Salutation

Paul, apôtre de Jésus-Christ par la volonté de Dieu, et le frère Timothée, saluent l’Eglise de Dieu qui est à Corinthe[a] ainsi que tous les membres du peuple saint dans l’ensemble de l’Achaïe[b].

Que la grâce et la paix vous soient accordées par Dieu notre Père et par le Seigneur Jésus-Christ.

Prière de reconnaissance

Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, le Père qui est plein de bonté, le Dieu qui réconforte dans toutes les situations. Il nous réconforte dans toutes nos détresses, afin qu’à notre tour nous soyons capables de réconforter ceux qui passent par toutes sortes de détresses, en leur apportant le réconfort que Dieu nous a apporté.

De même, en effet, que les souffrances de Christ surabondent dans notre vie, le réconfort qu’il nous donne surabonde. Si donc nous passons par la détresse, c’est pour votre réconfort et votre salut. Et si nous sommes réconfortés, c’est pour que vous receviez, vous aussi, du réconfort afin de pouvoir supporter les mêmes souffrances que celles que nous endurons.

Et nous possédons à votre sujet une ferme espérance. Car nous savons que si vous avez part aux souffrances, vous avez aussi part au réconfort. Il faut, en effet, que vous sachiez, frères et sœurs, quelle détresse nous avons connue dans la province d’Asie[c]. Nous étions écrasés, à bout de forces, au point même que nous désespérions de conserver la vie.

Nous avions accepté en nous-mêmes notre condamnation à mort. Cela nous a appris à ne pas mettre notre confiance en nous-mêmes, mais uniquement en Dieu qui ressuscite les morts. 10 C’est lui qui nous a délivrés d’une telle mort et qui nous en délivrera encore. Oui, nous avons cette espérance en lui qu’il nous délivrera encore, 11 et vous y contribuez en priant pour nous. Ainsi, le don de la grâce qu’il nous accorde en réponse aux prières de beaucoup, sera aussi pour beaucoup une occasion de remercier Dieu à notre sujet.

Les problèmes de relations entre Paul et les Corinthiens

L’ajournement de la visite de Paul

12 S’il est une chose dont nous pouvons être fiers, c’est le témoignage de notre conscience ; il nous atteste que nous nous sommes conduits dans le monde, et tout spécialement envers vous, avec la sincérité[d] et la pureté qui viennent de Dieu, en nous fondant, non sur une sagesse purement humaine, mais sur la grâce de Dieu. 13 Car ce que nous vous écrivons dans nos lettres ne veut pas dire autre chose que ce que vous pouvez y lire et y comprendre. Et j’espère que vous le comprendrez pleinement 14 – comme vous l’avez déjà compris en partie : vous pouvez être fiers de nous, comme nous le serons de vous au jour de notre Seigneur Jésus.

15 Persuadé que telle était votre pensée, je m’étais proposé de me rendre chez vous en premier lieu, afin de vous procurer une double joie[e] : 16 je comptais passer par chez vous en allant en Macédoine, puis revenir de Macédoine[f] chez vous. Vous auriez alors pu m’aider à poursuivre mon voyage vers la Judée[g].

17 En formant ce projet, ai-je fait preuve de légèreté ? Ou bien mes plans seraient-ils inspirés par des motifs purement humains, en sorte que lorsque je dis « oui », cela pourrait être « non »[h] ?

18 Aussi vrai que Dieu est digne de confiance, je vous le garantis : la parole que nous vous avons adressée n’est pas à la fois « oui » et « non ». 19 Car Jésus-Christ, le Fils de Dieu, que moi-même comme Silvain[i] et Timothée nous avons proclamé parmi vous, n’a pas été à la fois oui et non. En lui était le oui : 20 car c’est en lui que Dieu a dit « oui » à tout ce qu’il avait promis. Aussi est-ce par lui que nous disons « oui », « amen », pour que la gloire revienne à Dieu. 21 C’est Dieu, en effet, qui nous a fermement unis avec vous à Christ et qui nous a consacrés à lui par son onction. 22 Et c’est encore Dieu qui nous a marqués de son sceau, comme sa propriété, et qui a mis dans notre cœur son Esprit comme acompte des biens à venir.

23 Pourquoi donc ne suis-je pas encore revenu à Corinthe ? J’en prends Dieu à témoin sur ma vie : c’est parce que je voulais vous ménager ; 24 notre rôle n’est pas de dominer sur votre foi, mais de collaborer ensemble à votre joie, car vous tenez ferme dans la foi.

