Reality of Paul’s Authority

(A)Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? (B)If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even [a]so (C)we are Christ’s. For even if I should boast somewhat more (D)about our authority, which the Lord gave [b]us for [c]edification and not for your destruction, (E)I shall not be ashamed— lest I seem to terrify you by letters. 10 “For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but (F)his bodily presence is weak, and his (G)speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such we will also be in deed when we are present.

Limits of Paul’s Authority

12 (H)For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 (I)We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), (J)for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, (K)in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.

17 But (L)“he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.” 18 For (M)not he who commends himself is approved, but (N)whom the Lord commends.

The things in presence do ye see? if any one hath trusted in himself to be Christ's, this let him reckon again from himself, that according as he is Christ's, so also we [are] Christ's;

for even if also anything more abundantly I shall boast concerning our authority, that the Lord gave us for building up, and not for casting you down, I shall not be ashamed;

that I may not seem as if I would terrify you through the letters,

10 `because the letters indeed -- saith one -- [are] weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'

11 This one -- let him reckon thus: that such as we are in word, through letters, being absent, such also, being present, [we are] in deed.

12 For we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,

13 and we in regard to the unmeasured things will not boast ourselves, but after the measure of the line that the God of measure did appoint to us -- to reach even unto you;

14 for not as not reaching to you do we stretch ourselves overmuch, for even unto you did we come in the good news of the Christ,

15 not boasting of the things not measured, in other men's labours, and having hope -- your faith increasing -- in you to be enlarged, according to our line -- into abundance,

16 in the [places] beyond you to proclaim good news, not in another's line in regard to the things made ready, to boast;

17 and he who is boasting -- in the Lord let him boast;

18 for not he who is commending himself is approved, but he whom the Lord doth commend.

[a](A)You are looking at [b]things as they are outwardly. (B)If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, have him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, (C)so too are we. For if (D)I boast somewhat [c]more about our (E)authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, [d]for I do not want to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his [e]personal presence is (F)unimpressive and (G)his speech contemptible.” 11 Have such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

12 For we do not presume to rank or compare ourselves with [f]some of those who (H)commend themselves; but when they [g]measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding. 13 But we will not boast (I)beyond our measure, but [h](J)within the measure of the [i]domain which God assigned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for (K)we were the first to come even as far as you in the (L)gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting (M)beyond our measure, that is, in (N)other people’s labors, but with the hope that as (O)your faith grows, we will be, [j]within our [k]domain, (P)enlarged even more by you, 16 so as to (Q)preach the gospel even to (R)the regions beyond you, and not to boast [l](S)in what has been accomplished in the domain of another. 17 But (T)the one who boasts is to boast in the Lord. 18 For it is not the one who (U)commends himself that is approved, but the one (V)whom the Lord commends.

You are judging by appearances.[a](A) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(B) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(C) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(D) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(E) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(F) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(G) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(H) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(I) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(J) with the gospel of Christ.(K) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(L) by boasting of work done by others.(M) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(N) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(O) in the regions beyond you.(P) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[b](Q) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(R) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(S)
