Davide si propone di costruire un tempio; promesse fatte alla casa di Davide

7 (A)Quando il re si fu stabilito nel suo palazzo e il Signore gli ebbe dato riposo liberandolo da tutti i nemici che lo circondavano, 2 disse al *profeta *Natan: «Vedi, io abito in un palazzo di cedro e l'*arca di Dio sta sotto una *tenda». 3 Natan rispose al re: «Va', fa' tutto quello che hai in mente di fare, perché il Signore è con te».

4 Ma quella stessa notte la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Natan in questo modo: 5 «Va' e di' al mio servo *Davide: “Cosí dice il Signore: Saresti tu quello che mi costruirebbe una casa perché io vi abiti? 6 Ma io non ho abitato in una casa, dal giorno che feci uscire i figli d'*Israele dall'Egitto, fino a oggi; ho viaggiato sotto una tenda, in un *tabernacolo. 7 Dovunque sono andato, ora qua ora là, in mezzo a tutti i figli d'Israele, ho forse mai detto a uno dei giudici a cui avevo comandato di pascere il mio popolo d'Israele: Perché non mi costruite una casa di cedro?” 8 Ora dunque parlerai cosí al mio servo Davide: “Cosí dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io ti presi dall'ovile, da dietro alle pecore, perché tu fossi il principe d'Israele, mio popolo; 9 e sono stato con te dovunque sei andato; ho sterminato davanti a te tutti i tuoi nemici. Io renderò il tuo nome grande come quello dei grandi che sono sulla terra; 10 darò un posto a Israele, mio popolo, e ve lo pianterò perché abiti in casa sua e non sia piú turbato e i malvagi non lo opprimano come prima, 11 come facevano nel tempo in cui avevo stabilito dei *giudici sul mio popolo, Israele; e ti darò riposo liberandoti da tutti i tuoi nemici. In piú, il Signore ti annunzia questo: sarà lui che ti fonderà una casa! 12 Quando i tuoi giorni saranno compiuti e tu riposerai con i tuoi padri, io innalzerò al trono dopo di te la tua discendenza, il figlio che sarà uscito da te, e stabilirò saldamente il suo regno. 13 Egli costruirà una casa al mio nome e io renderò stabile per sempre il trono del suo regno. 14 Io sarò per lui un padre ed egli mi sarà figlio[a]; e, se fa del male, lo castigherò con vergate da uomini e con colpi da figli di uomini, 15 ma la mia grazia non si ritirerà da lui, come si è ritirata da *Saul, che io ho rimosso davanti a te. 16 La tua casa e il tuo regno saranno saldi per sempre davanti a te e il tuo trono sarà reso stabile per sempre”».

17 (B)Natan riferí a Davide tutte queste parole e tutta questa visione. 18 Allora il re Davide andò a presentarsi davanti al Signore e disse: «Chi sono io, Signore, Dio, e che cos'è la mia casa, perché tu mi abbia fatto arrivare fino a questo punto? 19 Questo è parso ancora poca cosa ai tuoi occhi, Signore, Dio; tu hai parlato anche della casa del tuo servo per un lontano avvenire. Questa è l'istruzione per l'uomo, Signore[b], Dio! 20 Che potrebbe Davide dirti di piú? Tu conosci il tuo servo, Signore, Dio! 21 Per amore della tua parola e seguendo il tuo cuore, hai compiuto tutte queste cose per rivelarle al tuo servo. 22 Tu sei davvero grande, Signore, Dio! Nessuno è pari a te e non c'è altro Dio fuori di te, secondo tutto quello che abbiamo udito con i nostri orecchi. 23 E qual popolo è come il tuo popolo, come Israele, l'unica nazione sulla terra che Dio sia venuto a redimere per formare il suo popolo, per farsi un nome, per compiere cose grandi e tremende, cacciando davanti al tuo popolo, che ti sei redento dall'Egitto, delle nazioni con i loro dèi? 24 Tu hai stabilito il tuo popolo, Israele, perché sia per sempre il tuo popolo; e tu, Signore, sei divenuto il suo Dio. 25 Dunque, o Signore, Dio, la parola che hai pronunziata riguardo al tuo servo e alla sua casa mantienila per sempre e fa' come hai detto. 26 Il tuo nome sia lodato per sempre e si dica: Il Signore degli eserciti è il Dio d'Israele! La casa del tuo servo Davide sia stabile davanti a te! 27 Poiché tu, o Signore degli eserciti, Dio d'Israele, hai fatto una rivelazione al tuo servo e gli hai detto: “Io ti edificherò una casa!” Perciò il tuo servo ha avuto il coraggio di rivolgerti questa preghiera. 28 Ora, o Signore, Dio, tu sei Dio, le tue parole sono verità e hai promesso questo bene al tuo servo; 29 piacciati dunque benedire ora la casa del tuo servo, perché essa sia sempre davanti a te! Poiché tu, o Signore, Dio, sei colui che ha parlato e per la tua benedizione la casa del tuo servo sarà benedetta per sempre!»

