God belooft David een troonopvolger

7 De koning kon nu rustig in zijn paleis wonen, want de Heer had hem aan alle kanten rust gegeven van zijn vijanden. 2 Toen zei de koning tegen de profeet Natan: "Kijk toch eens! Ik woon in een paleis van cederhout, maar de kist van God staat in een tent!" 3 Toen zei Natan tegen de koning: "Doe wat u op uw hart heeft, want de Heer is met u."

4 Maar die nacht zei de Heer tegen Natan: 5 "Ga naar David en zeg tegen hem: Dit zegt de Heer: Wilde jij voor Mij een huis bouwen om in te wonen? 6 Ik heb toch geen huis gehad vanaf de dag dat Ik de Israëlieten uit Egypte meenam, tot nu toe? Ik heb altijd rondgereisd en in een tent gewoond. 7 Heb Ik ooit, terwijl Ik met de Israëlieten rondreisde, tegen één van de leiders van Israël gezegd: 'Waarom bouw je geen huis van cederhout voor Mij?' 8 Dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers: Ik heb je bij je schapen vandaan gehaald om je koning te maken van mijn volk Israël. 9 Ik ben met je geweest bij alles wat je deed. Ik heb al je vijanden voor je gedood. Ik heb jou net zo beroemd gemaakt als de andere machtige koningen van de aarde. 10 Ik heb mijn volk Israël een eigen gebied gegeven om te wonen. Daar heb Ik mijn volk geplant en een vaste plaats gegeven, net zoals je een boom plant en een vaste plaats geeft. Daar zal mijn volk rustig kunnen wonen. Het zal niet meer worden opgejaagd of onderdrukt door wrede volken, 11 zoals vroeger gebeurde in de tijd dat Ik steeds leiders over mijn volk Israël aanwees.[a] Ik heb je rust gegeven door al je vijanden te verslaan. Nu zal Ik voor jou een huis bouwen.[b] 12 Als jouw tijd voorbij is en je gestorven bent, zal Ik jouw eigen zoon koning maken. En Ik zal met hem zijn. 13 En híj zal voor Mij een huis bouwen. En Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat altijd één van zijn zonen koning zal zijn. 14 Ik zal zijn Vader zijn en hij zal mijn zoon zijn. Als hij slechte dingen doet, zal Ik andere mensen gebruiken om hem ook als een vader te bestraffen. 15 Maar Ik zal hem nooit verlaten, zoals Ik Saul heb verlaten. Saul heb Ik vervangen door jou. 16 Jouw familie en jouw koningschap zullen altijd blijven bestaan. Altijd zal één van jouw zonen koning zijn." 17 En Natan zei dit tegen David, precies zoals hij het van God had gehoord.

Davids gebed

18 Toen ging koning David de tent binnen. Hij knielde neer voor de Heer en zei: "Heer, U heeft zóveel voor mij gedaan! Mijn familie en ik hebben dat helemaal niet verdiend! 19 En U vond dit nog niet eens genoeg, Heer. Daarom heeft U tegen mij ook gesproken over de verre toekomst. En wat U zegt, gebeurt. 20 Wat kan ik nog tegen U zeggen? U kent mij, Heer. 21 U heeft mij al deze grote dingen beloofd omdat U graag goed voor mij wil zijn. En U houdt U altijd aan uw woord. 22 U bent geweldig, Heer! Uit alles wat we zelf hebben gehoord weten we zeker: niemand is als U. Er is geen andere God dan U. 23 En geen ander volk is te vergelijken met uw volk Israël. Het is het enige volk op aarde dat door zijn God is bevrijd omdat Hij het tot zijn eigen volk wilde maken. U deed dat om bekend te maken wie U bent, en om grote en indrukwekkende dingen te doen voor uw land, uw volk. U heeft hen bevrijd uit Egypte. U heeft hen gered van andere volken en hun goden. 24 Voor eeuwig is Israël uw volk en voor eeuwig bent U, Heer, hun God.

25 Nu bid ik U, Heer God, wilt U alstublieft werkelijkheid maken wat U tegen mij heeft gezegd over mijn familie. Wilt U alstublieft doen wat U heeft beloofd. 26 Dan zullen de mensen altijd ontzag voor U hebben. Ze zullen zeggen: 'De Heer van de hemelse legers is de God van Israël.' Dan zal mijn familie voor altijd blijven bestaan. 27 Want U, Heer van de hemelse legers, God van Israël, heeft tegen mij gezegd: 'Ik zal jouw huis bouwen.' Daarom durf ik dit gebed tot U te bidden. 28 Heer, U bent God en U doet altijd wat U heeft gezegd. U heeft mij deze prachtige dingen beloofd. 29 Wilt U nu alstublieft goed zijn voor mijn familie, zodat mijn familie voor altijd zal blijven bestaan. Want dat heeft U beloofd, Heer. En als U goed voor ons bent, zal het voor altijd goed gaan met mijn familie."

David Wants to Build a Temple

7 King David was living in his palace, and the Lord had given him peace from all his enemies around him. 2 Then David said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a palace made of cedar wood, but the Ark of God is in a tent!”

3 Nathan said to the king, “Go and do what you really want to do, because the Lord is with you.”

4 But that night the Lord spoke his word to Nathan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Will you build a house for me to live in? 6 From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until now I have not lived in a house. I have been moving around all this time with a tent as my home. 7 As I have moved with the Israelites, I have never said to the tribes, whom I commanded to take care of my people Israel, “Why haven’t you built me a house of cedar?”’

