2 Después de esto, David consultó a Dios:
—¿Puedo regresar a alguno de los pueblos de Judá?
Y Dios respondió:
—Claro que puedes regresar.
Pero David insistió:
—¿Y a qué pueblo iré?
Y Dios le contestó:
—Ve a Hebrón.
2 Y David se fue a Hebrón con Ahinoám y Abigail, que eran sus dos esposas. Ahinoám era del pueblo de Jezreel, y Abigail había sido esposa de Nabal. 3 David se llevó también a sus soldados con sus familias, y todos ellos vivieron en los pueblos cercanos a Hebrón.
4 Entonces la gente de Judá fue a donde estaba David y le derramó aceite sobre la cabeza. Así lo declararon rey de Judá. Y como le informaron que la gente de Jabés de Galaad había enterrado a Saúl, 5 David envió a los de Jabés este mensaje:
6 «Que Dios los bendiga por ser tan fieles al rey, pues hasta lo enterraron. Que Dios los trate siempre con mucho amor, y que nunca los abandone. Yo también haré lo mismo por el bien que han hecho. 7 Así que anímense y sean valientes, porque aunque Saúl ha muerto, ya la gente de Judá me hizo rey».

8-10 Mientras tanto Abner, que era hijo de Ner y había sido jefe del ejército de Saúl, se llevó a Is-bóset al pueblo de Mahanaim. Como Is-bóset era hijo de Saúl, allí lo declaró rey de todo Israel. Así fue como Is-bóset reinó sobre Galaad, Gesuri, Jezreel, Efraín y Benjamín. Is-bóset tenía cuarenta años de edad cuando comenzó a reinar, pero sólo reinó dos años.
Los únicos que reconocieron a David como rey fueron los de Judá. 11 Por eso David se quedó en Hebrón, y fue rey de Judá durante siete años y medio.
12 Un día, Abner y los ayudantes de Is-bóset salieron de Mahanaim y fueron a Gabaón, 13 donde había un depósito de agua. Allí se encontraron con Joab hijo de Seruiá y con los ayudantes de David. Como los dos grupos estaban sentados uno frente al otro, 14 Abner desafió a Joab y le dijo:
—Deja que tus jóvenes peleen con los míos, para ver quiénes son mejores.
Joab aceptó el desafío, 15 y pasaron al frente doce jóvenes de parte de Benjamín y de Is-bóset, y doce de parte de David. 16 Cada uno agarró de la cabeza a su contrario, y le clavó la espada en las costillas, así que todos murieron al mismo tiempo. Desde entonces ese lugar, que está junto a Gabaón, se conoce como «Campo de las espadas».
17 El resto de los soldados comenzó a pelear, y los de David derrotaron a los de Abner. 18 Con Joab estaban sus hermanos Abisai y Asael. 19 Como Asael podía correr muy rápido, comenzó a perseguir a Abner. Y aunque encontraba a otros soldados enemigos, sólo perseguía a Abner. 20 Cuando Abner miró hacia atrás y lo vio, exclamó:
—¡Vaya, si eres tú, Asael!
Y él le contestó:
—¡Y quién más podría ser!
21 Entonces Abner le dijo:
—Si lo que quieres es quitarme la espada, te aconsejo que te busques a otro.
Asael no le hizo caso, ni dejó de perseguirlo. 22 Por eso Abner volvió a decirle:
—Si no dejas de perseguirme, tendré que matarte. ¿Y qué le voy a decir a tu hermano Joab?
23 Pero Asael siguió persiguiéndolo. Entonces Abner le clavó su lanza en el estómago, y lo atravesó de lado a lado.
Asael cayó muerto de inmediato, y todos los que llegaban a donde estaba tendido, se detenían a verlo. 24 Entonces Joab y Abisai se fueron tras Abner, y al anochecer llegaron a un cerro llamado Amá, que está frente a Guíah, en el camino al desierto de Gabaón. 25 Allí la gente de Benjamín se le unió a Abner, y se dispusieron a pelear en lo alto del cerro. 26 Pero Abner le gritó a Joab:
—Ya no nos matemos unos a otros. Ordénales a tus soldados que dejen de perseguirnos. Al fin de cuentas, somos hermanos, y lo único que vamos a sacar de todo esto es dolor y tristeza.
27 Joab le contestó:
—Te juro por Dios que, si no hubieras dicho nada, mis hombres te habrían perseguido, a ti y a los tuyos, hasta el amanecer.