C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé de ne pas retourner chez vous pour ne pas vous attrister[j]. Car si je vous plonge dans la tristesse, qui pourra encore réjouir mon cœur si ce n’est ceux que j’aurais moi-même attristés[k] ?

Si je vous ai écrit comme je l’ai fait dans ma précédente lettre[l], c’était précisément pour qu’en venant chez vous je ne sois pas attristé par ceux-là mêmes qui devaient faire ma joie. J’ai, en effet, la conviction en ce qui vous concerne que ce qui fait ma joie fait aussi la vôtre à vous tous.

Aussi est-ce dans une profonde détresse, le cœur serré et avec bien des larmes que je vous ai écrit cette lettre, non pour vous attrister, mais pour que vous sachiez combien je vous aime.

Le pardon du coupable

Si l’un de vous a été une cause de tristesse, ce n’est pas moi qu’il a attristé, mais vous tous, ou du moins une partie d’entre vous, pour ne rien exagérer. Le blâme que lui a infligé la majorité d’entre vous est suffisant pour cet homme. Aussi devriez-vous à présent lui accorder votre pardon et le réconforter, afin qu’il ne soit pas accablé par une tristesse excessive.

Je vous engage donc à lui témoigner de l’amour. Car je vous ai aussi écrit pour vous mettre à l’épreuve et voir si vous obéissez en toutes choses. 10 Celui à qui vous accordez le pardon, je lui pardonne moi aussi. Et si j’ai pardonné – pour autant que j’aie eu quelque chose à pardonner – je l’ai fait à cause de vous, devant Christ, 11 pour ne pas laisser Satan prendre l’avantage sur nous : nous ne connaissons en effet que trop bien ses intentions.

L’inquiétude de Paul

12 Je suis allé à Troas pour y annoncer l’Evangile de Christ. J’y ai trouvé, grâce au Seigneur, des portes largement ouvertes à mon activité. 13 Cependant, je n’ai pas eu l’esprit tranquille parce que je n’y avais pas retrouvé mon frère Tite. C’est pourquoi j’ai pris congé des croyants et je suis parti pour la Macédoine.

Défense du ministère apostolique

Le triomphe de Christ

14 Je ne puis que remercier Dieu : il nous traîne toujours dans son cortège triomphal, par notre union avec Christ[m], et il se sert de nous pour répandre en tout lieu, comme un parfum, la connaissance de Christ. 15 Oui, nous sommes, pour Dieu, comme le parfum de Christ parmi ceux qui sont sur la voie du salut et parmi ceux qui sont sur la voie de la perdition. 16 Pour les uns, c’est une odeur de mort qui les mène à la mort, pour les autres, c’est une odeur de vie qui les conduit à la vie.

Et qui donc est à la hauteur d’une telle tâche ? 17 En tout cas nous, nous ne sommes pas comme tant d’autres qui accommodent la Parole de Dieu pour en tirer profit. C’est avec des intentions pures, de la part de Dieu, dans l’union avec Christ que nous annonçons la Parole.

Les serviteurs de la nouvelle alliance

En parlant ainsi, commençons-nous de nouveau à nous recommander nous-mêmes, ou avons-nous besoin, comme certains, de vous présenter des lettres de recommandation ou de vous en demander[n] ? Notre lettre c’est vous-mêmes, une lettre écrite dans notre cœur, que tout le monde peut connaître et lire. Il est évident que vous êtes une lettre que Christ a confiée à notre ministère et qu’il nous a fait écrire, non avec de l’encre, mais par l’Esprit du Dieu vivant, non sur des tablettes de pierre[o], mais sur des tablettes de chair : sur votre cœur[p].

Telle est l’assurance que nous avons par Christ, devant Dieu. Cela ne veut pas dire que nous puissions nous considérer par nous-mêmes à la hauteur d’une telle tâche[q] ; au contraire, notre capacité vient de Dieu. C’est lui qui nous a rendus capables d’être les serviteurs d’une nouvelle alliance qui ne dépend pas de la Loi, avec ses commandements écrits, mais de l’Esprit. Car la Loi, avec ses commandements écrits, inflige la mort. L’Esprit, lui, communique la vie.

