18 さて、ダビデは軍を再編成し、連隊長や中隊長を任命しました。 2 全軍を三隊に分け、ヨアブと、その兄弟で同じくツェルヤの息子アビシャイと、ガテ人イタイにそれぞれ指揮させました。王は自ら陣頭に立ちたいと考えていましたが、家来たちの猛反対に会いました。 3 「それは断じてなりません。私たちが逃げ出そうと、半数が死のうと、彼らにはどうでもよいことなのです。目当てはあなたお一人なのですから。あなたは、私たちの一万人にも当たるお方です。ですから今は、この町にとどまって、必要な時に助けてくださればよろしいのです。」
4 ついに王も、「わかった。言うとおりにしよう」とうなずきました。王は町の門に立って、全軍が出陣するのを見送りました。 5 王はヨアブ、アビシャイ、イタイに、「私に免じて、あの若いアブシャロムには、手ごころを加えてやってくれ」と命じました。全兵士は、王が指揮官たちにそう命じるのを聞いていました。
6 こうして、戦いはエフライムの森で始まったのです。 7 イスラエル軍はダビデ軍に撃退され、ばたばたと兵士が倒れて、その日のうちに、なんと二万人がいのちを落としました。 8 戦いはこの地方一帯に広がり、殺された者よりも、森で行方不明になった者のほうが、はるかに多い有様でした。
9 戦いの最中、アブシャロムは幾人かのダビデ軍兵士に出くわしました。らばに乗って逃げていたアブシャロムは、大きな樫の木の枝が覆いかぶさる下を通り抜ける時、髪を枝に引っかけてしまいました。らばはそのまま行ってしまい、アブシャロムだけが宙づりになったのです。 10 ダビデの兵士の一人がそれを見て、ヨアブに知らせました。
11 ヨアブは、「な、なんだと！ やつを見つけて、どうして殺さなかったのだ。たくさんの褒美を取らせ、将校にでも取り立ててやったのに」と言いました。
12 「どれほどご褒美が頂けましょうとも、そんなことはごめんです。私たちはみな、王様が指揮官のお三方に、『私に免じて、若いアブシャロムに手を下すのだけはやめてくれ』とお頼みになったのを聞いたのですから。 13 それに、もし私が命令に背いて王子様を殺したとして、そのことが王様に知れた場合、将軍、あなた様が真っ先に私を非難なさるのではありませんか？」
14 「たわごとを言うな！」こう言い捨てると、ヨアブは三本の槍を取り、宙づりになったまま息も絶え絶えになっていたアブシャロムの心臓を突き刺しました。 15 ヨアブ直属の若いよろい持ち十人も、アブシャロムを取り囲み、とどめを刺しました。 16 ヨアブはラッパを吹き鳴らし、イスラエル軍追撃をやめて、兵を引き揚げました。 17 人々はアブシャロムの死体を森の深い穴に投げ込み、石を山のように積み上げました。イスラエル軍兵士は、てんでに自分たちの天幕に逃げ帰っていました。
18 生前アブシャロムは、「私には跡取りの息子がいないから」と言って、王の谷に自分の記念碑を建てていました。彼が、「アブシャロムの記念碑」と名づけたそれは、今も残っています。
19 ツァドクの子アヒマアツが申し出ました。「この吉報を王様にお伝えする役目を、ぜひとも私に仰せつけください。主が敵アブシャロムの手から救い出してくださったのですから。」
20 「いかんいかん。王子が死んだことなど、良い知らせとは言えない。おまえには、また別の機会に働いてもらおう。」
21 こう言うと、ヨアブは一人のクシュ人に命じました。「さあ、行ってくれ。見たとおりを王様にお知らせするのだ。」男はヨアブに一礼すると、すぐに走りだしました。
22 それでも、アヒマアツはあきらめません。「どうか、私も行かせてください」と、必死にヨアブにすがります。「困ったやつだな。今は、おまえの出る幕ではないのだ。もう何も王にお知らせすることはない。」
23 「わかっております。しかし、とにかく行かせてほしいのです。」
あまりの熱心さに、ついにヨアブも、「まあ、よい。そんなに行きたければ行くがいい」と折れました。するとアヒマアツは、平原を通り抜けて近回りをし、先のクシュ人よりも先に着いたのです。 24 ダビデは町の門のところに腰かけていました。見張りが城壁のてっぺんのやぐらに上ると、ただ一人で駆けて来る男の姿が目に入りました。
25 このことを大声で告げるとダビデは、「一人か。それなら、きっと良い知らせだ」と叫びました。
しかし、第一の使者のあとから少し間をおいて、 26 もう一人の男が走って来るのを、見張りは確認しました。「もう一人、やってまいります。」彼は大声で叫びました。
「うん、それも吉報に違いない。」王はうなずきました。
27 「最初に来るのは、ツァドクの息子アヒマアツのようです。」
「あれはいいやつだ。悪い知らせなど持って来るはずがない。」
28 アヒマアツは、「万事首尾よくまいりました！」と叫ぶと、王の前にひれ伏し、さらにことばを続けました。「主はすばらしいお方です。王様をお守りくださいました。反逆者どもは一網打尽です。」
29 「それで、アブシャロムはどうした。無事なのか。」
「ヨアブ将軍からこの使いをことづかりました際、何か騒ぎがあったようで叫び声を耳にしましたが、くわしいことは知りません。」
30 「よかろう。ここで待っておれ。」アヒマアツは、わきに退きました。 31 するとクシュ人が到着し、「王様、吉報でございます！ 本日、主は、すべての謀反人どもからあなたをお救いくださいました」と報告しました。
32 「それで無事なのか!? 息子のアブシャロムは。」
「あなたに敵する者に、あの方の姿はよい見せしめとなりました。」
33 すると王の目から涙があふれ、彼は門の屋上に上り、そこで泣き叫びました。「ああ、アブシャロムよ。わが子、アブシャロム！ こんなことなら、私が代わって死ねばよかった。ああ、アブシャロム。ああ、わが子よ！」

