ты здесь делаешь, Илия?
14 Он ответил:
– Я ревностно служил Господу, Богу Сил. Израильтяне отвергли завет с Тобой, разрушили Твои жертвенники, а Твоих пророков убили мечом. Остался лишь я один, и они пытаются убить и меня.
15 Господь сказал ему:
– Возвращайся дорогой, которой пришел, и иди в пустыню Дамаска. Придя туда, помажь Хазаила в цари над Арамом. 16 Еще помажь Ииуя, сына Нимши, в цари Израиля, а Елисея, сына Шафата, из Авел-Мехолы, в пророки вместо себя. 17 Ииуй предаст смерти всякого, кто уйдет живым от меча Хазаила, а Елисей предаст смерти всякого, кто уйдет живым от меча Ииуя[e]. 18 Но Я сохранил в Израиле семь тысяч человек, колени которых не склонились перед Баалом и которые не целовали его статуи.

Elijah Flees to Horeb
19 Now Ahab told Jezebel(A) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed(B) all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,(C) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”(D)
3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran(E) for his life.(F) When he came to Beersheba(G) in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush,(H) sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life;(I) I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.(J)
All at once an angel(K) touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty(L) days and forty nights until he reached Horeb,(M) the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave(N) and spent the night.
The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”(O)
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous(P) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,(Q) torn down your altars,(R) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(S) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain(T) in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”(U)
Then a great and powerful wind(V) tore the mountains apart and shattered(W) the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire,(X) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.(Y) 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face(Z) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(AA) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael(AB) king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint(AC) Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha(AD) son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah(AE) to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael,(AF) and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.(AG) 18 Yet I reserve(AH) seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed(AI) him.”
The Call of Elisha
19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak(AJ) around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,”(AK) he said, “and then I will come with you.”
“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen(AL) and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.(AM)

Elías en el Horeb

— Que los dioses me castiguen, si mañana a estas horas no hago contigo lo que les has hecho a ellos.
3 Elías se asustó y emprendió la huida para ponerse a salvo. Cuando llegó a Berseba de Judá, dejó allí a su criado. 4 Luego siguió por el desierto una jornada de camino y al final se sentó bajo una retama y se deseó la muerte diciendo:
— ¡Basta ya, Señor! Quítame la vida, pues yo no valgo más que mis antepasados.
5 Se echó bajo la retama y se quedó dormido. Pero un ángel lo tocó y le dijo:
— Levántate y come.
6 Elías miró y a su cabecera vio una torta de pan cocido sobre piedras calientes junto a una jarra de agua. Comió, bebió y volvió a acostarse. 7 Pero el ángel del Señor lo tocó de nuevo y le dijo:
— Levántate y come, porque el camino se te hará muy largo. 8 Elías se levantó, comió y bebió; y con la fuerza de aquella comida caminó durante cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta el Horeb, el monte de Dios. 9 Una vez allí, se metió en una cueva para pasar la noche. El Señor le dirigió la palabra, preguntándole:
— ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?
10 Él contestó:
— Ardo en celo por el Señor, Dios del universo, porque los israelitas han roto tu alianza, han derribado tus altares y han asesinado a filo de espada a tus profetas. Sólo he quedado yo y me andan buscando para matarme.
11 El Señor le dijo:
— Sal y quédate de pie sobre el monte ante el Señor, que el Señor va a pasar.
Vino un viento huracanado y violento que sacudía los montes y quebraba las peñas delante del Señor, pero el Señor no estaba en el viento. Tras el viento hubo un terremoto, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el terremoto. 12 Tras el terremoto hubo un fuego, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el fuego. Tras el fuego se oyó un ligero susurro, 13 y al escucharlo, Elías se tapó el rostro con su manto, salió de la cueva y se quedó de pie a la entrada. Entonces oyó una voz que le preguntaba:
— ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?
14 Él contestó:
— Ardo en celo por el Señor, Dios del universo, porque los israelitas han roto tu alianza, han derribado tus altares y han asesinado a filo de espada a tus profetas. Sólo he quedado yo y me andan buscando para matarme.
15 El Señor le dijo:
— Anda, vuelve por el camino por el que has venido hacia el desierto en dirección a Damasco. Cuando llegues, unge a Jazael como rey de Siria; 16 unge a Jehú, hijo de Nimsí, como rey de Israel; y unge a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, de Abel Mejolá, como profeta sucesor tuyo. 17 A quien escape de la espada de Jazael, lo matará Jehú; y a quien escape de la espada de Jehú, lo matará Eliseo. 18 Sólo dejaré en Israel un resto de siete mil: aquellos que no doblaron la rodilla ante Baal, ni lo besaron con sus labios.
La vocación de Eliseo
19 Elías se marchó de allí y encontró a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, que estaba arando con doce yuntas de bueyes e iba detrás de la última. Elías pasó junto a él y lo cubrió con su manto. 20 Eliseo dejó los bueyes, corrió detrás de Elías y le dijo:
— Déjame despedirme de mis padres. Luego te sigo.
Elías le respondió:
— Vete y vuelve. Yo no te lo impido.
21 Eliseo se volvió, agarró la yunta de bueyes y los sacrificó. Luego asó la carne con los aperos de los bueyes e invitó a comer a la gente. Después emprendió la marcha tras Elías y se puso a su servicio.

Elijah Escapes from Jezebel
19 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had (A)executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, (B)“So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a [a]broom tree. And he (C)prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”
5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an [b]angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on [c]coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the [d]angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and (D)forty nights as far as (E)Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 So he said, (F)“I have been very (G)zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and (H)killed Your prophets with the sword. (I)I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
God’s Revelation to Elijah
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand (J)on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord (K)passed by, and (L)a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [e]a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that (M)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. (N)Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 (O)And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; (P)and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint (Q)Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And (R)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 (S)It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will (T)kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, (U)Elisha will kill. 18 (V)Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, (W)and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Elisha Follows Elijah
19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his (X)mantle on him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, (Y)“Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”
And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and (Z)boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.
