But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (A)Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house (B)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (C)in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where (D)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (E)any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded (F)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (G)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. (H)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel (I)and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place (J)and be disturbed no more. (K)And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 (L)from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And (M)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that (N)the Lord will make you a house. 12 (O)When your days are fulfilled and (P)you lie down with your fathers, (Q)I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (R)He shall build a house for my name, and (S)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (T)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, (U)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (V)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (W)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (X)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[c] (Y)Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

But in the same night, the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, “Go and say to My servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: “(A)Should you build Me a house for My dwelling? For (B)I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; rather, I have been moving about (C)in a tent, that is, in a dwelling place. (D)Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (E)whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’

God’s Covenant with David

Now then, this is what you shall say to My servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(F)I Myself took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (G)to be leader over My people Israel. And (H)I have been with you wherever you have gone, and (I)have eliminated all your enemies from you; I will also make a great name for you, like the names of the great men who [a]are on the earth. 10 And I will establish a place for My people Israel, and (J)will plant them, so that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, (K)nor will [b]malicious people oppress them anymore as previously, 11 even (L)from the day that I appointed judges over My people Israel; and (M)I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that (N)the Lord will make a house for you. 12 (O)When your days are finished and you [c](P)lie down with your fathers, (Q)I will raise up your [d]descendant after you, who will come from [e]you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (R)He shall build a house for My name, and (S)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (T)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (U)when he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and with strokes of sons of mankind, 15 but My favor shall not depart from him, (V)as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from you. 16 (W)Your house and your kingdom shall endure before [f]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all of this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(A) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(B) I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(C) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(D) as my dwelling.(E) Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(F) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(G) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(H) of cedar?(I)”’

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(J) and appointed you ruler(K) over my people Israel.(L) I have been with you wherever you have gone,(M) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(N) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(O) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(P) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(Q) Wicked(R) people will not oppress them anymore,(S) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](T) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(U)

“‘The Lord declares(V) to you that the Lord himself will establish(W) a house(X) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(Y) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(Z) and I will establish his kingdom.(AA) 13 He is the one who will build a house(AB) for my Name,(AC) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(AD) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(AE) When he does wrong, I will punish him(AF) with a rod(AG) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(AH) as I took it away from Saul,(AI) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne(AJ) will be established(AK) forever.(AL)’”

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