18 David mustered the men who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 David sent out his troops,(A) a third under the command of Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai(B) son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai(C) the Gittite. The king told the troops, “I myself will surely march out with you.”
3 But the men said, “You must not go out; if we are forced to flee, they won’t care about us. Even if half of us die, they won’t care; but you are worth ten(D) thousand of us.[a] It would be better now for you to give us support from the city.”(E)
4 The king answered, “I will do whatever seems best to you.”
So the king stood beside the gate while all his men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands. 5 The king commanded Joab, Abishai and Ittai, “Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake.” And all the troops heard the king giving orders concerning Absalom to each of the commanders.
6 David’s army marched out of the city to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest(F) of Ephraim. 7 There Israel’s troops were routed by David’s men, and the casualties that day were great—twenty thousand men. 8 The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest swallowed up more men that day than the sword.
9 Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s hair(G) got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.
10 When one of the men saw what had happened, he told Joab, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree.”
11 Joab said to the man who had told him this, “What! You saw him? Why didn’t you strike(H) him to the ground right there? Then I would have had to give you ten shekels[b] of silver and a warrior’s belt.(I)”
12 But the man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels[c] were weighed out into my hands, I would not lay a hand on the king’s son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.[d]’ 13 And if I had put my life in jeopardy[e]—and nothing is hidden from the king(J)—you would have kept your distance from me.”
14 Joab(K) said, “I’m not going to wait like this for you.” So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom’s heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree. 15 And ten of Joab’s armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him.(L)
16 Then Joab(M) sounded the trumpet, and the troops stopped pursuing Israel, for Joab halted them. 17 They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up(N) a large heap of rocks(O) over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled to their homes.
18 During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King’s Valley(P) as a monument(Q) to himself, for he thought, “I have no son(R) to carry on the memory of my name.” He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom’s Monument to this day.
David Mourns
19 Now Ahimaaz(S) son of Zadok said, “Let me run and take the news to the king that the Lord has vindicated him by delivering him from the hand of his enemies.(T)”
20 “You are not the one to take the news today,” Joab told him. “You may take the news another time, but you must not do so today, because the king’s son is dead.”
21 Then Joab said to a Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed down before Joab and ran off.
22 Ahimaaz son of Zadok again said to Joab, “Come what may, please let me run behind the Cushite.”
But Joab replied, “My son, why do you want to go? You don’t have any news that will bring you a reward.”
23 He said, “Come what may, I want to run.”
So Joab said, “Run!” Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain[f] and outran the Cushite.
24 While David was sitting between the inner and outer gates, the watchman(U) went up to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As he looked out, he saw a man running alone. 25 The watchman called out to the king and reported it.
The king said, “If he is alone, he must have good news.” And the runner came closer and closer.
26 Then the watchman saw another runner, and he called down to the gatekeeper, “Look, another man running alone!”
The king said, “He must be bringing good news,(V) too.”
27 The watchman said, “It seems to me that the first one runs like(W) Ahimaaz son of Zadok.”
“He’s a good man,” the king said. “He comes with good news.”
28 Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” He bowed down before the king with his face to the ground and said, “Praise be to the Lord your God! He has delivered up those who lifted their hands against my lord the king.”
29 The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom safe?”
Ahimaaz answered, “I saw great confusion just as Joab was about to send the king’s servant and me, your servant, but I don’t know what it was.”
30 The king said, “Stand aside and wait here.” So he stepped aside and stood there.
31 Then the Cushite arrived and said, “My lord the king, hear the good news! The Lord has vindicated you today by delivering you from the hand of all who rose up against you.”
32 The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom safe?”
The Cushite replied, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man.”(X)
33 The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died(Y) instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!”[g](Z)

