2 Samuel 6:12-19
New English Translation

12 King David was told,[a] “The Lord has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God.” So David went and joyfully brought the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David. 13 Those who carried the ark of the Lord took six steps and then David[b] sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf. 14 Now David, wearing a linen ephod, was dancing with all his strength before the Lord.[c] 15 David and all Israel[d] were bringing up the ark of the Lord, shouting and blowing trumpets.[e]

16 As the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him.[f] 17 They brought the ark of the Lord and put it in its place[g] in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 19 He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel,[h] both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake,[i] and a raisin cake. Its exact meaning is uncertain, although the context indicates that it was a food of some sort (cf. KJV “a good piece of flesh”; NRSV “a portion of meat”). The translation adopted here (“date cake”) follows the lead of the Greek translations of the LXX, Aquila, and Symmachus (cf. NASB, NIV, NLT).

12 Then it was told to King David, saying, “Yahweh has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” So (A)David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into (B)the city of David with gladness. 13 And so it happened, that when those (C)who were carrying the ark of Yahweh had gone six paces, he sacrificed an (D)ox and a fatling. 14 And (E)David was dancing before Yahweh with all his strength, and David was (F)girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of Yahweh with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.

16 Then it happened as the ark of Yahweh came into the city of David, that (G)Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Yahweh; and she despised him in her heart.

17 And they brought in the ark of Yahweh and placed it (H)in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and (I)David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh. 18 Then David completed offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings. And (J)he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh of hosts. 19 And he apportioned to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people went each to his house.
