22 And David speaketh to Jehovah the words of this song in the day Jehovah hath delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul,
2 and he saith: `Jehovah [is] my rock, And my bulwark, and a deliverer to me,
3 My God [is] my rock -- I take refuge in Him; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, My high tower, and my refuge! My Saviour, from violence Thou savest me!
4 The Praised One, I call Jehovah: And from mine enemies I am saved.
5 When the breakers of death compassed me, The streams of the worthless terrify me,
6 The cords of Sheol have surrounded me, Before me have been the snares of death.
7 In mine adversity I call Jehovah, And unto my God I call, And He heareth from His temple my voice, And my cry [is] in His ears,
8 And shake and tremble doth the earth, Foundations of the heavens are troubled, And are shaken, for He hath wrath!
9 Gone up hath smoke by His nostrils. And fire from His mouth devoureth, Brands have been kindled by it.
10 And He inclineth heaven, and cometh down, And thick darkness [is] under His feet.
11 And He rideth on a cherub, and doth fly, And is seen on the wings of the wind.
12 And He setteth darkness Round about Him -- tabernacles, Darkness of waters -- thick clouds of the skies.
13 From the brightness before Him Were brands of fire kindled!
14 Thunder from the heavens doth Jehovah, And the Most High giveth forth His voice.
15 And He sendeth forth arrows, And scattereth them; Lightning, and troubleth them;
16 And seen are the streams of the sea, Revealed are foundations of the world, By the rebuke of Jehovah, From the breath of the spirit of His anger.
17 He sendeth from above -- He taketh me, He draweth me out of many waters.
18 He delivereth me from my strong enemy, From those hating me, For they were stronger than I.
19 They are before me in a day of my calamity, And Jehovah is my support,
20 And He bringeth me out to a large place, He draweth me out for He delighted in me.
21 Jehovah recompenseth me, According to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands, He doth return to me.
22 For I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not done wickedly against my God.
23 For all His judgments [are] before me, As to His statutes, I turn not from them.
24 And I am perfect before Him, And I keep myself from mine iniquity.
25 And Jehovah returneth to me, According to my righteousness, According to my cleanness before His eyes.
26 With the kind Thou shewest Thyself kind, With the perfect man Thou shewest Thyself perfect,
27 With the pure Thou shewest Thyself pure, And with the perverse Thou shewest Thyself a wrestler.
28 And the poor people Thou dost save, And Thine eyes on the high causest to fall.
29 For Thou [art] my lamp, O Jehovah, And Jehovah doth lighten my darkness.
30 For by Thee I run -- a troop, By my God I leap a wall.
31 God! Perfect [is] His way, The saying of Jehovah is tried, A shield He [is] to all those trusting in Him.
32 For who is God save Jehovah? And who a Rock save our God?
33 God -- my bulwark, [my] strength, And He maketh perfect my way;
34 Making my feet like hinds, And on my high places causeth me to stand,
35 Teaching my hands for battle, And brought down was a bow of brass by mine arms,
36 And Thou givest to me the shield of Thy salvation, And Thy lowliness maketh me great.
37 Thou enlargest my step under me, And mine ankles have not slidden.
38 I pursue mine enemies and destroy them, And I turn not till they are consumed.
39 And I consume them, and smite them, And they rise not, and fall under my feet.
40 And Thou girdest me [with] strength for battle, Thou causest my withstanders to bow under me.
41 And mine enemies -- Thou givest to me the neck, Those hating me -- and I cut them off.
42 They look, and there is no saviour; Unto Jehovah, and He hath not answered them.
43 And I beat them as dust of the earth, As mire of the streets I beat them small -- I spread them out!
44 And -- Thou dost deliver me From the strivings of my people, Thou placest me for a head of nations; A people I have not known do serve me.
45 Sons of a stranger feign obedience to me, At the hearing of the ear they hearken to me.
46 Sons of a stranger fade away, And gird themselves by their close places.
47 Jehovah liveth, and blessed [is] my Rock, And exalted is my God -- The Rock of my salvation.
48 God -- who is giving vengeance to me, And bringing down peoples under me,
49 And bringing me forth from mine enemies, Yea, above my withstanders Thou raisest me up. From a man of violence Thou deliverest me.
50 Therefore I confess Thee, O Jehovah, among nations. And to Thy name I sing praise.
51 Magnifying the salvations of His king, And doing loving-kindness to His anointed, To David, and to his seed -- unto the age!'