God’s Promise to David(A)

7 After the king was settled in his palace(B) and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies(C) around him,(D) 2 he said to Nathan(E) the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house(F) of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”(G)

3 Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind,(H) go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(I) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(J) 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(K) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(L) as my dwelling.(M) 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(N) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(O) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(P) of cedar?(Q)”’

8 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(R) and appointed you ruler(S) over my people Israel.(T) 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone,(U) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(V) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(W) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(X) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(Y) Wicked(Z) people will not oppress them anymore,(AA) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](AB) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(AC)

“‘The Lord declares(AD) to you that the Lord himself will establish(AE) a house(AF) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(AG) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(AH) and I will establish his kingdom.(AI) 13 He is the one who will build a house(AJ) for my Name,(AK) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(AL) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(AM) When he does wrong, I will punish him(AN) with a rod(AO) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(AP) as I took it away from Saul,(AQ) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne(AR) will be established(AS) forever.(AT)’”

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer(AU)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I,(AV) Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree,(AW) Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human![c]

20 “What more can David say(AX) to you? For you know(AY) your servant,(AZ) Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

22 “How great(BA) you are,(BB) Sovereign Lord! There is no one like(BC) you, and there is no God(BD) but you, as we have heard with our own ears.(BE) 23 And who is like your people Israel(BF)—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name(BG) for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders(BH) by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed(BI) from Egypt?[d] 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own(BJ) forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.(BK)

25 “And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise(BL) you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name(BM) will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established(BN) in your sight.

27 “Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy,(BO) and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing(BP) the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

God’s Covenant with David(A)

7 Now it came to pass (B)when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in (C)a house of cedar, (D)but the ark of God dwells inside tent (E)curtains.”

3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your (F)heart, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)“Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house (H)since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in (I)a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have (J)moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded (K)to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’ 8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: (L)“I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And (M)I have been with you wherever you have gone, (N)and have [a]cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will (O)plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; (P)nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 (Q)since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord [b]tells you (R)that He will make you a [c]house.

12 (S)“When your days are fulfilled and you (T)rest with your fathers, (U)I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (V)He shall build a house for My name, and I will (W)establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (X)I will be his Father, and he shall be (Y)My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the [d]blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, (Z)as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And (AA)your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before [e]you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”

17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Thanksgiving to God(AB)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: (AC)“Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. (AD)Is this the manner of man, O Lord God? 20 Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord God, (AE)know Your servant. 21 For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them. 22 Therefore (AF)You are great, [f]O Lord God. For (AG)there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our (AH)ears. 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, (AI)the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before (AJ)Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods? 24 For (AK)You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; (AL)and You, Lord, have become their God.

25 “Now, O Lord God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You have said. 26 So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer to You.

28 “And now, O Lord God, You are God, and (AM)Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. 29 Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed (AN)forever.”

The Lord's Covenant with David

7 (A)Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord (B)had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to (C)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell (D)in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells (E)in a tent.” 3 And Nathan said to the king, (F)“Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)Would you build me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not lived in a house (H)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (I)in a tent for my dwelling. 7 In all places where (J)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (K)any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded (L)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ 8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (M)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. 9 (N)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. When he commits iniquity, (AA)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (AB)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (AC)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (AD)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[d] (AE)Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer of Gratitude

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, (AF)“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. (AG)You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? (AH)For you know your servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 22 (AI)Therefore you are great, O Lord God. (AJ)For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 (AK)And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name (AL)and doing for them[e] great and awesome things by driving out before your people,[f] whom (AM)you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 (AN)And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O Lord, became their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and (AO)your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you.