28 Enseguida Joab tocó la trompeta, y sus soldados dejaron de perseguir a los israelitas. A partir de ese momento, dejaron de pelear con ellos. 29 Por su parte, Abner y su ejército caminaron toda esa noche por la llanura de Arabá. Cruzaron el río Jordán por el atajo de Bitrón, y finalmente llegaron a Mahanaim.
30 Cuando Joab reunió a toda su gente, notó que además de haber perdido a Asael también había perdido a otros diecinueve soldados de David. 31 Sin embargo, ellos habían matado a trescientos sesenta de la tribu de Benjamín que servían en el ejército de Abner.
32 Joab y su gente enterraron a Asael en la tumba de su padre, la cual está en Belén. De allí se fueron caminando toda la noche, y al día siguiente llegaron a Hebrón.

2 Así que David fue allá con sus dos esposas, Ajinoán la jezrelita y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal de Carmel. 3 Se llevó además a sus hombres, cada cual acompañado de su familia, y todos se establecieron en Hebrón y sus aldeas. 4 Entonces los habitantes de Judá fueron a Hebrón y allí ungieron a David como rey de su tribu. Además, le comunicaron que los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad habían sepultado a Saúl. 5 Entonces David envió a los de Jabés el siguiente mensaje: «Que el Señor los bendiga por haberle sido fieles a su señor Saúl y por darle sepultura. 6 Y ahora, que el Señor muestre a ustedes su amor y fidelidad, aunque yo también quiero recompensarlos por esto que han hecho. 7 Cobren ánimo y sean valientes, pues aunque su señor Saúl ha muerto, la tribu de Judá me ha ungido como su rey».

10 Isboset, hijo de Saúl, tenía cuarenta años cuando fue instaurado rey de Israel y reinó dos años. La tribu de Judá, por su parte, reconoció a David, 11 quien desde Hebrón reinó sobre la tribu de Judá durante siete años y seis meses.
12 Abner, hijo de Ner, salió de Majanayin con las tropas de Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y llegó a Gabaón. 13 Joab, hijo de Sarvia, por su parte, salió al frente de las tropas de David. Los dos ejércitos se encontraron en el estanque de Gabaón y tomaron posiciones en lados opuestos. 14 Entonces Abner dijo a Joab:
—Propongo que salgan unos cuantos jóvenes y midan sus armas en presencia de nosotros.
—De acuerdo —respondió Joab.
15 Así que pasaron al frente doce jóvenes del ejército benjamita de Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David. 16 Cada soldado agarró a su rival por la cabeza y le clavó la espada en el costado, de modo que ambos combatientes murieron al mismo tiempo. Por eso a aquel lugar, que queda cerca de Gabaón, se le llama Jelcat Hazurín.[a]
17 Aquel día la batalla fue muy dura y los siervos de David derrotaron a Abner y a los soldados de Israel.
18 Allí se encontraban Joab, Abisay y Asael, los tres hijos de Sarvia. Asael, que corría tan ligero como una gacela en campo abierto, 19 se lanzó tras Abner y lo persiguió sin vacilar. 20 Al mirar hacia atrás, Abner preguntó:
—¿Acaso no eres tú, Asael?
—¡Claro que sí! —respondió.
21 —¡Déjame tranquilo! —exclamó Abner—. Más te vale que agarres a algún otro y que te quedes con sus armas.
Pero Asael no hizo caso, 22 así que Abner advirtió una vez más:
—¡Deja ya de perseguirme o me veré obligado a matarte! Y entonces, ¿cómo podría mirar a la cara a tu hermano Joab?
23 Como Asael no dejaba de perseguirlo, Abner le dio un golpe con la punta trasera de su lanza y le atravesó el vientre. La lanza salió por la espalda y ahí mismo Asael cayó muerto.
Todos los que pasaban por ahí se detenían a ver el cuerpo de Asael, 24 pero Joab y Abisay se lanzaron tras Abner. Ya se ponía el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amá, frente a Guiaj, en el camino que lleva al desierto de Gabaón. 25 Entonces los soldados benjamitas se reunieron para apoyar a Abner y, formando un grupo cerrado, tomaron posiciones en lo alto de una colina.
26 Abner gritó a Joab:
—¿Vamos a dejar que siga esta matanza? ¿No te das cuenta de que esto solo traerá amargura? ¿Qué esperas para ordenarles a tus soldados que dejen de perseguir a sus hermanos?
27 Joab respondió:
—Tan cierto como que Dios vive, si no hubieras hablado, mis soldados habrían perseguido a sus hermanos hasta el amanecer.
28 Enseguida Joab hizo tocar la trompeta y todos los soldados, dejando de perseguir a los israelitas, se detuvieron y ya no pelearon más.