敵の軍勢が、夜も昼も押し寄せて来ます。
尊大にも私に襲いかかって、

3-4 恐れるとき、私はあなたに信頼します。
あなたの約束だけが頼りなのです。
神に信頼している私に、
ただの人間が手出しなどできるわけがありません。
5 彼らはいつでも私のことばをねじ曲げ、
どうしたら私を傷つけることができるかと
考えているのです。
6 彼らは計画を練り上げるために集まり、
道ばたに潜んでは、私をねらって待ち伏せています。

どうか、怒りを燃やし、

1 Be merciful to me,(A) my God,
for my enemies are in hot pursuit;(B)

2 My adversaries pursue me all day long;(D)
in their pride many are attacking me.(E)
3 When I am afraid,(F) I put my trust in you.(G)
4 In God, whose word I praise—(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.(I)
What can mere mortals do to me?(J)

27 さて、朝になりました。祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たちはまた集まり、どうやってローマ政府にイエスの死刑を承認させようかと、あれこれ策を練りました。 2 それから、縛ったまま、イエスをローマ総督ピラトに引き渡しました。
3 ところで、裏切り者のユダはどうなったでしょう。イエスに死刑の判決が下されると聞いてはじめて、彼は自分のしたことがどんなに大それたことだったか気づき、深く後悔しました。それで祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちのところに銀貨三十枚を返しに行き、 4 「私はとんでもない罪を犯してしまった。罪のない人の血を売ったりして」と言いました。しかし祭司長たちは、「今さらわれわれの知ったことか。かってにしろ」と言って、取り合おうとしませんでした。
5 それでユダは、銀貨を神殿に投げ込み、出て行って首をくくって死んでしまいました。 6 祭司長たちはその銀貨を拾い上げてつぶやきました。「まさか、これを神殿の金庫に入れるわけにもいくまい。人を殺すために使った金だから。」
7 彼らは相談し、その金で、陶器師が粘土を取っていた畑を買い上げ、そこをエルサレムで死んだ外国人の墓地とすることにしました。 8 そこでこの墓地は、今でも「血の畑」と呼ばれています。 9-10 こうして、「彼らは銀貨三十枚を取った。それは、イスラエルの人々がその人を見積もった値段だ。彼らは、主が私に命じられたように、それで陶器師の畑を買った」（ゼカリヤ11・12―13）というエレミヤの預言のとおりになったのです。

