Ang Mabuting Kawal ni Cristo Jesus
2 Kaya nga, anak ko, magpakatatag ka sa pamamagitan ng biyaya na nakay Cristo Jesus. 2 Ang mga bagay na narinig mo sa akin sa harap ng maraming saksi ay ipagkatiwala mo rin sa mga mapagkakatiwalaan at may kakayahang magturo sa iba. 3 Makihati ka sa mga paghihirap tulad ng isang mabuting kawal ni Cristo Jesus. 4 Hindi pinag-aabalahan ng isang kawal ang mga bagay na walang kinalaman sa pagiging kawal, upang mabigyan niya ng kasiyahan ang kanyang pinuno. 5 Gayundin naman, hindi magwawagi ang isang manlalaro kung hindi siya susunod sa mga alituntunin. 6 Ang masipag na magsasaka ang siyang dapat unang makinabang sa kanyang ani. 7 Isipin mong mabuti ang sinasabi ko sapagkat tutulungan ka ng Panginoon na maunawaan ang lahat.
8 Alalahanin mo si Jesu-Cristo na muling binuhay at nagmula sa angkan ni David, ayon sa ebanghelyong ipinapangaral ko. 9 Ito ang dahilan ng aking pagdurusa at pagkabilanggo, na parang ako'y isang kriminal. Ngunit hindi maaaring ibilanggo ang salita ng Diyos. 10 Dahil dito, tinitiis ko ang lahat alang-alang sa mga hinirang, upang makamit nila ang kaligtasan na matatagpuan kay Cristo Jesus na nagdudulot ng kaluwalhatiang walang hanggan. 11 Mapagkakatiwalaan ang salitang ito:
Kung tayo'y namatay na kasama niya, mabubuhay rin tayong kasama niya;
12 kung (A) tayo'y makapagtitiis, maghahari naman tayong kasama niya;
kapag siya'y ating ikakaila, ikakaila rin niya tayo;
13 kung tayo ma'y hindi nanatiling tapat, siya'y nananatiling tapat;
sapagkat hindi niya magagawang ikaila ang kanyang sarili.
14 Ipaalala mo sa kanila ang mga ito, at sa harap ng Diyos[a] ay pagbilinan mo sila na umiwas sa pagtatalo tungkol sa kahulugan ng mga salita. Wala itong ibinubungang mabuti at sa halip ay nagpapahamak lamang sa mga nakikinig.
Ang Manggagawa ng Diyos
15 Pagsikapan mong maging karapat-dapat sa Diyos, isang manggagawang walang anumang dapat ikahiya, at matapat sa pagtuturo ng katotohanan. 16 Iwasan mo ang mga usapang walang kabuluhan, sapagkat lalo lang magtutulak ito sa mga tao sa higit pang kasamaan. 17 Ang mga salita ng mga gumagawa nito'y gaya ng kanser na kumakalat sa katawan. Kasama sa mga ito sina Himeneo at Fileto. 18 Lumihis sila sa katotohanan at sinasabing ang muling pagkabuhay ay naganap na. Sinisira nila ang pananampalataya ng iba. 19 Ngunit (B) matibay ang saligang itinatag ng Diyos, at doo'y nakatatak: “Kilala ng Panginoon kung sino ang sa kanya,” at, “Lumayo sa kasamaan ang bawat tumatawag sa pangalan ng Panginoon.” 20 Sa isang malaking bahay ay may mga sisidlang yari sa ginto at pilak, ngunit mayroon din namang yari sa kahoy at putik. Ang iba'y para sa marangyang paggagamitan, at ang iba'y para sa karaniwan. 21 Sinumang naglilinis ng kanyang sarili mula sa kasamaan ay tulad ng mga sisidlang natatangi, malinis, at karapat-dapat gamitin ng may-ari para sa lahat ng mabuting gawain. 22 Layuan mo ang masasamang pagnanasa ng kabataan. Alam mo namang nagbubunga lang ang mga iyan ng pag-aaway. 24 Ang lingkod ng Panginoon ay hindi dapat makipag-away, sa halip, dapat siyang mabait sa lahat, mahusay magturo at matiyaga. 25 Mahinahon niyang pinapangaralan ang mga sumasalungat sa kanya, sa pag-asang pagkakalooban sila ng Diyos ng pagkakataong magsisi tungo sa pagkakilala sa katotohanan. 26 Sa gayon, matatauhan sila at makakawala sa bitag ng diyablo na bumihag sa kanila upang gawin ang kanyang kalooban.[b]