22 (A)*Davide rivolse al Signore le parole di questo canto quando il Signore lo liberò dalla mano di tutti i suoi nemici e dalla mano di *Saul. Egli disse:
2 «Il Signore è la mia ròcca, la mia fortezza, il mio liberatore;
3 il mio Dio, la mia rupe, in cui mi rifugio,
il mio scudo, il mio potente salvatore[a],
il mio alto rifugio, il mio asilo.
O mio salvatore, tu mi salvi dalla violenza!
4 Io invocai il Signore che è degno di ogni lode
e fui salvato dai miei nemici.
5 Le onde della morte mi avevano circondato
e i torrenti della distruzione mi avevano spaventato.
6 I legami del *soggiorno dei morti mi avevano attorniato,
i lacci della morte mi avevano sorpreso.
7 Nella mia angoscia invocai il Signore,
gridai al mio Dio.
Egli udí la mia voce dal suo tempio.
Il mio grido giunse ai suoi orecchi.
8 Allora la terra fu scossa e tremò,
le fondamenta dei cieli furono smosse e scrollate,
perché egli era colmo di sdegno.
9 Un fumo saliva dalle sue narici;
un fuoco consumante gli usciva dalla bocca,
e ne venivano fuori carboni accesi.
10 Egli abbassò i cieli e discese,
avendo sotto i piedi una densa caligine.
11 Cavalcava un *cherubino e volava;
appariva sulle ali del vento.
12 Delle tenebre s'era fatto una tenda,
s'era circondato di masse d'acqua e di dense nubi.
13 Dallo splendore che lo precedeva si sprigionavano carboni accesi.
14 Il Signore tonò dai cieli.
L'Altissimo fece udire la sua voce.
15 Scagliò frecce e disperse i nemici;
lanciò folgori e li mise in rotta.
16 Allora apparve il fondo del mare,
e le fondamenta del mondo furono scoperte
dal rimprovero del Signore,
al soffio del vento delle sue narici.
17 Egli tese dall'alto la mano e mi prese,
mi trasse fuori dalle grandi acque.
18 Mi liberò dal mio potente nemico,
e da quelli che mi odiavano; perché erano piú forti di me.
19 Essi mi erano piombati addosso nel giorno della mia calamità,
ma il Signore fu il mio sostegno.
20 Egli mi trasse fuori al largo,
mi liberò perché mi gradisce.
21 Il Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia,
mi ha reso secondo la purezza delle mie mani,
22 perché ho osservato le vie del Signore
e non mi sono empiamente sviato dal mio Dio.
23 Infatti ho tenuto tutte le sue leggi davanti a me,
e non mi sono allontanato dai suoi precetti.
24 Sono stato integro verso di lui
e mi sono guardato dalla mia *iniquità.
25 Perciò il Signore mi ha ripagato secondo la mia giustizia,

26 Tu ti mostri leale verso chi è leale,

39 Li ho annientati, schiacciati; non sono risorti;
sono caduti sotto i miei piedi.
40 Tu mi hai cinto di forza per la guerra,

41 hai fatto voltare le spalle davanti a me ai miei nemici;
ho distrutto quelli che mi odiavano.
42 Hanno gridato aiuto, ma nessuno li ha salvati;
hanno gridato al Signore, ma egli non ha risposto.
43 Io li ho tritati come polvere della terra,
li ho pestati, calpestati, come il fango delle strade.
44 Tu mi hai liberato dal mio popolo in rivolta,
mi hai conservato capo di nazioni;
un popolo che non conoscevo mi è stato sottomesso.
45 I figli degli stranieri mi hanno reso omaggio,
al solo udire parlare di me, mi hanno ubbidito.
46 I figli degli stranieri si son persi d'animo,
sono usciti tremanti dai loro nascondigli.
47 Viva il Signore! Sia benedetta la mia Ròcca!
Sia esaltato Dio, la ròcca della mia salvezza,
48 il Dio che fa la mia vendetta
e mi sottomette i popoli,
49 che mi libera dai miei nemici.
Sí, tu m'innalzi sopra i miei avversari,
mi salvi dall'uomo violento.