Le ministère de Moïse, au service de la Loi, dont les lettres ont été gravées sur des pierres, a conduit à la mort. Cependant, ce ministère a été glorieux, au point que les Israélites n’ont pas pu regarder Moïse en face, à cause de la gloire, pourtant passagère, dont rayonnait son visage. Mais alors, le ministère au service de l’Esprit ne sera-t-il pas bien plus glorieux encore ?

En effet, si le ministère qui a entraîné la condamnation des hommes a été glorieux, combien plus glorieux est celui qui conduit les hommes à être déclarés justes par Dieu ! 10 On peut même dire que cette gloire du passé perd tout son éclat quand on la compare à la gloire présente qui lui est bien supérieure. 11 Car si ce qui est passager a été touché par la gloire, combien plus grande sera la gloire de ce qui demeure éternellement !

12 Cette espérance nous remplit d’assurance. 13 Nous ne faisons pas comme Moïse qui « couvrait son visage d’un voile » pour empêcher les Israélites de voir la réalité vers laquelle tendait ce qui était passager[r].

14 Mais leur esprit est devenu incapable de comprendre : aujourd’hui encore, lorsqu’ils lisent le Livre de l’Ancienne Alliance[s], ce même voile demeure ; il ne leur est pas ôté, car c’est dans l’union avec Christ qu’il est levé.

15 Aussi, jusqu’à ce jour, toutes les fois que les Israélites lisent les écrits de Moïse, un voile leur couvre l’esprit. 16 Mais, comme le dit l’Ecriture : Lorsque Moïse se tournait vers le Seigneur, il ôtait le voile[t]. 17 Le Seigneur dont parle le texte, c’est l’Esprit[u], et là où est l’Esprit du Seigneur, là règne la liberté.

18 Et nous tous qui, le visage découvert, contemplons[v], comme dans un miroir, la gloire du Seigneur, nous sommes transformés en son image dans une gloire dont l’éclat ne cesse de grandir. C’est là l’œuvre du Seigneur, c’est-à-dire de l’Esprit.

Un trésor dans des vases d’argile

Ainsi, puisque tel est le ministère que Dieu nous a confié dans sa bonté, nous ne perdons pas courage. Nous rejetons les intrigues et les procédés indignes. Nous ne recourons pas à la ruse et nous ne falsifions pas la Parole de Dieu. Au contraire, en faisant connaître la vérité, nous nous en remettons devant Dieu au jugement de tout homme.

Et si notre Evangile demeure « voilé », il ne l’est que pour ceux qui vont à la perdition, pour les incrédules. Le dieu de ce monde a aveuglé leur esprit et les empêche ainsi de voir briller la lumière de l’Evangile qui fait resplendir la gloire de Christ, lui qui est l’image de Dieu.

Ce n’est pas nous-mêmes que nous mettons en avant dans notre prédication, c’est le Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Nous-mêmes, nous sommes vos serviteurs à cause de Jésus. En effet, le même Dieu qui, un jour, a dit : Que la lumière brille du sein des ténèbres[w], a lui-même brillé dans notre cœur pour y faire resplendir la connaissance de la gloire de Dieu qui rayonne du visage de Jésus-Christ.

Mais ce trésor, nous le portons dans des vases faits d’argile, pour que ce soit la puissance extraordinaire de Dieu qui se manifeste, et non notre propre capacité.

Ainsi, nous sommes accablés par toutes sortes de détresses et cependant jamais écrasés. Nous sommes désemparés, mais non désespérés, persécutés, mais non abandonnés, terrassés, mais non pas anéantis.

10 Oui, nous portons toujours et en tout lieu, dans notre corps, la mort de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus soit, elle aussi, rendue manifeste par notre corps. 11 Car sans cesse, nous qui vivons, nous sommes exposés à la mort à cause de Jésus, afin que la vie de Jésus soit aussi rendue manifeste dans notre corps mortel.

12 Ainsi, la mort fait son œuvre en nous, et la vie en vous. 13 Nous sommes animés de ce même esprit de foi dont il est question dans cette parole de l’Ecriture : J’ai cru, voilà pourquoi j’ai parlé[x]. Nous aussi nous croyons, et c’est pour cela que nous parlons. 14 Nous savons en effet que Dieu, qui a ressuscité le Seigneur Jésus, nous ressuscitera aussi avec Jésus, et nous fera paraître, avec vous, en sa présence.

15 Ainsi, tout ce que nous endurons, c’est à cause de vous, pour que la grâce abonde en atteignant des hommes toujours plus nombreux, et qu’ainsi augmente le nombre des prières de reconnaissance à la gloire de Dieu.

