24 L'ira dell'Eterno si accese di nuovo contro Israele e incitò Davide contro il popolo, dicendo: «Va' a fare il censimento, d'Israele e di Giuda».
2 Cosí il re disse a Joab il capo dell'esercito che era con lui: «Va' in giro per tutte le tribú d'Israele, da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba, e fate il censimento del popolo perché io ne conosca il numero».
3 Joab rispose al re: «L'Eterno, il tuo DIO, moltiplichi il popolo cento volte piú di quello che è, e possano gli occhi del re, mio signore, vedere ciò. Ma perché il re mio signore desidera questo?».
4 Tuttavia l'ordine del re prevalse su Joab e sui capi dell'esercito. Cosí Joab e i capi dell'esercito lasciarono la presenza del re per andare a fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.
5 Passarono il Giordano e si accamparono ad Aroer, a destra della città che è in mezzo alla valle di Gad e verso Jazer.
6 Poi andarono a Galaad e nel paese di Tahtim-Hodsci; quindi andarono a Dan-Jaan e nei dintorni di Sidon.
7 Andarono anche alla fortezza di Tiro e in tutte le città degli Hivvei e dei Cananei, e giunsero nel mezzogiorno di Giuda, fino a Beer-Sceba.
8 Percorsero cosí tutto il paese e, in capo a nove mesi e venti giorni, fecero ritorno a Gerusalemme.
9 Joab consegnò al re la cifra del censimento del popolo: c'erano in Israele ottocentomila uomini forti, idonei a maneggiare la spada, mentre gli uomini di Giuda erano cinquecentomila.
10 Ma, dopo aver fatto il censimento del popolo, il cuore di Davide lo riprovò grandemente, e disse all'Eterno: «Ho gravemente peccato in ciò che ho fatto; ma ora, o Eterno, rimuovi l'iniquità del tuo servo, perché ho agito con grande stoltezza».
11 Quando al mattino Davide si alzò, la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta al profeta Gad, il veggente di Davide, dicendo:
12 «Va' a dire a Davide: Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Io ti propongo tre cose: scegline per te una e quella ti farò"».
13 Gad andò dunque da Davide a riferirgli la cosa e disse: «Vuoi che vengano per te sette anni di carestia nel tuo paese o tre mesi di fuga davanti ai tuoi nemici che t'inseguono, o tre giorni di peste nel tuo paese? Ora rifletti e vedi un po' quale risposta devo dare a colui che mi ha mandato».
14 Davide disse a Gad: «Mi trovo in grande angoscia! Cadiamo pure nelle mani dell'Eterno, perché le sue compassioni, sono grandi, ma che io non cada nelle mani degli uomini!».
15 Cosí l'Eterno mandò la peste in Israele, da quella mattina fino al tempo fissato. Da Dan a Beer-Sceba morirono settantamila persone del popolo.
16 Come l'angelo stendeva la sua mano su Gerusalemme per distruggerla, l'Eterno si rammaricò di quella calamità e disse all'angelo che sterminava il popolo: «Basta! Ora ritira la tua mano!». L'angelo dell'Eterno si trovava presso l'aia di Araunah, il Gebuseo.
17 Quando Davide vide l'angelo che colpiva il popolo, disse all'Eterno: «Ecco, io ho peccato, io ho agito iniquamente, ma queste pecore che hanno fatto? La tua mano perciò si volga contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre!».
18 Quel giorno Gad venne da Davide e gli disse: «Sali e costruisci un altare all'Eterno nell'aia di Araunah, il Gebuseo».
19 Cosí Davide salí, secondo la parola di Gad, come l'Eterno aveva comandato.
20 Araunah guardò e vide il re e i suoi servi, che si dirigevano verso di lui allora Araunah uscí e si prostrò davanti; al re con la faccia a terra.
21 Poi Araunah disse: «Perché il re, mio signore, è venuto dal suo servo?». Davide rispose: «Per comprare da te quest' aia e costruirvi un altare all'Eterno, affinché la calamità sia allontanata dal popolo».
22 Araunah disse a Davide: «Il re mio signore prenda e offra ciò che gli piacerà! Ecco i buoi per l'olocausto; gli attrezzi per trebbiare e i gioghi dei buoi serviranno per legna.
23 O re, tutte queste cose Araunah le dona al re». Poi Araunah disse al re: «L'Eterno. il tuo DIO ti sia propizio!».
24 Ma il re rispose ad Araunah: «No, io comprerò da te queste cose al prezzo che costano, e non offrirò all'Eterno, il mio DIO, olocausti che non mi costino nulla». Cosí Davide comprò l'aia ed i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 Poi Davide costruí in quel luogo un altare all'Eterno e offrí olocausti e sacrifici di ringraziamento. Cosí l'Eterno diede ascolto alla preghiera fatta per il paese e la calamità fu allontanata dal popolo d'Israele.

