David’s Oracle

23 This was David’s last composition:

The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
    an oracle by the valiant one who was exalted—
anointed by the God of Jacob,
    the contented psalm writer of Israel.

2 The Spirit of the Lord speaks within[a] me;
    his word is on my tongue!
3 The God of Israel has spoken;
    the Rock of Israel has talked to me.
“When one is governing men justly,
    he fears God while governing.
4 He is like dawn’s first[b] light,
    like bright sun blazing on a cloudless morning,
        glistening on grassland that flourishes after a rain shower.

5 Is not my dynasty[c] like this with God?
    Has he not made an eternal covenant with me,
        preparing every detail of it?
And he has made it secure,
    including my complete[d] salvation, has he not?
He has been of continual [e] help, has he not,
    even with respect to all of my desires?

6 But ungodly men[f] are like thorns that are discarded
    because they cannot be safely[g] handled.
7 Whoever handles them
    wears heavy duty clothing,[h]
carries strong tools,[i]
    and burns them to ashes on the spot![j]

David’s Elite Soldiers(A)

8 Here’s a list of the names of David’s special forces: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahkemonite[k] was head of the Three;[l] he was nicknamed Adino the Eznite[m] because he killed 800 men in a single battle engagement.

9 Next was Dodai[n] the Ahohite’s son Eleazar. Eleazar, who also was one of the Three, was with David when they challenged the Philistines. When the Philistines had assembled in battle array, the Israeli army retreated, 10 but Eleazar remained standing right where he was and fought so hard against the Philistines that he became exhausted—he couldn’t even let go of his sword! The Lord magnificently delivered them that day. After Eleazar had won the battle, the other soldiers returned, but only to strip the weapons and armor from the dead.[o]

11 Next was Shammah, Agee the Hararite’s son. One time the Philistines assembled to fight[p] in a field where lentils had been growing. Israel’s army retreated from the Philistines, 12 but Shammah stood his ground in the middle of the field, defended it, and killed the Philistines. And the Lord brought about a great victory.

13 One day while the Philistine army was camping in the valley of giants,[q] three of the 30 leaders joined David at the cave of Adullam. 14 David was living in that stronghold at the time, while a Philistine garrison was then at Bethlehem.

15 David expressed his longing, “Oh, how I wish someone would get me a drink of water from the Bethlehem well that’s by the city gate!” 16 So the Three elite warriors broke through the Philistine ranks, drew some water from the Bethlehem well that was next to the city gate, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out in the Lord’s presence, 17 and said, “The Lord forbid that I drink this—this is the blood of men who endangered their own lives!” The Three elite warriors did these things.

David’s Other Valiant Soldiers(B)

18 Zeruiah’s son Abishai, Joab’s brother, was the lieutenant[r] in charge of the platoons.[s] He used his spear to fight and kill 300 men, gaining a reputation distinct from the Three. 19 He was more well-known than the Three, and became their commander, but he never measured up to[t] the Three.

20 Jehoiada’s son Benaiah, who was a valiant man, accomplished great things. He was from Kabzeel. He killed two men named[u] Ariel from Moab[v] and then he also went down into a pit and struck down a lion during a snow storm one day. 21 He also killed a soldier[w] from Egypt. Of handsome appearance, the Egyptian carried a spear, but Benaiah attacked him with a staff, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 Benaiah did things like this and gained a reputation comparable to the Three warriors. 23 He was well known among the platoons, but he didn’t measure up to[x] the Three. David placed him in charge of his security detail.

24 Among the Thirty were Joab’s brother Asahel, Dodo’s son Elhanan of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah from Harod; Elika from Harod, 26 Helez the Paltite,[y] Ikkesh’s son Ira from Tekoa, 27 Abiezer from Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah, 29 Baanah’s son Heleb from Netophah, Ribai’s son Ittai from Gibeah of the descendants of Benjamin, 30 Benaiah from Pirathon, Hiddai from the Gaash creeks area,[z] 31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth from Bahurim, 32 Eliahba from Shaalbon, Jashen’s sons, 33 Shammah’s son from Harar, Sharar the Hararite’s son Ahiam, 34 Ahasbai the Maacathite’s son Eliphelet, Ahithophel the Gilonite’s son Eliam,[aa] 35 Hezro from Carmel, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Nathan’s son Igal from Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai from Beeroth (the armor-bearer for Zeruiah’s son Joab), 38 Ira the Ithrite,[ab] Gareb the Ithrite, 39 and Uriah the Hittite—for a total of 37.

23 These are David’s last words:

This is the declaration of Jesse’s son David,
    the declaration of a man raised high,
    a man anointed by the God of Jacob,
    a man favored by the strong one of Israel.[a]
2 The Lord’s spirit speaks through me;
    his word is on my tongue.
3 Israel’s God has spoken,
    Israel’s rock said to me:
“Whoever rules rightly over people,
    whoever rules in the fear of God,
4     is like the light of sunrise
    on a morning with no clouds,
        like the bright gleam after the rain
        that brings grass from the ground.”
5 Yes, my house is this way with God![b]
    He has made an eternal covenant with me,
    laid out and secure in every detail.
Yes, he provides every one of my victories
    and brings my every desire to pass.
6 But despicable people are like thorns,
    all of them good for nothing,
    because they can’t be carried by hand.
7 No one can touch them,
except with iron bar or the shaft of a spear.
    They must be burned up with fire right on the spot!