16 Voilà pourquoi nous ne perdons pas courage. Et même si notre être extérieur se détériore peu à peu, intérieurement, nous sommes renouvelés de jour en jour.

17 En effet, nos détresses présentes sont passagères et légères par rapport au poids insurpassable de gloire éternelle qu’elles nous préparent. 18 Et nous ne portons pas notre attention sur les choses visibles, mais sur les réalités encore invisibles. Car les réalités visibles ne durent qu’un temps, mais les invisibles demeureront éternellement.

Nous le savons, en effet : si notre demeure, cette tente que nous habitons sur la terre, vient à être détruite, nous avons au ciel une maison que Dieu nous a préparée, une habitation éternelle qui n’est pas l’œuvre de l’homme. Car, dans cette tente, nous gémissons parce que nous attendons, avec un ardent désir, de revêtir, par-dessus l’autre[y], notre domicile qui est de nature céleste[z] – si, bien sûr, cela se produit tant que nous sommes encore vêtus de notre corps, et non quand la mort nous en aura dépouillés.

En effet, nous qui vivons dans cette tente, nous gémissons, accablés, parce que nous voulons, non pas nous dévêtir, mais revêtir un vêtement par-dessus l’autre. Ainsi ce qui est mortel sera absorbé par la vie.

C’est Dieu lui-même qui nous a destinés à un tel avenir, et qui nous a accordé son Esprit comme acompte des biens à venir. Nous sommes donc, en tout temps, pleins de courage, et nous savons que, tant que nous séjournons dans ce corps, nous demeurons loin du Seigneur – car nous vivons guidés par la foi, non par la vue. Nous sommes pleins de courage, mais nous préférerions quitter ce corps pour aller demeurer auprès du Seigneur.

Aussi, que nous restions dans ce corps ou que nous le quittions, notre ambition est de plaire au Seigneur. 10 Car nous aurons tous à comparaître devant le tribunal de Christ, et chacun recevra ce qui lui revient selon les actes, bons ou mauvais, qu’il aura accomplis par son corps.

Le service de la réconciliation

11 C’est pourquoi, sachant ce qu’est la crainte du Seigneur, nous cherchons à convaincre les hommes, et Dieu sait parfaitement ce que nous sommes. J’espère d’ailleurs que, dans votre conscience, vous le savez, vous aussi.

12 Nous ne nous recommandons pas à nouveau auprès de vous. Nous voulons seulement vous donner de bonnes raisons d’être fiers de nous. Ainsi vous saurez répondre à ceux qui trouvent des raisons de se vanter dans les apparences et non dans leur cœur. 13 Quant à nous, s’il nous est arrivé de dépasser la mesure, c’est pour Dieu. Si nous montrons de la modération, c’est pour vous.

14 En effet, l’amour de Christ nous étreint, car nous avons acquis la certitude qu’un seul homme est mort pour tous : donc tous sont morts en lui. 15 Et il est mort pour tous afin que ceux qui vivent ne vivent plus pour eux-mêmes, mais pour celui qui est mort à leur place et ressuscité pour eux.

16 Ainsi, désormais, nous ne considérons plus personne d’une manière purement humaine. Certes, autrefois, nous avons considéré Christ de cette manière, mais ce n’est plus ainsi que nous le considérons maintenant.

17 Ainsi, si quelqu’un est uni à Christ, il appartient à une nouvelle création[aa] : les choses anciennes sont passées : voici, les choses nouvelles sont venues[ab]. 18 Tout cela est l’œuvre de Dieu, qui nous a réconciliés avec lui par Christ et qui nous a confié le ministère de la réconciliation. 19 En effet, Dieu était en Christ, réconciliant les hommes avec lui-même, sans tenir compte de leurs fautes, et il a fait de nous les dépositaires du message de la réconciliation. 20 Nous faisons donc fonction d’ambassadeurs au nom de Christ, comme si Dieu adressait par nous cette invitation aux hommes : « Au nom de Christ, nous vous en supplions : soyez réconciliés avec Dieu. 21 Celui qui était innocent de tout péché, Dieu l’a condamné comme un pécheur à notre place[ac] pour que, dans l’union avec Christ, nous recevions la justice que Dieu accorde[ad]. »

Aussi, nous qui travaillons ensemble à cette tâche, nous vous invitons à ne pas laisser sans effet la grâce que vous avez reçue de Dieu. En effet, Dieu déclare dans l’Ecriture :

Au moment favorable,
j’ai répondu à ton appel,
et au jour du salut,
je suis venu à ton secours[ae] .