Il censimento d'Israele. La peste
24 (A)Il Signore si accese di nuovo d'ira contro *Israele, e incitò *Davide contro il popolo, dicendo: «Va' e fa' il censimento d'Israele e di *Giuda».
2 Il re disse a *Ioab, che era capo dell'esercito e che era con lui: «Gira per tutte le tribú d'Israele, da *Dan fino a Beer-Sceba, e fate il censimento del popolo perché io ne sappia il numero». 3 Ioab rispose al re: «Il Signore, il Dio tuo, renda il popolo cento volte piú numeroso di quello che è, e faccia sí che gli occhi del re, mio signore, possano vederlo! Ma perché il re mio signore prende piacere nel far questo?» 4 Ma l'ordine del re prevalse contro Ioab e contro i capi dell'esercito, e Ioab e i capi dell'esercito partirono dalla presenza del re per andare a fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.

10 (B)Dopo che Davide ebbe fatto il censimento del popolo, provò un rimorso al cuore, e disse al Signore: «Ho gravemente peccato in quel che ho fatto; ma ora, o Signore, perdona l'*iniquità del tuo servo, perché ho agito con grande stoltezza».
11 Quando Davide si alzò la mattina, la parola del Signore fu cosí rivolta al *profeta *Gad, il *veggente di Davide: 12 «Va' a dire a Davide: “Cosí dice il Signore: Io ti propongo tre cose: scegline una e quella ti farò”». 13 Gad andò dunque da Davide, gli riferí questo e disse: «Vuoi sette[a] anni di carestia nel tuo paese, oppure tre mesi di fuga davanti ai tuoi nemici che t'inseguono, oppure tre giorni di peste nel tuo paese? Ora rifletti e vedi che cosa devo rispondere a colui che mi ha mandato». 14 Davide disse a Gad: «Io sono in una grande angoscia! Ebbene, cadiamo nelle mani del Signore, perché le sue compassioni sono immense; ma che io non cada nelle mani degli uomini!»

Sacrificio offerto da Davide
18 (C)Quel giorno Gad andò da Davide e gli disse: «Sali, erigi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Arauna, il Gebuseo». 19 Davide salí, secondo la parola di Gad, come il Signore aveva comandato. 20 Arauna guardò e vide il re e i suoi servitori, che si dirigevano verso di lui; Arauna uscí e si prostrò davanti al re, con la faccia a terra. 21 Poi Arauna disse: «Perché il re mio signore viene dal suo servo?» Davide rispose: «Per comprare da te quest'aia e costruirvi un altare al Signore, affinché il flagello cessi d'infierire sul popolo». 22 Arauna disse a Davide: «Il re, mio signore, prenda e offra quello che gli piacerà! Ecco i buoi per l'olocausto; gli attrezzi per trebbiare e i gioghi dei buoi serviranno da legna. 23 Tutte queste cose, o re, Arauna te le dà». Poi Arauna disse al re: «Il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti sia propizio!» 24 Ma il re rispose ad Arauna: «No, io comprerò da te queste cose per il loro prezzo e non offrirò al Signore, al mio Dio, olocausti che non mi costino nulla». Davide comprò l'aia e i buoi per cinquanta *sicli d'argento; 25 costruí là un altare al Signore e offrí olocausti e sacrifici di riconoscenza.
Cosí il Signore fu placato verso il paese, e il flagello cessò d'infierire sul popolo.

David Enrolls the Fighting Men(A)
24 Again(B) the anger of the Lord burned against Israel,(C) and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of(D) Israel and Judah.”
2 So the king said to Joab(E) and the army commanders[a] with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba(F) and enroll(G) the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab(H) replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over,(I) and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.
5 After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer,(J) south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer.(K) 6 They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon.(L) 7 Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre(M) and all the towns of the Hivites(N) and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba(O) in the Negev(P) of Judah.
8 After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.(Q)
10 David was conscience-stricken(R) after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned(S) greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.(T)”
11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad(U) the prophet, David’s seer:(V) 12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three[b] years of famine(W) in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague(X) in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
14 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(Y) is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
15 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.(Z) 16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented(AA) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord(AB) was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, “I have sinned; I, the shepherd,[c] have done wrong. These are but sheep.(AC) What have they done?(AD) Let your hand fall on me and my family.”(AE)
David Builds an Altar(AF)
18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah(AG) the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.
21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
“To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped.”(AH)
22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen(AI) for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 Your Majesty, Araunah[d] gives(AJ) all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the Lord your God accept you.”
24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”(AK)
So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels[e](AL) of silver for them. 25 David built an altar(AM) to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer(AN) in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
