(A)Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; (B)examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you [a](C)fail the test? But I hope that you will realize that we ourselves [b]do not fail the test. Now we pray to God that you do no wrong, not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may [c]appear unapproved. For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. For we rejoice when we ourselves are (D)weak but you are strong. This we also pray for, [d]that you be (E)restored. 10 For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present (F)I need not use (G)severity, in accordance with the (H)authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed. But we pray God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. What we pray for is your improvement. 10 I write this while I am away from you, in order that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority which the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.