Or, c’est maintenant, le moment tout à fait favorable ; c’est aujourd’hui, le jour du salut.

Pour que notre ministère soit sans reproche, nous évitons, en toute chose, de causer la chute de qui que ce soit. Et voici comment nous nous recommandons nous-mêmes en toutes choses comme serviteurs de Dieu : c’est en vivant avec une persévérance sans faille

dans les détresses, les privations, les angoisses,

dans les coups, les prisons, les émeutes,

dans les fatigues, les veilles, les jeûnes,

c’est par la pureté, par la connaissance,

par la patience, par la bonté,

par l’Esprit Saint, par l’amour sans feinte,

par la Parole de vérité, par la puissance de Dieu,

c’est par les armes de la justice, offensives ou défensives,

qu’on nous honore ou qu’on nous méprise,

que l’on dise de nous du mal ou du bien.

Et encore :

on nous prend pour des imposteurs, mais nous disons la vérité,

on nous prend pour des inconnus, et pourtant on nous connaît bien,

on nous prend pour des mourants, et voici nous sommes toujours en vie,

on nous prend pour des condamnés, mais nous ne sommes pas exécutés,

10 on nous croit affligés, et nous sommes toujours joyeux,

pauvres, et nous faisons beaucoup de riches,

dépourvus de tout, alors que tout nous appartient.

11 Chers Corinthiens, nous venons de vous parler en toute franchise, nous vous avons largement ouvert notre cœur : 12 vous n’y êtes pas à l’étroit, mais c’est vous qui faites preuve d’étroitesse dans vos sentiments. 13 Laissez-moi vous parler comme à mes enfants bien-aimés : rendez-nous la pareille ! Ouvrez-nous, vous aussi, votre cœur !

La séparation d’avec le mal

14 Ne vous mettez pas avec des incroyants sous un joug qui n’est pas celui du Seigneur. En effet, ce qui est juste peut-il s’unir à ce qui s’oppose à sa loi ? La lumière peut-elle être solidaire des ténèbres ? 15 Christ peut-il s’accorder avec le diable ? Que peut avoir en commun le croyant avec l’incroyant ? 16 Quel accord peut-il exister entre le temple de Dieu et les idoles ? Car nous sommes, nous, le temple du Dieu vivant. Dieu lui-même l’a dit :

J’habiterai et je marcherai au milieu d’eux.
Je serai leur Dieu, et ils seront mon peuple[af] .
17 C’est pourquoi :Sortez du milieu d’eux,
Séparez-vous d’eux, dit le Seigneur.
N’ayez pas de contact avec ce qui est impur[ag] ,
alors je vous accueillerai[ah] .
18 Je serai pour vous un Père,
et vous serez pour moi des fils et des filles,
dit le Seigneur, le Tout-Puissant[ai] .

Mes amis, puisque nous possédons ce qui nous a été promis en ces termes, purifions-nous de tout ce qui corrompt le corps et l’esprit, pour mener ainsi une vie pleinement sainte, dans la crainte de Dieu.

Paul et les Corinthiens réconciliés

Faites-nous une place dans votre cœur ! Nous n’avons causé de tort à personne, nous n’avons ruiné personne, nous n’avons exploité personne. En parlant ainsi, je n’entends nullement vous condamner. Je vous l’ai déjà dit : nous vous portons dans notre cœur à la vie et à la mort. Grande est mon assurance quand je parle de vous, grande est ma fierté à votre sujet. J’ai été pleinement réconforté, je déborde de joie dans toutes nos détresses.

En effet, à notre arrivée en Macédoine, nous n’avons pas eu un instant de repos, nous avons connu toutes sortes de détresses : conflits au-dehors, craintes au-dedans. Mais Dieu, qui réconforte ceux qui sont abattus, nous a réconfortés par l’arrivée de Tite. Ce n’est pas seulement sa venue qui nous a réconfortés, mais aussi le réconfort qu’il avait reçu de vous. Il nous a fait part de votre ardent désir de me revoir, de votre profonde tristesse, de votre dévouement à mon égard. Et tout cela n’a fait qu’augmenter ma joie.