12 しかし、祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たちからいろいろな訴えが出されている時は、口をつぐんで、何もお答えになりませんでした。 13 それでピラトはイエスに、「おまえにあれほど不利な証言をしているのが、聞こえないのか」と尋ねました。
14 それでもイエスは何もお答えになりません。これには総督も、驚きあきれてしまいました。
15 ところで、毎年、過越の祭りの間に、ユダヤ人たちが希望する囚人の一人に、総督が恩赦を与える慣習がありました。 16 当時、獄中にはバラバという名の知れた男が捕らえられていました。 17 それでその朝、群衆が官邸に詰めかけた時、ピラトは尋ねました。「さあ、いったいどちらを釈放してほしいのか。バラバか、それともキリストと呼ばれるイエスか。」 18 ピラトがこう言ったのは、イエスが捕らえられたのは、イエスの人気をねたむユダヤ人指導者たちの陰謀だと気づいたからです。
19 裁判の最中に、ピラトのもとへ彼の妻が、「どうぞ、その正しい方に手をお出しになりませんように。ゆうべ、その人のことで恐ろしい夢を見ましたから」と言ってよこしました。
20 ところが、祭司長とユダヤの役人たちは、バラバを釈放し、イエスの死刑を要求するように、群衆をたきつけました。 21 それで、ピラトがもう一度、「二人のうち、どちらを釈放してほしいのか」と尋ねると、群衆は即座に、「バラバを！」と大声で叫んだのでした。
22 「では、キリストと呼ばれるあのイエスは、どうするのだ。」「十字架につけろ！」
23 「どうしてだ。あの男がいったいどんな悪事を働いたというのか。」ピラトがむきになって尋ねても、人々は、「十字架だ！ 十字架につけろ！」と叫び続けるばかりでした。
24 どうにも手のつけようがありません。暴動になるおそれさえ出てきました。あきらめたピラトは、水を入れた鉢を持って来させ、群衆の面前で手を洗い、「この正しい人の血について、私には何の責任もない。責任は全部おまえたちが負いなさい」と言いました。
25 すると群衆は大声で、「かまわない。責任はおれたちや子どもたちの上にふりかかってもいい！」と叫びました。
26 ピラトはやむなくバラバを釈放し、イエスをむち打ってから、十字架につけるためにローマ兵に引き渡しました。 27 兵士たちはまず、イエスを兵営に連れて行き、全部隊を召集すると、 28 イエスの着物をはぎとって赤いガウンを着せ、 29 長いとげのいばらで作った冠を頭に載せ、右手には、王の笏に見立てた葦の棒を持たせました。それから、拝むまねをして、「これはこれは、ユダヤ人の王様。ばんざーい！」とはやし立てました。 30 また、つばをかけたり、葦の棒をひったくって頭をたたいたりしました。
31 こうしてさんざんからかったあげく、赤いガウンを脱がせ、もとの服を着せると、いよいよ十字架につけるために引いて行きました。 32 刑場に行く途中、通りすがりの男にむりやりイエスの十字架を背負わせました。クレネから来合わせたシモンという男でした。 33 ついに、ゴルゴタ、すなわち「どくろの丘」という名で知られる場所に着きました。 34 兵士たちはそこで、薬用のぶどう酒を飲ませようとしましたが、イエスはちょっと口をつけただけで、飲もうとはされませんでした。
35 イエスを十字架につけ終わると、兵士たちはさいころを投げてイエスの着物を分け合いました。 36 それがすむと、今度はその場に座って見張りをしました。 37 またイエスの頭上には、「この者はユダヤ人の王イエスである」と書いた罪状書きを打ちつけました。
38 その朝、強盗が二人、それぞれイエスの右と左で十字架につけられました。 39 刑場のそばを通りかかった人々は、大げさな身ぶりをしながら、口ぎたなくイエスをののしりました。 40 「やい。神殿を打ちこわして、三日のうちに建て直せるんだってな！ おまえが神の子だって？ それなら、十字架から降りてみろ。」