29 Toda esa noche Abner y sus hombres atravesaron el Arabá. Después de cruzar el Jordán, siguieron por todo el territorio de Bitrón[b] hasta llegar a Majanayin.
30 Una vez que Joab dejó de perseguir a Abner, regresó y reunió a todo su ejército para contarlo. Además de Asael, faltaban diecinueve de los soldados de David. 31 Sin embargo, los soldados de David habían matado a trescientos sesenta de los soldados benjamitas de Abner. 32 Tomaron luego el cuerpo de Asael y lo sepultaron en Belén, en la tumba de su padre. 2 And David goeth up thither, and also his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite;
3 and his men who [are] with him hath David brought up -- a man and his household -- and they dwell in the cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah come, and anoint there David for king over the house of Judah; and they declare to David, saying, `The men of Jabesh-Gilead [are] they who buried Saul.'
5 And David sendeth messengers unto the men of Jabesh-Gilead, and saith unto them, `Blessed [are] ye of Jehovah, in that ye have done this kindness with your lord, with Saul, that ye bury him.
6 `And, now, Jehovah doth with you kindness and truth, and also, I do with you this good because ye have done this thing;
7 and now, are your hands strong, and be ye for sons of valour, for your lord Saul. [is] dead, and also -- me have the house of Judah anointed for king over them.'
8 And Abner, son of Ner, head of the host which Saul hath, hath taken Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, and causeth him to pass over to Mahanaim,
9 and causeth him to reign over Gilead, and over the Ashurite, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over Israel -- all of it.
10 A son of forty years, [is] Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, in his reigning over Israel, and two years he hath reigned, only the house of Judah have been after David.
11 And the number of the days that David hath been king in Hebron, over the house of Judah, is seven years and six months.
12 And Abner son of Ner goeth out, and servants of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 And Joab son of Zeruiah, and servants of David, have gone out, and they meet by the pool of Gibeon together, and sit down, these by the pool on this [side], and these by the pool on that.
14 And Abner saith unto Joab, `Let the youths rise, I pray thee, and they play before us;' and Joab saith, `Let them rise.'
15 And they rise and pass over, in number twelve of Benjamin, even of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 And they lay hold, each on the head of his companion, and his sword [is] in the side of his companion, and they fall together, and [one] calleth that place Helkath-Hazzurim, which [is] in Gibeon,
17 and the battle is very hard on that day, and Abner is smitten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 And there are there three sons of Zeruiah, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel, and Asahel [is] light on his feet, as one of the roes which [are] in the field,
19 And Asahel pursueth after Abner, and hath not turned aside to go to the right or to the left, from after Abner.
20 And Abner looketh behind him, and saith, `Art thou he -- Asahel?' and he saith, `I [am].'
21 And Abner saith to him, `Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and seize for thee one of the youths, and take to thee his armour;' and Asahel hath not been willing to turn aside from after him.
22 And Abner addeth again, saying unto Asahel, `Turn thee aside from after me, why do I smite thee to the earth? and how do I lift up my face unto Joab thy brother?'
23 And he refuseth to turn aside, and Abner smiteth him with the hinder part of the spear unto the fifth [rib], and the spear cometh out from behind him, and he falleth there, and dieth under it; and it cometh to pass, every one who hath come unto the place where Asahel hath fallen and dieth -- they stand still.
24 And Joab and Abishai pursue after Abner, and the sun hath gone in, and they have come in unto the height of Ammah, which [is] on the front of Giah, the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 And the sons of Benjamin gather themselves together after Abner, and become one troop, and stand on the top of a certain height,
26 and Abner calleth unto Joab, and saith, `For ever doth the sword consume? hast thou not known that it is bitterness in the latter end? and till when dost thou not say to the people to turn back from after their brethren?'
27 And Joab saith, `God liveth! for unless thou hadst spoken, surely then from the morning had the people gone up each from after his brother.'
28 And Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and all the people stand still, and pursue no more after Israel, nor have they added any more to fight.
29 And Abner and his men have gone through the plain all that night, and pass over the Jordan, and go on [through] all Bithron, and come in to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab hath turned back from after Abner, and gathereth all the people, and there are lacking of the servants of David nineteen men, and Asahel;
31 and the servants of David have smitten of Benjamin, even among the men of Abner, three hundred and sixty men -- they died.
32 And they lift up Asahel, and bury him in the burying-place of his father, which [is] in Beth-Lehem, and they go all the night -- Joab and his men -- and it is light to them in Hebron.