8 “You must tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: I took you from the pasture and from tending the sheep and made you leader of my people Israel. 9 I have been with you everywhere you have gone and have defeated your enemies for you. I will make you as famous as any of the great people on the earth. 10 Also I will choose a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them so they can live in their own homes. They will not be bothered anymore. Wicked people will no longer bother them as they have in the past 11 when I chose judges for my people Israel. But I will give you peace from all your enemies. I also tell you that I will make your descendants kings of Israel after you.

12 “‘When you die and join your ancestors, I will make one of your sons the next king, and I will set up his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for me, and I will let his kingdom rule always. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he sins, I will use other people to punish him. They will be my whips. 15 I took away my love from Saul, whom I removed before you, but I will never stop loving your son. 16 But your family and your kingdom will continue always before me. Your throne will last forever.’”

17 Nathan told David everything God had said in this vision.

David Prays to God

18 Then King David went in and sat in front of the Lord. David said, “Lord God, who am I? What is my family? Why did you bring me to this point? 19 But even this is not enough for you, Lord God. You have also made promises about my future family. This is extraordinary, Lord God.

20 “What more can I say to you, Lord God, since you know me, your servant, so well! 21 You have done this great thing because you said you would and because you wanted to, and you have let me know about it. 22 This is why you are great, Lord God! There is no one like you. There is no God except you. We have heard all this ourselves! 23 There is no nation like your people Israel. They are the only people on earth that God chose to be his own. You made your name well known. You did great and wonderful miracles for them. You went ahead of them and forced other nations and their gods out of the land. You freed your people from slavery in Egypt. 24 You made the people of Israel your very own people forever, and, Lord, you are their God.

25 “Now, Lord God, keep the promise forever that you made about my family and me, your servant. Do what you have said. 26 Then you will be honored always, and people will say, ‘The Lord All-Powerful is God over Israel!’ And the family of your servant David will continue before you.

27 “Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, you have said to me, ‘I will make your family great.’ So I, your servant, am brave enough to pray to you. 28 Lord God, you are God, and your words are true. And you have promised these good things to me, your servant. 29 Please, bless my family. Let it continue before you always. Lord God, you have said so. With your blessing let my family always be blessed.”

6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

18 Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

19 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord God?

20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy servant.

21 For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.

22 Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, Lord, art become their God.

25 And now, O Lord God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.

26 And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.

27 For thou, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.

28 And now, O Lord God, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

29 Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

The Lord Establishes a Covenant with David

7 The king settled into his palace,[a] for the Lord gave him relief[b] from all his enemies on all sides.[c] 2 The king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent.” 3 Nathan replied to the king, “You should go[d] and do whatever you have in mind,[e] for the Lord is with you.” 4 That night the Lord’s message came to Nathan, 5 “Go, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has said: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in? 6 I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent.[f] 7 Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say[g] to any of their leaders[h] whom I appointed to care for[i] my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?”’

8 “So now, say this to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd[j] to make you leader of my people Israel. 9 I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated[k] all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth.[l] 10 I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle[m] them there; they will live there and not be disturbed[n] anymore. Violent men[o] will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning 11 and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief[p] from all your enemies. The Lord declares[q] to you that he himself[r] will build a dynastic house[s] for you. 12 When the time comes for you to die,[t] I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you,[u] and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.[v] 14 I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings. 15 But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me[w] permanently; your dynasty[x] will be permanent.’” 17 Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him.[y]

David Offers a Prayer to God

18 King David went in, sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family,[z] that you should have brought me to this point? 19 And you didn’t stop there, O Lord God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant’s family.[aa] Is this your usual way of dealing with men,[ab] O Sovereign Lord? 20 What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition,[ac] O Sovereign Lord! 21 For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose[ad] you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant.[ae] 22 Therefore you are great, O Sovereign Lord, for there is none like you. There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true.[af] 23 Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation[ag] on the earth? Their God[ah] went[ai] to claim[aj] a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land,[ak] before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods.[al] 24 You made Israel your very own people for all time.[am] You, O Lord, became their God. 25 So now, O Lord God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality.[an] Do as you promised,[ao] 26 so you may gain lasting fame,[ap] as people say,[aq] ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is God over Israel!’ The dynasty[ar] of your servant David will be established before you, 27 for you, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, have told[as] your servant, ‘I will build you a dynastic house.’[at] That is why your servant has had the courage[au] to pray this prayer to you. 28 Now, O Sovereign Lord, you are the true God.[av] May your words prove to be true![aw] You have made this good promise to your servant.[ax] 29 Now be willing to bless your servant’s dynasty[ay] so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O Sovereign Lord, have spoken. But the context seems instead to call for a present or past nuance (“he declares” or “he has declared”). The synoptic passage in 1 Chr 17:10 has וָאַגִּד (vaʾaggid, “and I declared”). The construction used in 2 Sam 7:11 highlights this important statement.

The present translation tries to make sense of the MT by understanding the phrase as a question that underscores the uniqueness of God’s dealings with David as described here. The parallel passage in 1 Chr 17:17 reads differently (see the note there).
  29. 2 Samuel 7:20 tn Heb “and you know your servant.” The verb here refers to recognizing another in a special way and giving them special treatment (see 1 Chr 17:18). Some English versions take this to refer to the Lord’s knowledge of David himself: CEV “you know my thoughts”; NLT “know what I am really like.”