C’est pourquoi, si je vous ai causé de la peine par ma précédente lettre[aj], je ne le regrette pas. Certes, je l’ai d’abord regretté en voyant combien elle vous a attristés sur le moment. Mais maintenant je me réjouis, non pas de votre tristesse, mais de ce que cette tristesse vous ait amenés à changer d’attitude[ak]. Car la tristesse que vous avez éprouvée était bonne aux yeux de Dieu, si bien qu’en fait nous ne vous avons causé aucun tort.

10 En effet, la tristesse qui est bonne aux yeux de Dieu produit un changement d’attitude qui conduit au salut et qu’on ne regrette pas. La tristesse du monde, elle, produit la mort.

11 Cette tristesse qui est bonne aux yeux de Dieu, voyez quel empressement elle a produit en vous : quelles excuses vous avez présentées, quelle indignation vous avez manifestée, et quelle crainte, quel ardent désir de me revoir, quel zèle, quelle détermination à punir le mal ! Par toute votre attitude, vous avez prouvé que vous étiez innocents en cette affaire.

12 Bref, si je vous ai écrit, ce n’était pas à cause de celui qui a commis l’offense ni à cause de celui qui l’a subie, mais c’était pour que votre empressement pour nous soit manifesté devant Dieu parmi vous.

13 C’est pourquoi votre réaction nous a réconfortés. A ce réconfort s’est ajoutée une joie bien plus vive encore en voyant combien Tite était heureux à cause de la manière dont vous avez apaisé ses craintes. 14 Ainsi, si je lui ai parlé de vous avec quelque fierté, je n’ai pas eu à en rougir, car l’éloge que je lui ai fait de vous s’est révélé conforme à la vérité, exactement comme tout ce que nous avons pu vous dire. 15 Aussi redouble-t-il d’affection pour vous quand il se rappelle votre obéissance à vous tous, et avec quels égards et quel respect vous l’avez accueilli.

16 Je suis heureux de pouvoir compter sur vous en toutes choses.

Praise to the God of All Comfort

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(H) the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us(I) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(J) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(K) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(L) so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed,(M) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(N) in the province of Asia.(O) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(P) who raises the dead.(Q) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(R) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(S) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(T) Then many will give thanks(U) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Paul’s Change of Plans

12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(V) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[b](W) and godly sincerity.(X) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(Y) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(Z)

15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(AA) first so that you might benefit twice.(AB) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(AC) to Macedonia(AD) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(AE) to Judea.(AF) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(AG) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

18 But as surely as God is faithful,(AH) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(AI) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c](AJ) and Timothy(AK)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(AL) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(AM) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(AN) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(AO) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(AP) in Christ. He anointed(AQ) us, 22 set his seal(AR) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AS)

23 I call God as my witness(AT)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(AU) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AV) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AW) So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.(AX) For if I grieve you,(AY) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? I wrote as I did,(AZ) so that when I came I would not be distressed(BA) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence(BB) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. For I wrote you(BC) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

If anyone has caused grief,(BD) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment(BE) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(BF) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(BG) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(BH) 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan(BI) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.(BJ)

Ministers of the New Covenant

12 Now when I went to Troas(BK) to preach the gospel of Christ(BL) and found that the Lord had opened a door(BM) for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind,(BN) because I did not find my brother Titus(BO) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.(BP)

14 But thanks be to God,(BQ) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma(BR) of the knowledge(BS) of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma(BT) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.(BU) 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death;(BV) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?(BW) 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.(BX) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,(BY) as those sent from God.(BZ)

Are we beginning to commend ourselves(CA) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(CB) to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(CC) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(CD) not on tablets of stone(CE) but on tablets of human hearts.(CF)

Such confidence(CG) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(CH) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(CI) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(CJ)—not of the letter(CK) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(CL)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

Now if the ministry that brought death,(CM) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(CN) transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation(CO) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(CP) 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope,(CQ) we are very bold.(CR) 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(CS) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull,(CT) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(CU) is read.(CV) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(CW) the veil is taken away.(CX) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,(CY) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(CZ) 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[d](DA) the Lord’s glory,(DB) are being transformed into his image(DC) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Present Weakness and Resurrection Life

Therefore, since through God’s mercy(DD) we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.(DE) Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;(DF) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.(DG) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience(DH) in the sight of God. And even if our gospel(DI) is veiled,(DJ) it is veiled to those who are perishing.(DK) The god(DL) of this age(DM) has blinded(DN) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,(DO) who is the image of God.(DP) For what we preach is not ourselves,(DQ) but Jesus Christ as Lord,(DR) and ourselves as your servants(DS) for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[e](DT) made his light shine in our hearts(DU) to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.(DV)