Un lucrător după voia lui Dumnezeu
14 Aminteşte-le aceste lucruri! Roagă-i solemn, înaintea lui Dumnezeu, să nu se certe cu privire la cuvinte, pentru că aceasta nu este de nici un folos, ci mai degrabă îi ruinează pe cei ce ascultă. 15 Străduieşte-te să te înfăţişezi înaintea lui Dumnezeu ca un om încercat, ca un lucrător care nu are de ce să-i fie ruşine, care explică corect Cuvântul adevărului. 16 Evită vorbăriile goale şi lumeşti, căci cei care se ţin de ele vor înainta tot mai mult spre lipsa de evlavie, 17 iar cuvântul lor se va împrăştia precum cangrena. Dintre aceştia sunt şi Imeneu, şi Filet, 18 care s-au rătăcit în ce priveşte adevărul, spunând că învierea a avut deja loc şi răsturnând astfel credinţa multora. 19 Cu toate acestea, temelia solidă a lui Dumnezeu rămâne fermă, având sigiliul aceasta: „Domnul îi cunoaşte pe cei ce sunt ai Lui“[b] şi „Oricine rosteşte Numele Domnului trebuie să se îndepărteze de nedreptate.“
20 Într-o casă mare nu sunt numai vase de aur şi de argint, ci şi de lemn şi de lut, unele pentru o întrebuinţare de cinste, altele pentru o întrebuinţare de ocară. 21 Aşadar, dacă cineva se curăţeşte de acestea, va fi un vas de cinste, sfinţit şi folositor Stăpânului, pregătit pentru orice lucrare bună. 22 Fugi de poftele tinereţii şi urmăreşte dreptatea, credinţa, dragostea, pacea, împreună cu cei care-L cheamă pe Domnul dintr-o inimă curată! 23 Evită disputele nebuneşti şi prosteşti, ştiind că ele dau naştere la certuri! 24 Şi robul Domnului nu trebuie să se certe, ci să fie blând cu toţi, capabil să dea învăţătură, să fie îngăduitor şi 25 să-i corecteze cu blândeţe pe cei ce se împotrivesc, în nădejdea că Dumnezeu le va da pocăinţa, ca să ajungă la cunoaşterea adevărului, 26 să-şi vină în fire şi să scape din capcana diavolului[c], în care au fost capturaţi ca să-i facă voia.

Be Strong
2 So you, my son, be strong [constantly strengthened] and empowered in the grace that is [to be found only] in Christ Jesus. 2 The things [the doctrine, the precepts, the admonitions, the sum of my ministry] which you have heard me teach [a]in the presence of many witnesses, entrust [as a treasure] to reliable and faithful men who will also be capable and qualified to teach others. 3 Take with me your share of hardship [passing through the difficulties which you are called to endure], like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service gets entangled in the [ordinary business] affairs of civilian life; [he avoids them] so that he may please the one who enlisted him to serve. 5 And if anyone competes as an athlete [in competitive games], he is not crowned [with the wreath of victory] unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hard-working farmer [who labors to produce crops] ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. 7 Think over the things I am saying [grasp their application], for the Lord will grant you insight and understanding in everything.
8 Remember Jesus Christ [the ever-living Lord who has] risen from the dead, [as the prophesied King] descended from David [king of Israel], according to my gospel [the good news that I preach],(A) 9 for that [gospel] I am suffering even to [the point of] wearing chains like a criminal; but the word of God is not chained or imprisoned! 10 For this reason I [am ready to] patiently endure all things for the sake of those who are the elect (God’s chosen ones), so that they too may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it the reward of eternal glory. 11 This is a faithful and trustworthy saying:
If we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12
If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He will also deny us;
13
If we are faithless, He remains faithful [true to His word and His righteous character], for He cannot deny Himself.
An Unashamed Workman
14 Remind the people of these facts, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good, and [upsets and undermines and] ruins [the faith of] those who listen. 15 Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth. 16 But avoid all irreverent babble and godless chatter [with its profane, empty words], for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their teaching will spread like gangrene. So it is with Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have deviated from the truth. They claim that the resurrection has already taken place, and they undermine the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God [which He has laid] stands [sure and unshaken despite attacks], bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord stand apart from wickedness and withdraw from wrongdoing.”(B)
20 Now in a large house there are not only [b]vessels and objects of gold and silver, but also vessels and objects of wood and of earthenware, and some are for honorable (noble, good) use and some for dishonorable (ignoble, common). 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things [which are dishonorable—disobedient, sinful], he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified [set apart for a special purpose and], useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 Run away from youthful lusts—pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those [believers] who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But have nothing to do with foolish and ignorant speculations [useless disputes over unedifying, stupid controversies], since you know that they produce strife and give birth to quarrels. 24 The servant of the Lord must not participate in quarrels, but must be kind to everyone [even-tempered, preserving peace, and he must be], skilled in teaching, patient and tolerant when wronged. 25 He must correct those who are in opposition with courtesy and gentleness in the hope that God may grant that they will repent and be led to the knowledge of the truth [accurately understanding and welcoming it], 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

- 2 Timothy 2:20 Like Rom 9:20-23, the analogy here has its roots in OT poetry (e.g. Ps 31:12; Prov 26:23) and prophecy (e.g. Is 45:9; Jer 18:2-6). Paul speaks of believers and unbelievers in Rom 9, but here he seems to be describing God’s household or family, in which all the vessels (containers, utensils) represent believers. While the objects in Rom 9:21 do not change, the vessels here are capable of changing their status and the use to which God puts them by keeping themselves from sinful behavior and influences (v 21).
