David’s Further Conquests(A)

8 After this it came to pass that David [a]attacked the Philistines and subdued them. And David took [b]Metheg Ammah from the hand of the Philistines.

2 Then (B)he defeated Moab. Forcing them down to the ground, he measured them off with a line. With two lines he measured off those to be put to death, and with one full line those to be kept alive. So the Moabites became David’s (C)servants, and (D)brought tribute.

3 David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (E)Zobah, as he went to recover (F)his territory at the River Euphrates. 4 David took from him one thousand chariots, [c]seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David (G)hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots.

5 (H)When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. So (I)the Lord preserved David wherever he went. 7 And David took (J)the shields of gold that had belonged to the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from [d]Betah and from (K)Berothai,[e] cities of Hadadezer, King David took a large amount of bronze.

9 When [f]Toi king of (L)Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 then Toi sent [g]Joram his son to King David, to [h]greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi); and Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11 King David also (M)dedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued— 12 from [i]Syria, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the (N)Philistines, from Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David made himself a (O)name when he returned from killing (P)eighteen thousand [j]Syrians in (Q)the Valley of Salt. 14 He also put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and (R)all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David wherever he went.

David’s Administration(S)

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered judgment and justice to all his people. 16 (T)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; (U)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 17 (V)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; [k]Seraiah was the [l]scribe; 18 (W)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the (X)Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were [m]chief ministers.

8 (A)Now it happened afterward that David [a]defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took [b]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.

2 (B)And He [c]defeated (C)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and a full line to keep alive. And (D)the Moabites became servants to David, (E)bringing tribute.

3 Then David [d]defeated (F)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as (G)he went to restore his [e]power at the Euphrates River. 4 And David captured from him [f]1,700 horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David (H)hamstrung almost all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for a hundred chariots. 5 When (I)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David [g]killed twenty-two thousand men among the Arameans. 6 Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus, and (J)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And (K)the Lord helped David wherever he went. 7 David took the shields of gold which were [h]carried by the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 And from [i]Betah and (L)Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very large amount of bronze.

9 Now when Toi king of (M)Hamath heard that David had [j]defeated the whole army of Hadadezer, 10 Toi sent his son [k]Joram to King David to [l]greet him and bless him, because he had fought Hadadezer and [m]defeated him; for Hadadezer [n]had been at war with Toi. And [o]Joram brought with him articles of silver, gold, and bronze. 11 King David also (N)consecrated these gifts to the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had consecrated from all the nations which he had subdued: 12 from [p]Aram, (O)Moab, (P)the sons of Ammon, (Q)the Philistines, (R)Amalek, and from the spoils of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 So (S)David made a name for himself when he returned from [q]killing eighteen thousand [r]Arameans in (T)the Valley of Salt. 14 He also put garrisons in Edom. In all Edom he put garrisons, and (U)all the Edomites became servants to David. And (V)the Lord helped David wherever he went.

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David [s]administered justice and righteousness for all his people. 16 (W)Joab the son of Zeruiah was commander over the army, and (X)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was (Y)secretary. 17 (Z)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were (AA)priests, and Seraiah was (AB)scribe. 18 (AC)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [t]was over the (AD)Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were [u](AE)chief ministers.

8 (A)Dopo queste cose, *Davide sconfisse i *Filistei, li umiliò e tolse loro la supremazia che avevano.

2 Sconfisse pure i *Moabiti: e, fattili stendere per terra, li misurò con una corda; ne misurò due corde per metterli a morte e una corda intera per lasciarli in vita. I Moabiti divennero sudditi e tributari di Davide.

3 Davide sconfisse anche Adadezer, figlio di Reob, re di Soba, mentre andava a ristabilire il suo dominio sul fiume Eufrate. 4 Davide gli prese millesettecento cavalieri e ventimila fanti; tagliò i garretti a tutti i cavalli da tiro, ma risparmiò dei cavalli per cento carri.

5 Quando i *Siri di *Damasco vennero per soccorrere Adadezer, re di Soba, Davide ne uccise ventiduemila. 6 Poi Davide mise delle guarnigioni nella Siria di Damasco e i Siri divennero sudditi e tributari di Davide. Il Signore rendeva Davide vittorioso dovunque egli andava. 7 Davide tolse ai servi di Adadezer i loro scudi d'oro e li portò a *Gerusalemme. 8 Il re Davide prese anche una gran quantità di rame a Betà e a Berotai, città di Adadezer.

9 Quando Toi, re di Camat, udí che Davide aveva sconfitto tutto l'esercito di Adadezer, 10 mandò al re Davide Ioram, suo figlio, per salutarlo e per congratularsi con lui perché aveva affrontato Adadezer e lo aveva sconfitto (Adadezer era sempre in guerra con Toi); Ioram portò con sé dei vasi d'argento, dei vasi d'oro e dei vasi di rame. 11 Il re Davide consacrò anche quelli al Signore, come aveva già consacrato l'argento e l'oro tolto alle nazioni che aveva soggiogate: 12 ai Siri, ai Moabiti, agli *Ammoniti, ai Filistei, agli *Amalechiti; e come aveva fatto del bottino di Adadezer, figlio di Reob, re di Soba.

13 Al ritorno dalla sua vittoria sui Siri, Davide si acquistò ancora fama sconfiggendo nella valle del Sale diciottomila *Idumei. 14 Pose delle guarnigioni in Idumea; ne mise per tutta l'Idumea e tutti gli Edomiti divennero sudditi di Davide e il Signore rendeva Davide vittorioso dovunque egli andava.

15 (B)Davide regnò su tutto *Israele, amministrando il diritto e la giustizia a tutto il suo popolo. 16 *Ioab, figlio di Seruia, comandava l'esercito; Giosafat, figlio di Ailud, era cancelliere; 17 *Sadoc, figlio di Achitub, e Achimelec, figlio di *Abiatar, erano *sacerdoti; Seraia era segretario; 18 Benaia, figlio di Ieoiada, era capo dei Cheretei e dei Peletei, e i figli di Davide erano ministri.