But we have this treasure in jars of clay(DW) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God(DX) and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side,(DY) but not crushed; perplexed,(DZ) but not in despair; persecuted,(EA) but not abandoned;(EB) struck down, but not destroyed.(EC) 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,(ED) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.(EE) 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,(EF) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(EG)

13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[f](EH) Since we have that same spirit of[g] faith,(EI) we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead(EJ) will also raise us with Jesus(EK) and present us with you to himself.(EL) 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(EM) to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(EN) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(EO) we are being renewed(EP) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(EQ) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(ER) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Awaiting the New Body

For we know that if the earthly(ES) tent(ET) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan,(EU) longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(EV) because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan(EW) and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(EX) so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(EY)

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.(EZ) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(FA) So we make it our goal to please him,(FB) whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us(FC) for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,(FD) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.(FE) 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again,(FF) but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,(FG) so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”(FH) as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.(FI) 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves(FJ) but for him who died for them(FK) and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly(FL) point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,(FM) the new creation(FN) has come:[h] The old has gone, the new is here!(FO) 18 All this is from God,(FP) who reconciled us to himself through Christ(FQ) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.(FR) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,(FS) as though God were making his appeal through us.(FT) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.(FU) 21 God made him who had no sin(FV) to be sin[i] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(FW)

As God’s co-workers(FX) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(FY) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
    and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[j](FZ)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(GA) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(GB) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(GC) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(GD) and in sincere love;(GE) in truthful speech(GF) and in the power of God;(GG) with weapons of righteousness(GH) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(GI) bad report(GJ) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(GK) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(GL) and yet we live on;(GM) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(GN) poor, yet making many rich;(GO) having nothing,(GP) and yet possessing everything.(GQ)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(GR) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(GS)—open wide your hearts(GT) also.

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(GU) with unbelievers.(GV) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(GW) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[k]?(GX) Or what does a believer(GY) have in common with an unbeliever?(GZ) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(HA) For we are the temple(HB) of the living God.(HC) As God has said:

“I will live with them
    and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.”[l](HD)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(HE)
    and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
    and I will receive you.”[m](HF)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
    and you will be my sons and daughters,(HG)
says the Lord Almighty.”[n](HH)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(HI) dear friends,(HJ) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(HK) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(HL) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(HM) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(HN) I am greatly encouraged;(HO) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(HP)

For when we came into Macedonia,(HQ) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(HR)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(HS) But God, who comforts the downcast,(HT) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(HU) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(HV) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(HW) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(HX) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(HY) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(HZ) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(IA) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(IB) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(IC) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(ID) receiving him with fear and trembling.(IE) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(IF)

And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

13 For we write none other things unto you, that what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

14 As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.

15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?

Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:

13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:

If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart.

13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.

14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:

But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,

In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;

By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,

By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;

As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;

10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

11 O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.

12 Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.

13 Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.

I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.

Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.

Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.

Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

12 Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.

13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.

14 For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.

15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

Greeting

To the church of God which is at Corinth, (C)with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

Comfort in Suffering

(E)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who (F)comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any [a]trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as (G)the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our [b]consolation also abounds through Christ. Now if we are afflicted, (H)it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that (I)as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

Delivered from Suffering

For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of (J)our [c]trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should (K)not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, 10 (L)who delivered us from so great a death, and [d]does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, 11 you also (M)helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on [e]our behalf (N)for the gift granted to us through many.

Paul’s Sincerity

12 For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in [f]simplicity and (O)godly sincerity, (P)not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you. 13 For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end 14 (as also you have understood us in part), (Q)that we are your boast as (R)you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Sparing the Church

15 And in this confidence (S)I intended to come to you before, that you might have (T)a second benefit— 16 to pass by way of you to Macedonia, (U)to come again from Macedonia to you, and be helped by you on my way to Judea. 17 Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan (V)according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No? 18 But as God is (W)faithful, our [g]word to you was not Yes and No. 19 For (X)the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me, (Y)Silvanus, and (Z)Timothy—was not Yes and No, (AA)but in Him was Yes. 20 (AB)For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and (AC)has anointed us is God, 22 who (AD)also has sealed us and (AE)given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

23 Moreover (AF)I call God as witness against my soul, (AG)that to spare you I came no more to Corinth. 24 Not (AH)that we [h]have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for (AI)by faith you stand.