David’s Song of Praise(A)
22 David sang(B) to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said:
“The Lord is my rock,(C) my fortress(D) and my deliverer;(E)
3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,(F)
my shield[a](G) and the horn[b](H) of my salvation.
He is my stronghold,(I) my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.
4 “I called to the Lord, who is worthy(J) of praise,
and have been saved from my enemies.
5 The waves(K) of death swirled about me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
6 The cords of the grave(L) coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.
7 “In my distress(M) I called(N) to the Lord;
I called out to my God.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came to his ears.
8 The earth(O) trembled and quaked,(P)
the foundations(Q) of the heavens[c] shook;
they trembled because he was angry.
9 Smoke rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire(R) came from his mouth,
burning coals(S) blazed out of it.
10 He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds(T) were under his feet.
11 He mounted the cherubim(U) and flew;
he soared[d] on the wings of the wind.(V)
12 He made darkness(W) his canopy around him—
the dark[e] rain clouds of the sky.
13 Out of the brightness of his presence
bolts of lightning(X) blazed forth.
14 The Lord thundered(Y) from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.
15 He shot his arrows(Z) and scattered the enemy,
with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
16 The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at the rebuke(AA) of the Lord,
at the blast(AB) of breath from his nostrils.
17 “He reached down from on high(AC) and took hold of me;
he drew(AD) me out of deep waters.
18 He rescued(AE) me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.(AF)
20 He brought me out into a spacious(AG) place;
he rescued(AH) me because he delighted(AI) in me.(AJ)
21 “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;(AK)
according to the cleanness(AL) of my hands(AM) he has rewarded me.
22 For I have kept(AN) the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
23 All his laws are before me;(AO)
I have not turned(AP) away from his decrees.
24 I have been blameless(AQ) before him
and have kept myself from sin.
25 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,(AR)
according to my cleanness[f] in his sight.
26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
27 to the pure(AS) you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.(AT)
28 You save the humble,(AU)
but your eyes are on the haughty(AV) to bring them low.(AW)
29 You, Lord, are my lamp;(AX)
the Lord turns my darkness into light.
30 With your help I can advance against a troop[g];
with my God I can scale a wall.
31 “As for God, his way is perfect:(AY)
The Lord’s word is flawless;(AZ)
he shields(BA) all who take refuge in him.
32 For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock(BB) except our God?(BC)
33 It is God who arms me with strength[h]
and keeps my way secure.
34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;(BD)
he causes me to stand on the heights.(BE)
35 He trains my hands(BF) for battle;
my arms can bend a bow(BG) of bronze.
36 You make your saving help my shield;(BH)
your help has made[i] me great.
37 You provide a broad path(BI) for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.
38 “I pursued my enemies and crushed them;
I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
39 I crushed(BJ) them completely, and they could not rise;
they fell beneath my feet.
40 You armed me with strength for battle;
you humbled my adversaries before me.(BK)
41 You made my enemies turn their backs(BL) in flight,
and I destroyed my foes.
42 They cried for help,(BM) but there was no one to save them—(BN)
to the Lord, but he did not answer.(BO)
43 I beat them as fine as the dust(BP) of the earth;
I pounded and trampled(BQ) them like mud(BR) in the streets.
44 “You have delivered(BS) me from the attacks of the peoples;
you have preserved(BT) me as the head of nations.
People(BU) I did not know now serve me,
45 foreigners cower(BV) before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.(BW)
46 They all lose heart;
they come trembling[j](BX) from their strongholds.
47 “The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted(BY) be my God, the Rock, my Savior!(BZ)
48 He is the God who avenges(CA) me,(CB)
who puts the nations under me,
49 who sets me free from my enemies.(CC)
You exalted me(CD) above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.
50 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing the praises(CE) of your name.(CF)