David’s warriors

8 These are the names of David’s warriors: Jeshbaal[c] from Hachmon[d] was chief of the Three.[e] He raised his spear[f] against eight hundred, killing them on a single occasion.

9 Next in command was Eleazar, Dodo’s son and Ahohi’s grandson. He was among the three warriors with David when they insulted the Philistines who had gathered there for battle. The Israelites retreated, 10 but he stood his ground and fought the Philistines until his hand was weary and stuck to the sword. But the Lord accomplished a great victory that day. The troops then returned to Eleazar, but only to plunder the dead.

11 Next in command was Agee’s son Shammah, who was from Harar. The Philistines had gathered at Lehi, where there was a plot of land full of lentils. The troops fled from the Philistines, 12 but Shammah took a position in the middle of the plot, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. The Lord accomplished a great victory.

13 At harvesttime, three of the thirty chiefs went down and joined David at the fortress[g] of Adullam, while a force of Philistines were camped in the Rephaim Valley. 14 At that time, David was in the fortress, and a Philistine fort was in Bethlehem. 15 David had a craving and said, “If only someone could give me a drink of water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem.” 16 So the three warriors broke through the Philistine camp and drew water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it and poured it out to the Lord.

17 “The Lord forbid that I should do that,” he said. “Isn’t this the blood of men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it.

These were the kinds of things the three warriors did.

18 Now Zeruiah’s son Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Thirty.[h] He raised his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and made a name for himself along with the Three. 19 He was the most famous of the Thirty.[i] He became their commander, but he wasn’t among the Three.

20 Jehoiada’s son Benaiah was a hero from Kabzeel who performed great deeds. He killed the two sons[j] of Ariel from Moab. He once went down into a pit and killed a lion on a snowy day. 21 He also killed a giant[k] Egyptian who had a spear in his hand. Benaiah went against him armed with a staff. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 These were the kinds of things Jehoiada’s son Benaiah did. He made a name for himself along with the three warriors. 23 He was famous among the Thirty, but he didn’t become one of the Three. David placed him in command of his own bodyguard.

24 Among the Thirty were:

Asahel, Joab’s brother;

Elhanan, Dodo’s son from Bethlehem;

25 Shammah from Harod;

Elika from Harod;

26 Helez from Pelet;

Ira, Ikkesh’s son from Tekoa;

27 Abiezer from Anathoth;

Mebunnai the Hushathite;

28 Zalmon from Ahoh;

Maharai from Netophah;

29 Heleb, Baanah’s son from Netophah;

Ittai, Ribai’s son from Gibeah in Benjamin;

30 Benaiah from Pirathon;

Hiddai from the Gaash ravines;

31 Abi-albon from the desert plain;

Azmaveth from Bahurim;

32 Eliahba from Shaalbon;

Jashen the Gizonite;[l]

Ang Maisog nga mga Tinawo ni David(A)

8 Amo ini ang maisog nga mga tinawo ni David:

Si Josheb Bashebet nga taga-Takemon, nga amo ang nagapanguna sa tatlo ka maisog nga mga tinawo ni David. Sa isa lang ka inaway, nakapatay siya sang 800 ka tawo paagi sa iya bangkaw.

9 Ang sunod sa iya amo si Eleazar nga anak ni Dodai nga kaliwat ni Ahoa, nga isa man sa tatlo ka maisog nga mga tinawo ni David. Isa siya sa mga kaupod ni David nga naghangkat sa mga Filistinhon nga nagtipon sa Pas Damim[b] sa pagpakig-away. 11 Ang sunod pa gid amo si Shama nga anak ni Agee nga taga-Harar. Isa ka tion, nagtipon ang mga Filistinhon sa Lehi, kag ginsalakay nila ang mga Israelinhon sa may uma nga puno sang balatong. Nagpalalagyo ang mga Israelinhon, 12 pero si Shama iya nagpabilin sa tunga sang uma kag ginprotektaran niya ini. Ginpamatay niya ang mga Filistinhon kag ginpadaog sila sang Ginoo sadto nga adlaw.

