² People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,^(A) boastful, proud,^(B) abusive,^(C) disobedient to their parents,^(D) ungrateful, unholy,

²¹ For everyone looks out for their own interests,^(A) not those of Jesus Christ.

²⁹ They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,^{(A) 30} slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;^{(B) 31} they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,^(C) no mercy.

¹⁶ These people are grumblers^(A) and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires;^(B) they boast^(C) about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

⁴ treacherous,^(A) rash, conceited,^(B) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—

¹⁴ With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce^(A) the unstable;^(B) they are experts in greed^(C)—an accursed brood!^{(D) 15} They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam^(E) son of Bezer,^[a] who loved the wages of wickedness.

¹⁰ For the love of money^(A) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith^(B) and pierced themselves with many griefs.^(C)

¹⁸ For they mouth empty, boastful words^(A) and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping^(B) from those who live in error.