41 祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちも、イエスをあざけりました。 42 「他人は救えるが自分は救えないというわけか。イスラエルの王が聞いてあきれる。さあ、十字架から降りて来い！ そうしたら信じてやろうじゃないか。 43 おまえは神に頼っているのだろう。神のお気に入りなら、せいぜい助けていただくがいい。自分を神の子だと言っていたのだから。」
44 強盗までがいっしょになって、悪口をあびせました。
45 さて時間がたち、正午にもなったころ、急にあたりが暗くなり、一面の闇におおわれました。それが三時間も続きました。
46 三時ごろ、イエスは大声で、「エリ、エリ、レマ、サバクタニ」と叫ばれました。それは、「わが神、わが神。どうしてわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味です。
47 近くでその声を聞いた人の中には、「あれはエリヤを呼んでいるのだ」と思う者もいました。 48 一人の男がさっと駆け寄り、海綿に酸っぱいぶどう酒を含ませると、それを葦の棒につけて差し出しました。 49 ところが、ほかの者たちは、「放っておけよ。エリヤが救いに来るかどうか、見ようじゃないか」と言いました。
50 その時、イエスはもう一度大声で叫んで、息を引き取りました。 51 すると、神殿の至聖所を仕切っていた幕が、上から下まで真っ二つに裂けたのです。大地は揺れ動き、岩はくずれました。 52 さらに墓が開いて、生前神に従っていた多くの人たちが生き返りました。 53 彼らはイエスが復活されたあと、墓を出てエルサレムに入り、多くの人の前に姿を現したのです。
54 十字架のそばにいた隊長や兵士たちは、このすさまじい地震やいろいろの出来事を見て震え上がり、「この人はほんとうに神の子だった！」と叫びました。
55 イエスの世話をするためにガリラヤからついて来たたくさんの女たちも、遠くからこの様子を見ていました。 56 マグダラのマリヤ、ヤコブとヨセフの母マリヤ、ゼベダイの息子ヤコブとヨハネの母などです。
イエスの埋葬
57 夕方になりました。イエスの弟子で、アリマタヤ出身のヨセフという金持ちが来て、 58 ピラトに、イエスの遺体を引き取りたいと願い出ました。ピラトは願いを聞き入れ、遺体を渡すように命じました。 59 ヨセフは遺体を取り降ろすと、きれいな亜麻布でくるみ、 60 岩をくり抜いた、自分の新しい墓に納めました。そして、大きな石を転がして入口をふさぎ、帰って行きました。 61 この有様を、マグダラのマリヤともう一人のマリヤが、近くに座って見ていました。 62-63 翌日の安息日に、祭司長やパリサイ人たちがピラトに願い出ました。「総督閣下。あの大うそつきは、確か、『わたしは三日後に復活する』と言っていました。 64 それをいいことに、弟子たちが死体を盗み出し、イエスは復活したと言いふらしては、まずいことになりかねません。それこそ、このところの騒ぎではすまず、大混乱になるかもしれません。ですからどうぞ、墓を三日目まで見張るように命令を出してください。」
65 ピラトは答えました。「よろしい。では厳重に見張らせるがよい。」
66 そこで彼らは、石に封印をし、警備の者をおいて、だれも忍び込めないようにしました。

Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)
Jesus Before Pilate(L)
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