13 Isa ka tion sang tig-alani, nagkadto kay David ang tatlo niya ka tinawo didto sa kuweba sang Adulam. Ini sila nga tatlo miyembro sang 30 ka maisog nga mga tinawo ni David. Nagakampo sadto ang mga Filistinhon sa Kapatagan sang Refaim 14 kag naagaw nila ang Betlehem. Samtang didto si David sa isa ka mabakod nga palanaguan, 15 gin-uhaw siya. Nagsiling siya, “Maayo kuntani kon may magkuha para sa akon sang tubig nga mainom didto sa bubon malapit sa puwertahan sang Betlehem.” 16 Gani nagsulod sing tago atong tatlo ka maisog nga mga tawo sa kampo sang mga Filistinhon kag nagkuha sila sang tubig sa bubon malapit sa puwertahan sang Betlehem kag gindala kay David. Pero indi mag-inom si David; sa baylo, gin-ula niya ini bilang halad sa Ginoo. 17 Nagsiling siya, “Ginoo, indi ko gid ini mainom tungod kay pareho ini kamahal sa dugo sang mga tawo nga nagtaya sang ila kabuhi sa pagkuha sini.” Gani indi gid mag-inom si David.

18 Si Abishai nga utod ni Joab, nga anak ni Zeruya amo ang pangulo sang 30[c] ka maisog nga mga tinawo ni David. Nakapatay siya sang 300 ka Filistinhon paagi sa iya bangkaw. Gani nangin bantog siya pareho sadtong tatlo ka maisog nga mga tawo. 19 Kag tungod nga siya ang pinakabantog sa iya kaupod nga 30,[d] siya ang nangin kumander nila, pero indi siya kaupod sadtong tatlo ka maisog.

20 May isa pa ka maisog nga tawo nga ang iya ngalan si Benaya. Taga-Kabzeel siya, kag ang iya amay amo si Jehoyada. Naghimo siya sang pinasahi nga mga buhat, lakip na ang pagpatay sa duha ka pinakamaayo nga soldado sang Moab. Sa isa man ka tion, ginlagas niya ang isa ka leon. Bisan nagasnow kag madanlog, nagpanaog siya sa buho kag ginpatay niya ang leon. 21 Sa isa pa gid ka tion, ginpatay niya ang isa ka Egiptohanon nga puwerte kadako. Ang armas sang Egiptohanon bangkaw, pero ang iya armas inuglampos lang. Gin-agaw niya ang bangkaw sa Egiptohanon kag amo ini ang ginpatay sa iya. 22 Amo ato ang mga ginhimo ni Benaya nga anak ni Jehoyada. Nangin bantog man siya pareho sa tatlo ka maisog nga mga tawo, 23 pero indi siya bahin nila. Kag tungod nga siya ang pinakabantog sa iya kaupod nga 30, ginhimo siya ni David nga pangulo sang iya mga badigard.

24 Amo ini ang iban nga mga miyembro sang 30 ka maisog nga mga tawo:

si Asahel nga utod ni Joab;

si Elhanan nga anak ni Dodo nga taga-Betlehem;

25 si Shama kag si Elika nga mga taga-Harod;

26 si Helez nga taga-Palti;

    the hero of Israel’s songs:

2 “The Spirit(C) of the Lord spoke through me;
    his word was on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel spoke,
    the Rock(D) of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,(E)
    when he rules in the fear(F) of God,(G)
4 he is like the light(H) of morning(I) at sunrise(J)
    on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain(K)
    that brings grass from the earth.’

5 “If my house were not right with God,
    surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,(L)
    arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
    and grant me my every desire.
6 But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,(M)
    which are not gathered with the hand.
7 Whoever touches thorns
    uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
    they are burned up where they lie.”

David’s Mighty Warriors(N)

13 During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam,(S) while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.(T) 14 At that time David was in the stronghold,(U) and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.(V) 15 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 16 So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured(W) it out before the Lord. 17 “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood(X) of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.

Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

18 Abishai(Y) the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three.[e] He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19 Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.

20 Benaiah(Z) son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel,(AA) performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21 And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 23 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

24 Among the Thirty were:

Asahel(AB) the brother of Joab,

Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

25 Shammah the Harodite,(AC)

Elika the Harodite,

26 Helez(AD) the Paltite,

Ira(AE) son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,

27 Abiezer(AF) from Anathoth,(AG)

Sibbekai[f] the Hushathite,

28 Zalmon the Ahohite,

Maharai(AH) the Netophathite,(AI)

29 Heled[g](AJ) son of Baanah the Netophathite,

Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah(AK) in Benjamin,

30 Benaiah the Pirathonite,(AL)

Hiddai[h] from the ravines of Gaash,(AM)

31 Abi-Albon the Arbathite,

Azmaveth the Barhumite,(AN)

32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

the sons of Jashen,

Jonathan 33 son of[i] Shammah the Hararite,

Ahiam son of Sharar[j] the Hararite,

34 Eliphelet son of Ahasbai the Maakathite,(AO)

Eliam(AP) son of Ahithophel(AQ) the Gilonite,

35 Hezro the Carmelite,(AR)

Paarai the Arbite,

36 Igal son of Nathan from Zobah,(AS)

the son of Hagri,[k]

37 Zelek the Ammonite,

Naharai the Beerothite,(AT) the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,

38 Ira the Ithrite,(AU)

Gareb the Ithrite

39 and Uriah(AV) the Hittite.

There were thirty-seven in all.