Paul Urges Forgiveness

But I determined this within myself, (AJ)that I would not come again to you in sorrow. For if I make you (AK)sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Forgive the Offender

And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, (AL)I should have sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy, (AM)having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. For out of much [i]affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, (AN)not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

But (AO)if anyone has caused grief, he has not (AP)grieved me, but all of you to some extent—not to be too severe. This punishment which was inflicted (AQ)by the majority is sufficient for such a man, (AR)so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are (AS)obedient in all things. 10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For [j]if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Triumph in Christ

12 Furthermore, (AT)when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and (AU)a [k]door was opened to me by the Lord, 13 (AV)I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I departed for Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us [l]diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ (AW)among those who are being saved and (AX)among those who are perishing. 16 (AY)To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And (AZ)who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, as [m]so many, (BA)peddling[n] the word of God; but as (BB)of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

Christ’s Epistle(BC)

Do (BD)we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, (BE)epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? (BF)You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, (BG)ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not (BH)on tablets of stone but (BI)on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.

The Spirit, Not the Letter

And we have such trust through Christ toward God. (BJ)Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but (BK)our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as (BL)ministers of (BM)the new covenant, not (BN)of the letter but of the [o]Spirit; for (BO)the letter kills, (BP)but the Spirit gives life.

Glory of the New Covenant

But if (BQ)the ministry of death, (BR)written and engraved on stones, was glorious, (BS)so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will (BT)the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry (BU)of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, (BV)we use great boldness of speech— 13 unlike Moses, (BW)who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at (BX)the end of what was passing away. 14 But (BY)their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless (BZ)when one turns to the Lord, (CA)the veil is taken away. 17 Now (CB)the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (CC)liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding (CD)as in a mirror (CE)the glory of the Lord, (CF)are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [p]by the Spirit of the Lord.

The Light of Christ’s Gospel

Therefore, since we have this ministry, (CG)as we have received mercy, we (CH)do not lose heart. But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor [q]handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth (CI)commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. But even if our gospel is veiled, (CJ)it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds (CK)the god of this age (CL)has blinded, who do not believe, lest (CM)the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, (CN)who is the image of God, should shine on them. (CO)For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and (CP)ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God (CQ)who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has (CR)shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Cast Down but Unconquered

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, (CS)that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. Seeing the Invisible

16 Therefore we (DE)do not lose heart. Assurance of the Resurrection

For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, (DM)but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also (DN)has given us the Spirit as [t]a guarantee.

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For (DO)we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, (DP)well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 (DQ)For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, (DR)that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 11 Knowing, therefore, (DS)the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

Be Reconciled to God

12 For (DT)we do not commend ourselves again to you, but give you opportunity (DU)to boast on our behalf, that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart. 13 For (DV)if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that (DW)if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, (DX)that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

16 (DY)Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, (DZ)yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone (EA)is in Christ, he is (EB)a new creation; (EC)old things have passed away; behold, all things have become (ED)new. 18 Now all things are of God, (EE)who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that (EF)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [u]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then, we are (EG)ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For (EH)He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become (EI)the righteousness of God in Him.

Marks of the Ministry

We then, as (EJ)workers together with Him also (EK)plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says:

And in the day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

(EM)We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. Be Holy

11 O Corinthians! [x]We have spoken openly to you, (EW)our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but (EX)you are restricted by your own affections. 13 Now in return for the same (EY)(I speak as to children), you also be open.

14 (EZ)Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For (FA)what [y]fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what [z]communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For (FB)you[aa] are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

17 Therefore

The Corinthians’ Repentance

Open your hearts to us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, (FH)we have cheated no one. I do not say this to condemn; for (FI)I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. (FJ)Great is my boldness of speech toward you, (FK)great is my boasting on your behalf. (FL)I am filled with comfort. I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.

For indeed, (FM)when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but (FN)we were troubled on every side. (FO)Outside were conflicts, inside were fears. Nevertheless (FP)God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by (FQ)the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming, but also by the [ab]consolation with which he was comforted in you, when he told us of your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more.

For even if I made you (FR)sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; (FS)though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For (FT)godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; (FU)but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what (FV)clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be (FW)clear in this matter. 12 Therefore, although I wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, (FX)but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.

The Joy of Titus

13 Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit (FY)has been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to Titus was found true. 15 And his affections are greater for you as he remembers (FZ)the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him. 16 Therefore I rejoice that (GA)I have confidence in you in everything.
